(Covers to) Sketch of the Outline and principal Rivers of India by A. Arrowsmith Hydrographer to His Majesty 1822. Note: This map is intended to shew how many sheets of this size would be required for a Map of India on a scale of Four English Miles to one Inch, any one of which may be engraved independent of another when materials offer, and may be united to the rest by keeping correctly to the lines as drawn on this Map. The sheets as far as No. 16 are already engraved on the above scale.

Note
This map projects a huge project of mapping India on a large scale (4 miles to 1 inch) with 102 sheets. The project was never completed because Arrowsmith died in 1823. 16 sheets were finished (as stated in the title of this map) and they became Arrowsmith's last map, the Atlas of South India, issued in 1822.

(Covers to) Map of Asia Minor Armenia and Koordistan Illustrative of the Marches of Alexander, Xenophon, Julian and Heraclius. By J. Macdonald Kinneir. Madras, May 1, 1816. London, Published 3rd Decr. 1817, by A. Arrowsmith, No 10 Soho Square, Hydrographer to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales.

Note
John Macdonald Kinneir was a British explorer who traveled widely in Asia Minor and Persia. Arrowsmith issued this map of Asia Minor which shows the various marches of Alexander, Xenophon, Julian and Heraclius. The map was likely produced to accompany Kinneir's book "Journey Through Asia Minor, Armenia, and Koordistan in the Years 1813 and ..." (1818). The book is available here http://archive.org/stream/journeythrougha00kinngoog Kinneir and Arrowsmith also issued a large map of the Middle East titled "Map of the Countries lying between the Euphrates and Indus on the East and West, and the Oxus and Terek and Indian Ocean on the North and South" (see our 6914.000). The folded cover bears the signature of "Major Wyndham 67th Foot 1822" - likely the same Colonel Charles Wyndham who entered the army as Cornet in the 10th Light Dragoons, 1811. On the 20th December 1821 he was promoted to Major in the 67th Regiment of Foot. He served under Lord Wellington between 1812 and 1813 during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. Apparently Wyndham traveled to India as part of his duties and this map was used in his journeys.

This is only the Southeastern quarter of Arrowsmith's later, slightly enlarged map of Asia issued in 1818. His earlier edition of Asia, issued in 1801 at a scale of 6,490,880 (see our 6907.000), was smaller and somewhat less detailed. Note
This is the first issue of this map; a second edition was published in 1816 (see our 6706.000), which was updated to show the new boundaries resulting from the Treaty of Paris of November 1815. This 1812 edition has the pre treaty boundaries, which are most evident along the boundary of Germany and France. "Arrowsmith was soon recognized in Britain and abroad as a cartographer of outstanding accuracy and skill and was accorded the title of hydrographer to the prince regent about 1810 and that of hydrographer to the king in 1820. His maps were in great demand by official bodies such as the Admiralty and, more surprisingly given their great size and hence cost, with the public as well. In 1807 he published his map of Scotland, based on the military survey of Scotland of 1745-55 and of particular interest for the accompanying Memoir (1809) in which he described how he constructed the map. His last major work was his map of India (1822). He engraved and printed many of his own maps and all of those produced in his shop (at 10 Soho Square from 1814) were noted for the functional beauty and simplicity with which they were engraved" (Elizabeth Baigent for DNB). Two flaps extend the map to northern Italy.

Large and important map of India in six sheets, joined and dissected onto three sheets. It shows British controlled areas at the turn of the century. Arrowsmith published an even larger version of the map in 1816: "With the growing influence of the British in India at the end of the eighteenth century, the need for an up-to-date general map of the sub-continent grew. The first Governor-General, Warren Hastings, employed Major Rennell who, in 1779, published his famous Bengal Atlas, followed up in 1788 by his map of India. The map itself was based upon D'Anville's map of 1752, though enriched by much new material, supplied by the numerous "route surveys" carried out by the army. As these "route surveys" began to become more numerous and accurate the need for a new general map of India soon became apparent. In 1816 Aaron Arrowsmith published his Map of India in nine sheets, on a scale of sixteen miles to an inch, which was the last great general map based on route surveys. His subsequent Atlas of South India, published in 1822, was based upon the trigonometrical surveys of Colonel Lambton, filled in by the officers of the Madras Institute."
