6 sheets, first engraved chart issued by the U.S. Coast Survey. Without color. Hassler's "Magnum Opus" was not completed until a year after his death. This huge chart is the first major production of the survey, begun by Hassler in response to critic's charges that he was not producing usable charts for navigators, and finished by Bache. A smaller single sheet version was issued in 1845. |

Smaller version of first copper plate chart of Survey. The first lithographed chart was published in 1839, of New York Bay. This is a reduction of the large six sheet Chart of New York Bay, edition of 1844, the first copper plate chart. Map is edged in green silk, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Full color. Folds up with marbled end sheets with a label printed with the above title in ms, and below that, a label printed with "... Durate. S. Alofsen." Map lies in a new tan cloth folding case 23x20 with "New York Bay & Harbor U.S. Coast Survey 1845" stamped on the spine in gold. |
