6 sheets; first engraved chart issued by the U.S. Coast Survey. Without color. Hassler's "Magnum Opus" was not completed until a year after his death. This huge chart is the first major production of the survey, begun by Hassler in response to critic's charges that he was not producing usable charts for navigators, and finished by Bache. A smaller single sheet version was issued in 1845.

Vogdes shows this as the first edition. Vogdes says that the survey was completed in April, 1852, and that the interior topography was taken from Eddy's official map of the city. We have a reproduction of an earlier state of the chart which has no soundings and is dated 1852; it says the plan of the city was taken from the map by Cooke and Le Count; there are differences in the piers and the buildings along the piers. We can find no reference for this earlier state. In the Annual Report of the Survey for 1853, another issue of the chart was published (litho) with the addition of more notes regarding tides in the upper left - this same chart was also issued (engraved on thin paper) in the collection of charts published by the survey in 1854. Map is without color.

Rare first edition of the U.S. Coast Survey map of the City of San Francisco and vicinity. Printed without color. Relief shown by contours and spot heights. Includes note and table of reference to public buildings. 1857 edition marked a significant improvement in the USCS's mapping of San Francisco. Prepared by A.F. Rogers, it captured the tremendous growth of the City, locating wharves, streets, buildings, roads, topographical features and places such as the Union Race Course and Pioneer Race Course, west of the City. While first issued and corrected in 1857, neither of the 1857 editions was never published in the regular annual Coast Survey reports until a revised edition, dated 1859, was issued. This chart was first issued in 1857, with another edition issued later in 1857 that differs from the earlier edition and is apparently the same as 1859 edition see our 1030). The first edition does not include soundings, has a shorter "note" in the top right corner, and does not include the "Blosom rock Buoy" which appears below the table. It also does not include the "hydrography by Lieut. R.M. Cuyler". OCLC locates only 3 copies of this 1857 edition at San Francisco National Maritime Museum, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and the British Library.

This is one of the first Coast Survey charts that we have seen that uses contour lines, other than the 1859 City of San Francisco and Its Vicinity (see our copy). Map without color. Published as map #14 in the "Report of the Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, Showing the Progress of the Survey During the Year 1869." The report was finally published in 1872 and was the House of Representatives report from the 41st Congress, 2d Session, Ex. Doc. No. 206.

Not an Annual Report! Unique edition-all engraved. A set of most of the Coast Survey maps published to July 1854, and all are engraved instead of lithographed as were the maps in the annual reports. Each map has the unique inscription at the top reading "Presented under authority of an act of Congress of the United States of June 3d 1844 by direction of the Treasury Department A.D. Bache Superintendent Coast Survey." U.S. Atlases lists another edition (L3666) of 1856. Bound with half leather and marble paper covered boards with title in gilt on spine. The map is overprinted in red to indicate railroads, the state name "West Virginia," and concentric circles centered on Richmond. Circles are at intervals of ten miles. A table of "Distances by Rail Roads" appears below the map title. Printed in colors, this map is probably the first U.S. Government map to show the new State of West Virginia. It is the first issue, published in July, 1863, just after West Virginia became a state on July 1, 1863. A second issue appeared in August, 1863. It was issued in substantially the same form in 1862 (Stephenson 465.45). Two other issues appeared in 1862 taken from this map: Map of Eastern Virginia and Map of Western Virginia. These were all popular maps, and Stephenson quotes the 1862 Coast Survey Annual Report as stating that 5,500 copies of the Map of Eastern Virginia alone were printed. Map is folded into textured brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Map of Virginia. W.S. & A. Martien, Philadelphia" in gilt.
