The non American maps may be partly derived from the Dower/Teesdale General Atlas of 1831 - see P3549 & P772. North America map has states in different colors and has the following differences from the 1843 Atlas copy: San Felipe de Austin (as opposed to San Felipe in the 1843), and Sioux and Wisconsin Dists (not in the 1843 edition). Wheat mistakenly uses a post 1836 issue as an illustration in Trans Miss and calls it 1836. The Mexico map has differences from 1843 issue: Houston appears in 1843 and not in 1836, and San Felipe de Austin in 1836 is San Felipe in 1843. The Michigan map changes substantially between the 1836, the 1842, and the 1843 editions, especially the shoreline. See notes to the (1838) edition which also has a title page dated 1836. Bound in half leather, marbled paper covered boards, with "Tanner's Universal Atlas. 1836." stamped in gilt along the spine. Full color.

The first edition. One of the finest American atlases. Original parts bound together, but without the original paper wraps. Part 1 is P4463 (copy 3); Part 2,3,4,&5 is P4462 (copy 2). The various parts have been colored differently, indicating that they were bound together as an atlas after being issued separately. Many of the maps have been trimmed close by the original binder. Tanner updated the maps frequently over the next decade, and issued several editions or compilations of the atlas with the title pages dated 1823 or 1825, but with some of the maps dated as late as 1833. The collation of our five issues shows that no two copies are alike and that the maps were being constantly updated; however the choice of maps for each edition reveals a somewhat haphazard approach with some of the earliest states of a particular map appearing the one of the later atlas editions. A completely revised edition was issued in 1839, with the title page and most of the maps dated 1839 (see P1382). Atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Tanner's American Atlas" stamped in gilt on a front leather label.

3rd edition, 1833 (early), maps dated variously, title page dated 1825. Like P1376, except only Illinois & Missouri is dated 1833. Florida is later than the 1825 edition, but is dated 1823. Louisiana & Mississippi and Georgia & Alabama are dated 1825. Compared to the 1825 edition, 2 maps are later, 8 maps are the same, and 8 maps are earlier; compared to the 1823 edition, 8 maps are later, 8 maps are the same, and 2 maps are earlier! This leads one to conclude that when Tanner assembled this atlas in 1833 his stock of maps was depleted and he had to use some earlier maps to complete the book. Ohio is earlier than the 1823 edition (no counties in northwest part - the counties were formed after 1820 when the land was purchased from the Indians) and South America is dated 1818 vs 1821 in the 1823 edition (P1376 also has S.A. dated 1818). Three maps (N.A., Virginia, Kentucky & Tenn) fall between the 1823 and 1825 editions. The memoir is identical to the 1825 (except for a slight change in the 5th paragraph on the first page), but the index sheet is unusual - it lists only the American maps 1-17 in two columns and does not list the World, America, Europe, Asia and Africa (which appear in that order before the other maps in the book). Covers are half leather, marbled paper covered boards with "American Atlas" stamped in gold on a leather label.

2nd edition, maps and title page dated 1825, except S.A. 1823. Like P3669, except S.A. dated 1823 and N.A. dated 1825. Fine copy with extra large sheets bound in full tree calf edged in gilt - the most beautiful and elegant binding we have seen of an American Atlas, stamped "Davis, Binder - Philada." The spine is titled "American Atlas" on a red leather label in gilt. Memoir dated 1825, with slight changes from the 1823 memoir. The index sheet is numbered 1-22 in two columns, vs in one column in the 1823 edition and in two columns numbered 1-17 in the 1833 editions. The maps of the World and America have Arctic discoveries not shown in earlier editions, as does the N.A. map which also shows the Russian Alaska boundary of 1824. The state maps have various updates from the earlier issues (mostly adding counties) although three (Maine etc., Penn., N. & S. Carolina) have 1825 dates with no obvious changes from the earlier issues. See our table comparing all five editions map by map. According to Wolter (Mountains & Rivers article) the 1825 S.A. map has a more elaborate mountains and rivers diagram than any earlier issues. This issue of the atlas can be truly called an edition - all the maps have 1825 dates and the geography is current; the 1823 parts issue is also an edition. Later editions were compilations - some maps were updated, others were not or were taken from out of date issues. Full color.

This edition does not collate to any of the Phillips editions. The title page is dated 1823, as is the memoir. Nine of the maps are first issues (the same as the 1823 atlas), seven are intermediate states between the 1823 and 1825 atlas editions, and two are the same as the 1825 edition maps. Of the seven intermediate state maps, four are unique to this issue ("Kentucky, Tennessee and Part of Illinois" - the only issue with "Part of Illinois" added to the title, New York - treaty line is in Lake Ontario but not in Lake Erie, America and World maps both show New Georgian Island discoveries in the Arctic but not "Hearn's Archipelago"). 1824 is our best guess on the date of atlas publication - the Ohio and Illinois map is dated 1825, but probably prospectively; the large number of intermediate state maps places this between the 1823 and 1825 edition. The name of David Paul Brown is stamped on the front cover and his signature is on the title page presenting this copy to Rev. Samuel Clason. Brown (1795-1872) was a prominent and wealthy Philadelphia lawyer, poet and playwright who "lived on a most lavish scale in accord with his father's theory that a prosperous man should spend his income freely to avoid the evils of indolence" (DAB). Certainly the binding of this atlas reflects that attitude - it is in full red morocco, stamped in gold on all edges and "American Atlas. Tanner" on the spine, and probably made by Davis of Philadelphia who produced the most elegant of the Tanner atlas bindings (see our 1825 edition). Maps are hand painted in full color.

The first edition with the earliest states of all the maps. Many believe this to be the finest atlas published in the United States in the 19th century. The text essay (included here) is a wonderful compilation of information on the contemporary maps that Tanner used as sources. Tanner updated the maps frequently over the next two decades, and issued several editions or compilations of the atlas with the title pages dated 1823 or 1825, but with some of the maps dated as late as 1833. The collation of our six issues shows that no two copies are alike and that the maps were being constantly updated; however the choice of maps for each edition reveals a somewhat haphazard approach with some of the earliest states of a particular map appearing the one of the later atlas editions.
