Large and important map of India in six sheets, joined and dissected onto three sheets. It shows British controlled areas at the turn of the century. Arrowsmith published an even larger version of the map in 1816: "With the growing influence of the British in India at the end of the eighteenth century, the need for an up-to-date general map of the sub-continent grew. The first Governor-General, Warren Hastings, employed Major Rennell who, in 1779, published his famous Bengal Atlas, followed up in 1788 by his map of India. The map itself was based upon D'Anville's map of 1752, though enriched by much new material, supplied by the numerous "route surveys" carried out by the army. As these "route surveys" began to become more numerous and accurate the need for a new general map of India soon became apparent. In 1816 Aaron Arrowsmith published his Map of India in nine sheets, on a scale of sixteen miles to an inch, which was the last great general map based on route surveys. His subsequent Atlas of South India, published in 1822, was based upon the trigonometrical surveys of Colonel Lambton, filled in by the officers of the Madras Institute." |

All four sheets joined as one. Four sheets, dissected and mounted on linen. The title cartouche is a view of the Iron Bridge over the Severn River at Coalbrookdale, which opened in 1781, the world's first arch bridge made out of cast iron. The map is dedicated to the famous English naturalist Joseph Banks (with his oval portrait, not shown on later states of the map) who was the botanist on Cook's first circumnavigation, and was involved with the Vancouver voyages and William Bligh's breadfruit mission. This map shows Arrowsmith's dense cartographic style used in areas where the landscape was known (Europe) as contrasted to his sparse style where much of the landscape was unknown (Americas, Africa). |

One of the first maps of Africa to show the true state of geographical knowledge of the continent, hence the vast areas of the map with no information - this was Arrowsmith's style when he mapped Africa, the America's and other parts of the world where geographic information was both unknown and evolving. From Mapforum #5 "...one of the greatest maps ever published. Arrowsmith simply stripped away centuries of accumulated myth, misconception and unsustainable guesswork, and took the mapping of Africa back to the bare bones of substantiated fact, leaving the interior as a blank canvas, a challenge to a new generation of explorers. As a picture, many of his predecessors of a century earlier would not have thought of publishing it, as a statement of intent it raised the standard for geographical accuracy above that practised by the vast majority of his contemporaries" |

A large and superbly detailed antique map of Asia, marking the routes of the explorers. It is a significant advance on other maps of the period, incorporating the work of surveyors like James Rennell, to whom the map was dedicated. Rennell was surveyor-general of the East India Company's dominions in Bengal and the information published in his 'Bengal Atlas' in 1779 appears here. Arrowsmith has also included topographical detail like mountain ranges in remarkable detail in regions as remote as Tibet. |

This issue incorporates the Lewis and Clark discoveries (and other discoveries) and remaps the entire continent west of the Mississippi. The changes between this and the last edition (1811) are monumental. This copy is from the collection of Sir Charles Broke (or Brooke, subsequently Vere). Broke was in Lower Canada with his regiment, the 5th (Northumberland) Regiment of Foot, which was at the battle of Plattsburg in 1814. Later, he was with the Army of Occupation in France, receiving the Waterloo medal despite arriving from Canada too late for the battle (from Manasek). Without color. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into a new gray cloth covered box case 29x22x7 with "North America A. Arrowsmith 1814" stamped on the spine in gold. |

Comparing to 79(d), 1804, I cannot find the changes indicated by Stevens, and comparing to 79(f), which only has added "-1815" in ms, I cannot find any changes either. It could be that this copy of 79(e) is later than the one Stevens saw as indicated by the 1811 watermark. There may be a 79(e) without the 1811 watermakr that is earlier. Outline color by state. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 18 sections. Sheets fold, each with a label pasted to the linen backing reading "Sold by W. 5th ed."Hydrographer to His Majesty." Dated 1810. Four separate sheets dissected into 16 sheets each, with light blue silk edging and linen backing. Streeter is incorrect in calling this the first edition, it is actually the last. The Adams - Onis Treaty line of 1819 is clearly marked, Arrowsmith styled himself "Hydrographer to His Majesty" in 1820 (Tooley), this edition has a road from Queretaro to Panco Valles which does not appear in W.H.'s additions to 1815 edition, as well as other roads and new towns around Mexico City and two small groups of islands off the California Coast that do not appear on the 1810 edition, this edition appears in the Atlas to Thompson's Alcedo, c.1825 copy, in the Bancroft. The mystery is why Arrowsmith did not add "additions to 1820" on the title, and in fact erased the "additions to 1817" that must have appeared on the plate from the most recent changes made before the 1820 changes, thereby leaving only 1810 on the title. With outline color. The sheets fold with marbled end sheets into a new tan cloth folding case 26x18 with "Mexico A. Arrowsmith 1820" stamped on the spine in gold. |

