Dissected and folding in four sheets: the western two sheets each dissected into 8 sections, the northeastern section into 12 sections, and the southeastern sheet into 16 sections. Map has a label of J. Wyld (indicating it was sold in England). According to a note on the case cover and on the publisher's notice on the map, this is the first map to show the townships of Indiana. Outline color by state. Sheets fold into blue paper end sheets with a folding cover and patterned brown cloth slip case 31x22 labeled with "United States. Young" and the third 1834 issue with Mitchell's name added to the title. There are many changes between the 1835 edition and the 1836 edition in the west and mid west. Map has full color by county and green silk edging. Dissected into 36 sections. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new blue cloth folding case 30.5x25 with "Reference And Distance Map Of The United States S.A. Mitchell 1835" stamped in gold on the spine.

The border is changed and enlarged slightly from the 1841 edition, and the inset map of North America incorporates information from the John Arrowsmith Map of British North America in the Great Basin. New counties are added in Iowa, which is no longer a territory, and the counties in the northern Michigan penisula are fully develped. The copyright date has been changed to 1845. Insets show the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston. The first edition. In wall map form. It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. Ristow states that there was an issue of this map in 1834 without the word "Mitchell" in the title (see our copy #4843), and he does not mention this word appearing in the title until the 1835 issue. He also notes an 1834 issue of essentially the same map but with the title changed to "A New Map of the United States" (Karrow 1-1484 and our #4396). First edition, here in the form of a case map, in exceptionally fine condition, with the original marbled end sheets and half leather marbled covers 31x24.5 with gold stamped leather label saying "Mitchell's Map Of The United States." It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. This is the first appearance of the map that was issued later in the same year with the title changed to "Reference and Distance Map of the United States by J.H. This is the early 1845 issue with Iowa Territory extending north of the later state borders, Michigan counties undeveloped in the northern peninsula, the copyright date still 1833, and the smaller ornamental borders of the 1841 issue. Later in the year Mitchell changed the map substantially (see our #4223). The John Arrowsmith delineation is used in the Great Basin. Insets include the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston. With black top and bottom rollers, and dark green cloth edging. Full color by county.
