Note
Second edition of the book, first edition of the map. The first edition of the book and map was 1846; Howes lists editions of 1847, 1848, 1849, 1850 - undoubtedly there were others (see our 1856). The map was also issued separately (see our #4954, 4955). On the map, five vignettes and a decorative border are in the best Smith engraved style. 233 pages of text, black cloth patterned boards 14.5x9.5, with "The Illustrated Hand Book For Travelers Through The United States Of America" in gilt and blind stamped. Map colored in outline.

A separate issue of the map usually found in the Illustrated Hand Book (see our 1847, 1849, and 1856 editions). Changes from the 1850 edition are in the inset map of the west - California, Utah, and New Mexico appear in place of one large California in the 1850 map. With a nice paste down double hemisphere advertising book plate of J. Disturnell. Outline color. Folded into green patterned covers 14x9 with "Smith's New Guide For Travelers Through The United States Of America" stamped in gilt and blind stamped.

This is one of J. Calvin Smith's most decorative pocket maps - five lovely vignettes of Niagara Falls, Mount Holyoke, the White Mountains, the Falls of Montmorenci, and several ships at sea surround the main map and two insets which are vividly colored in outline. Railroad routes are prominent, with connecting stage and steamboat routes. Outline color. Folded into stamped green cloth covers 14x10, with "Sherman & Smith's Illustrated Railroad Steamboat & Stage-Route Map Of New England, New York And Canada" in gilt.