1st edition, 1st issue - "Tennassee Government." Many changes from the later 1808/1811 issue - the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi are drawn very preliminarily and inaccurately, very few roads are shown throughout, there is a long note in the lower left corner about the boundaries of Georgia, parts of Maine and Canada are blank or inaccurately drawn, and Georgia and Tennessee have much less detail. Only the title sheet that shows the Carolinas and Virginia is about the same, except for fewer roads. As geographical knowledge increased about the parts north and west, Arrowsmith filled in this map. Outline color by state. In two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and backed with linen. Lacking the two eastern sheets which include the title. This issue is earlier slightly than our complete 1819 edition (Stevens 79 (i)) with less development shown in the area around the junction of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers, which were settling up rapidly at that time (see David Thomas "Travels Through The Western Country"). However, it has the northern and (most of) the southern flaps which place it later than Stevens 79 (h). So it is probably an unrecorded state of the map. This map is likely a reduction of the base drawings from Arrowsmith's larger Map of England at a scale of 1 inch to 3 miles, first published in 1815. An interesting feature of this map is the inclusion of road distances from eight different points in London to all major cities and towns in England and Wales. Arrowsmith includes numbers in the various counties which are not explained in the map legend. Additions and corrections were made almost every year from the maps first issue in 1813 to this edition of 1820. Arrowsmith did similar scale maps of Scotland, 1807 (see our 6702.000) and Ireland, 1811 (see our 6708.000). Full color, dissected and mounted on linen. |

John Macdonald Kinneir was a British explorer who traveled widely in Asia Minor and Persia. Arrowsmith issued this map of Asia Minor which shows the various marches of Alexander, Xenophon, Julian and Heraclius. The map was likely produced to accompany Kinneir's book "Journey Through Asia Minor, Armenia, and Koordistan in the Years 1813 and ..." (1818). The book is available here http://archive.org/stream/journeythrougha00kinngoog Kinneir and Arrowsmith also issued a large map of the Middle East titled "Map of the Countries lying between the Euphrates and Indus on the East and West, and the Oxus and Terek and Indian Ocean on the North and South" (see our 6914.000). The folded cover bears the signature of "Major Wyndham 67th Foot 1822" - likely the same Colonel Charles Wyndham who entered the army as Cornet in the 10th Light Dragoons, 1811. On the 20th December 1821 he was promoted to Major in the 67th Regiment of Foot. He served under Lord Wellington between 1812 and 1813 during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. Apparently Wyndham traveled to India as part of his duties and this map was used in his journeys. |

This is the first issue of this map, a second edition was published in 1816 (see our 6706.000), which was updated to show the new boundaries resulting from the Treaty of Paris of November 1815. This 1812 edition has the pre treaty boundaries, which are most evident along the boundary of Germany and France. "Arrowsmith was soon recognized in Britain and abroad as a cartographer of outstanding accuracy and skill and was accorded the title of hydrographer to the prince regent about 1810 and that of hydrographer to the king in 1820. His maps were in great demand by official bodies such as the Admiralty and, more surprisingly given their great size and hence cost, with the public as well. In 1807 he published his map of Scotland, based on the military survey of Scotland of 1745-55 and of particular interest for the accompanying Memoir (1809) in which he described how he constructed the map. His last major work was his map of India (1822). He engraved and printed many of his own maps and all of those produced in his shop (at 10 Soho Square from 1814) were noted for the functional beauty and simplicity with which they were engraved" (Elizabeth Baigent for DNB). Two flaps extend the map to northern Italy. |
