Image shows end papers containing a publications list, and outer case with label. Later edition of the Smyth map of 1800. This map was originally published by David William Smyth in 1800 and went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154 and Winearls listing). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). Catalogue of Wyld's publications on paste down on the end sheets. See Map Collector 55, p32, for this map and the Wyld family firm history. With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections, mounted on linen with green cloth edging. Folds into a green cloth slip case 21.5x12.5 with a paste down label reading "Upper Canada. Jas. Wyld (Successor to Mr. Faden,) Geographer To Her Majesty. Charing Cross, (East,) 4 Doors from Trafalgar Square ...", also with a small label on the spine printed with "Canada." |
