Unusual index map that shows the rough shape and projection for each of the original 50 maps of the atlas. Stieler was one of the first to use this technique for a visual index instead of listing the maps in text only. Zero or first edition of Stieler Atlas published 1817-1833 in three versions. 1817-23 (version 0.a), 1823-31 (version 0.b), 1831-33 (version 0.c). Publication went through ten editions from 1816 to 1944. This version published in 2 parts then augmented with two further supplementary installments, through 1833. Most maps have the year of first edition. This edition compromises 90 sheets, dated 1816-1835, including composite index map, and extraordinarily detailed maps and supplements. Maps are copper-plate engravings, hand colored in outline, mounted on cloth backing. Bound in marble papered, half leather covers with no title on cover. Inset map on title page: Gotha und Umgebung 1823, gest. v. Edler. Gez. v. Bar. |

Third edition. A colorful rendering of comparative mountain heights worldwide, although separated into the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. Other aspects of the illustration (with the exception of showing volcanoes) appear to be fanciful. Substantially more taller mountains than an earlier edition (see our although dates uncertain because the date of 1816 is the same. The peaks are listed, each with a unique number which can be matched up with the numbers at the top and bottom of the illustration. By making a line between the numbers, the corresponding peak is intersected. Latitudes, sources, and altitudes also listed. |

Wood block print. Hand colored. In Japanese. Shows the world based on Buddhist literature from India and China. This map is based on a Buddhist conceptual view of the world with India at the center, yet it includes contemporary European geographical knowledge -- Europe is shown as a group of islands in the upper left corner and South America is is an island in the ocean south of Japan on the right side. The map has many place names in Asia not found on European maps of the period. In the center of the map in the Himalayan Mountains is a quadruple helix symbolizing the origins of the four great rivers of the region (the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Sutlej rivers) emanating from the heads of a horse, a lion, an elephant, and an ox. This is the site of the present day Lake Manasarovar, the highest fresh water lake in the world. "A land bridge connects China to an unnamed continent in the upper right corner ..."--Cortazzi. Relief shown pictorially. Bibliography. Title in Nihon kohan chizu shusei: Nanzenbushu bankoku shoka no zu. Folded in cover 24x19. Has annotations in red ink. |

Shows the comparative heights of mountains in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, as well as the comparative heights of important places. A list of Authorities is given to the left of the title, and an Explanation shows how the system of numbering mountains and places works. A former owner has added "6225....White Mountains, N.H." to the table. This chart may be one of the earliest of its genre, it is not listed in Wolter's "Heights of Mountains..." (he lists the Thomson 1817 similar chart as the first of this type). The British Museum lists this Smith as the first chart of this kind. Interestingly, Smith's chart does not show the Himalayan Mountains, Thomson adds the Himalayan Mountains to his chart with a note about the recent publication of data on their heights. With black top and bottom sticks, and green silk edging. Full hand painted color. |

The date of the globes is an estimate. Paired with a three inch celestial globe. On a turned wooden stand with four black ball feet, full height from base to top, 5 inches. Warner says that Wilson changed the business name from Wilson & Co. to Wilson & Sons in 1822. The celestial globe this is paired with is by Wilson & Sons, so I assume 1822 as the only year globes were made with both business names. The globe is very well engraved, showing much detail in the continents for its small size. Longitude is given from both Washington and London. Kimball notes that David Wilson, James' son, did the engraving for a new edition of the three inch globes in the early 1820's, which I assume are these globes. David later had brief success as a miniature painter, utilizing the same delicate engraving skills which he applied to these extremely well engraved globes. The three inch globe was also sold in pocket form with the celestial sphere on the inside of the case and on a stand with horizon ring and brass meridian. On this turned wooden stand version, the globe is mounted horizontally, an unusual presentation. Wilson made the first globes in the United States, with 1810 his first year of production and 1850 (by Cyrus Lancaster) his last. |

Townsend's second collapsible globe with an internal mechanism for holding it open. The first collapsible Townsend globe was held open by an external stand - apparently no examples exist. Townsend was a school teacher in Vermont and later in California. His interest in globes was to produce a cheap globe that could be owned and used by students instead of a flat "map which, without explanation, is a false illustration, and can be understood only by a process of reasoning entirely beyond the mind of the child" (from Townsend's "Folding Globe Lessons"). This copy is presumed to be the second issue of this globe - an earlier issue has a somewhat different folder with only Townsend listed as publisher. However, it is not certain that both examples were not produced simultaneously in different cities. Both Globes are dated the same. Originally from the Welsh Collection. With a photocopy of Townsend's Folding-Globe Lessons, and an original advertising flyer for the globe. |

The second year of production of Wilson's Thirteen Inch Globe by Cyrus Lancaster. Compared to the last Wilson issue of 1834 (see our #4310) we cannot detect any changes in the geography. In fact, both the 1834 and the 1836 are out of date regarding the United States - Arkansas is shown in enlarged pre 1824 form and Northwestern Territory is shown where Michigan Territory should be. But then most of the early American globes did not keep current with the changes to political geography. With a four leg table stand. Total height from base to top is 18 inches. |

There are seven new maps not in earlier editions (mostly of South America), and an equal number of the more obscure European maps have been dropped, the remaining maps have not been updated from the 1804 first edition. The oceans are not delineated with dark lines as in the 1804 and 1805 editions. Starting with the 1805 edition, Morse acquired this atlas (originally published in 1804 to accompany the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Geography) for his Geography. 3rd edition. 1837 (state 4 Verner) of the British North America map. Most of the maps are dated 1832 and 1834. The maps of Brit. N.A., Upper and Lower Canada, are dated 1837, America is 1835, all others are earlier. This atlas is remarkable for its understated elegance and clarity. It is one of the first truly "modern" atlases of the nineteenth century. All maps have outline color except for the full color geological map of England and Wales. Covers are dark blue half blue leather cloth covered boards with "Arrowsmith's London Atlas. Incorporated Law Society 1832" embossed on the spine in gilt. |
