Note
1st edition of guide. Includes two maps. In the introduction of the 26 page guide book, Boardman states that the large White Mountain map was issued "previously" which one assumes was the prior year, since Phillips lists 1858 as the first edition of the map. Some 1858 (see our #5228) and later issues of the map look the same and bear the same date of 1858, but are lithographic transfers done by J.H. Bufford who also did the first edition of the Railroad map (see our 1864 edition of the large map). The quality of the later lithographic issues is not up to the quality of the first engraved or lithographed issues. Phillips lists an 1871 revised edition by H.S. Fifield and lithographed by Bufford. Boardman also states that he drew the map from his own surveys of the area. Several vignettes of local buildings and scenes surround the mountain ranges. Both maps are in black and white, and folded into stamped red cloth covers with "Boardman's White Mountain Guide" in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.
