Note
This edition has the same cover as the "Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide..." but the title page is different, and the contents are basically the same - Colton issued the two books with different title pages but the same contents and maps - an interesting marketing device. The map adds Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas to the title and is enlarged and extended west to include the settled eastern counties of Nebraska and Kansas and a portion of Dakota. Fisher's name is added to the title page for the first time, as compiler, something he probably was doing since the Colton editions of the early 1850's. The text is expanded to include Nebraska and Kansas. With map in full color, 49x71, entitled, "Guide Through Ohio, Michigan Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska & Kansas, Showing The Township lines of the United States Surveys ... By J. Calvin Smith ... 1857." Bound with brown cloth with title embossed on cover.

This edition is not listed by Karrow, who shows editions of 1853, 1854 (see our #4985) and 1856. In order to show more of the new Kansas and Nebraska Territories, this edition widens the map and slides it west, eliminating western New York and Pennsylvania; the title is shifted from the lower right to the upper left. Many new counties are shown in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Many new completed and proposed railroads are added. Full color by county, folded into stamped red leather covers 16x10.5 with "Map Of The Western States J.H. Colton" in gilt.
