Outline color by state, folded into dark gray modern cloth covers 15x10 with "Colton's Map Of The United States And The Canadas" in gilt. Issued separately in pocket map form, linen backed (High Ridge #108 in Cat 18), and in the Traveler's and Tourist's Guide Book (and Route Book) Through the United States of America and the Canadas. First edition was 1850 (Howes C623) by Colton; Howes says the guide is descended from J. Calvin Smith's Guide of 1846; the map is slightly larger scale than the Smith and larger in size, and it is clearly related. Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. Carolina. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

Johnson & Browning are listed as publisher on the cover and on the map - it is unusual to see Johnson & Browning on the cover of a Colton Pocket map - it probably only occurred in 1859 and 1860 when Johnson and Browning were briefly listed as publisher of Colton's General Atlas. The map appears identical to the 1860 General Atlas map. See our #4096, 4506, and 4510 for other Johnson & Browning/Colton pocket maps. Full color by county. Note
Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484). Full color by state. Folded into brown cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico, Central America, West Indies, &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt.

Note
Two maps in one folder, as issued; brown cloth covers 13.5x8.5 stamped with grape-design has "Burr's Map Of The State Of Ohio Published By J.H. Colton & Co. New York" printed in gilt. The full color Burr Ohio map is engraved and printed by S.Stiles & Co. The uncolored Portsmouth map is lithographed by P. Desobry's, N.Y.C. The first edition of the Ohio map was issued in 1833. Inset of Cincinnati. One of Colton's early maps and one of several he published with Burr. The map of Portsmouth appears in no records but seems similar to several maps issued in 1833 to show the opening of the Ohio & Erie Canal. There is a view on the map of "Proposed Front of One Block" which shows buildings to be erected, so this may be a promotional real estate map, as well.

Large and detailed map in two sheets of the Confederacy, taken from the southern portion of the J. Calvin Smith Map of the Untied States and the Canadas, first issued in 1843, here updated to 1864. The copyright date is 1863, but Colton issued the map in 1861 and 1862; Stephenson shows the 1862 edition by Bacon of London (who issued many of Colton's Civil War maps). An inset map of the United States shows the proposed railroad routes to the Pacific Ocean. Tables list information from the U.S. Census of 1860. Map is in full color by county, and folded into beautifully stamped brown cloth covers 21x13 with clover leaf design and title "Colton's Map Of The Southern States, Showing The Counties & Railroads, Cities, Towns, Railroad Stations, &c. Although entered in 1854, the earliest copy found was the Eberstadt copy, dated 1859. This was the official state map of Arkansas with the usual signed testaments by officials verifying the map's accuracy, as well as having the state seal printed above the title. The testaments are dated 1845, which may imply much earlier issues, although we can find no record of any earlier than 1859. Note
This edition has the same cover as the "Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide..." but the title page is different, and the contents are basically the same - Colton issued the two books with different title pages but the same contents and maps - an interesting marketing device. The map adds Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas to the title and is enlarged and extended west to include the settled eastern counties of Nebraska and Kansas and a portion of Dakota. Fisher's name is added to the title page for the first time, as compiler, something he probably was doing since the Colton editions of the early 1850's. The text is expanded to include Nebraska and Kansas. With map in full color, 49x71, entitled, "Guide Through Ohio, Michigan Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska & Kansas, Showing The Township lines of the United States Surveys ... The copyright date is 1848 and probably the first edition was issued then or in 1849. It is not listed in any of the standard references. Colton did not list it in his catalog, listing instead the D.F. Shall "Railroad & Township Map of Arkansas" (see our #4506). This is an unusual pairing of two maps normally found separately, here folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Township Map of the Western States" stamped in gilt on the front. The map of New England is the scarcer of the two - it has six vignettes in the decorative border, four of which are views of Montreal, Toronto, New York, and Boston, as well as three inset maps of Boston, New York and the railroad route from Washington to New York. The accompanying map of the mid western states was published with Smith's "Western Tourist or Emigrant's Guide" 1853 and separately (see our #2962 and #190). Both maps in full color by county. This is taken from Colton's large wall map titled "Colton's Map of the United States of America Including Canada and a Large Portion of Texas" (see our #4500). It is a very decorative map - there is an elaborate floral border and city views of St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Louisville, plus two vignettes of a buffalo and a deer in the upper corners.
