Note
This was the first General Atlas published in the United States. It has the same maps as Carey's Guthrie Atlas, and adds a large map of the United States by Samuel Lewis, which is an imposing and important map, lacking in most copies. The Lewis map of the United States appears here for the first time. Even though the contents page of Carey's Guthrie Atlas calls for a map of the United States, it is not found in any copies that we know of. Karpinski (CXIV) incorrectly says this map appeared in the American Atlas of 1795. These maps are not folded horizontally, as are the 1795 Guthrie maps, and the Map of France has a 1798 engraving credit that does not appear on the Guthrie 1795 issue. This copy also contains a map not belonging to this atlas, glued inside the back cover, entitled "Chart of the Atlantic Ocean" published by Edmund M. Blunt, Newburyport in 1802. Atlas is bound in quarter leather, brown and black patterned paper covered boards.

Note
Accompanies Carey's 2 vol Guthrie, 1794-95 (see our 2647). Although the title page calls for it, the large United States map is not present here, nor in any editions we know of (Baskes, LOC, Yale), therefore we conclude that it was not ready until late 1795 and was first included in the 1796 General Atlas (see our copy). The title page of this atlas differs considerably from the 1796 General Atlas title page (which has no mention of Guthrie, nor written explanation of the "small hand pointer," both of which appear here. The maps are in the same order as the 1796 edition, with the Tennessee map the same as the American Atlas Tennessee (Tennessee Government vs Tennessee State in the 1796 edition). The maps all appear to have been folded originally (same as Baskes copy), which probably means they were folded first to be in the text volumes (one way they appeared), but when some buyers wanted the separate atlas, they were unfolded and bound on edge. The overall size of this volume is shorter than the 1796 edition. The owner has written on the title page "Price, with the 2 vols of Guthrie's Geography. 16 Dols = 6 (pounds)." Covers are quarter leather, marbled paper covered boards.

Note
The first atlas made in the United States to employ standard color on the maps; while the Carey 1795 American Atlas and the Carey 1811 General Atlas list color as an option on the title page, we have never seen any copies of a pre 1814 Carey atlas with original color - they may exist, but would be rare - color was first employed as standard in this 1814 edition - all copies that we have seen have been colored. This edition is almost entirely new, with most of the maps reengraved. The 1804 edition before this was essentially the same as the 1795 first edition. The preface is dated March 17th, 1814. This edition should probably be called the second edition even though Carey does not label it as such, because Carey calls the 1818 edition the third edition. The Map of the United States is an updated copy of the U.S. map engraved by Henry Tanner that appeared in the first edition of Melish's Travels In the United States, published in 1812. This issue is late 1814. See our early 1814 for differences. Bound in quarter leather, brown paper covered boards.

Note
This edition not in Phillips. This is the last edition of Carey's General Atlas that uses the maps from the 1795 American Atlas and 1795 General Atlas For Guthrie's Geography essentially unchanged, except for imprint date on some of them. Carey produced editions of the General atlas in 1800 (Yale), 1802 and 1804; those editions have maps with the same imprint dates (1794 and 1795) as the first editions, and add four maps: the Plat of the Seven Ranges, Map of Part of the N:W: Territory, St. Domingue, and Countries in which the Apostles traveled. In 1809 Carey reissued the American Atlas with the same set of American maps as the 1802 and 1804 General Atlas, and added a small map of Louisiana from Carey's Pocket Atlas of 1805. Several of the maps (British Possessions, United States, New York, and Virginia) bear 1809 imprints, although it is not obvious that any changes to the geography were made on any of the maps. This group of American maps from the 1809 American Atlas, along with the non American maps from the 1804 General Atlas, make up the 1811 General Atlas. The maps are bound on edge, large folio style, with the title pasted to the inside front cover (the Yale copy is the same). The Plat of the Seven Ranges is the scarce second issue (Wheat/Brun 677, with Carey's Imprint and Barker as engraver) and the large Map of Part of the N:W: Territory (Wheat/Brun 678) is the first (1796) and only issue. The Louisiana map is unusual in having extremely large blank borders. This 1811 General Atlas appears to be the scarcest of the pre 1814 editions of the General Atlas. In 1814 Carey did a major revision of the maps for "Carey's General Atlas, Improved and Enlarged" by making 32 "all new" maps and having the other 26 maps "retouched, and, where necessary, corrected." This atlas is bound in half leather, marbled paper covered boards.

Note
Notwithstanding the title, the index calls for 52 maps and only 52 are included. An earlier edition was published in 1814 (Yale) by Carey with Johnson and Warner, with the same title page as this 1816 edition and with 58 maps (according to Yale's catalog - not seen by us). An 1818 edition was published with 52 maps in the title and index. Yale's copy of the 1816 edition lists 52 maps in the title and index. So this title may be an uncorrected state. The maps in this atlas result from a collaboration between Carey and Warner, using maps from their prior publications, unchanged: maps 1-4, 30-49, and 52 are from the 1809 edition of Guthrie's Geographical Grammar, Philadelphia, by Johnson and Warner (our 0316.000); maps 5-8 are from the 1812 (late) edition of Brooke's Gazetteer, Philadelphia, Johnson and Warner (our 3807.000); maps 9-29 are from the 1814 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, Philadelphia, Mathew Carey (our 2276.000); maps 50 and 51 (Turkey in Asia and Islands of the East Indies) are from an unknown American source and are copies of Wilkinson maps. Carey's maps are of separate states of the United States while Warner's maps cover the general American maps (including 5-8, which are relatively scarce general maps of Eastern States, Middle and Western States, Southern States, and North Western Territories) and maps of the rest of the World. In 1802 and 1810 Carey published Carey's Minor American Atlas (P11022, 11023) which was about the same size as this atlas, with only 19 and 20, respectively, American maps - essentially the American Pocket Atlas with maps bound unfolded and without text. He took this format and enlarged it to a world atlas by using Warner's maps. This was probably published in a small edition and was an attempt to serve the market with a cheaper and smaller version of the folio General Atlas. This atlas is not listed in any of the references; we am aware of only four copies (Baskes, Yale (2), and this one) although there may
