Note
Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black.

Reissue, without his name, of Atwood's 1851 map of similar title (#2365). The table of distances is expanded and the map includes more of South America but less of Canada than the 1851 edition. Both this map and the 1851 map probably come from an earlier edition of the 1854 "North America and Europe..." by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning, engraved by J.M. Atwood (#2878). Wheat Gold 258 is the 1854 edition of this map, published by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. Map has outline color, and is folded into embossed dark green cloth covers 14x9 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada Mexico Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in gold. Prime meridian is Greenwich. Relief shown by hachures.

This is an unusual pairing of two maps normally found separately, here folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Township Map of the Western States" stamped in gilt on the front. The map of New England is the scarcer of the two - it has six vignettes in the decorative border, four of which are views of Montreal, Toronto, New York, and Boston, as well as three inset maps of Boston, New York and the railroad route from Washington to New York. The accompanying map of the mid western states was published with Smith's "Western Tourist or Emigrant's Guide" 1853 and separately (see our #2962 and #190). Both maps in full color by county. Prime meridian is Washington D.C.
