Colored rare bird’s-eye view of the theatre of conflict at the opening of the American Civil War. The view extends from Chesapeake Bay in the foreground to encompass the Appalachians and the watersheds of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Shows topographical features, cities and towns, roads and railroads, and areas of elevation and waterways, in an unusual oblique view that captures a larger amount of landscape than appears in other Civil War views such as the Bachmanns (see our copies).. Relief shown by shadings. Tables in the left and right margins show distances by rail between Washington, D.C.; Cairo, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri and other parts of the country. The map tracks the Mississippi as far south as Memphis. The whole is centered on Louisville Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley.

Note
See notes to other issues of this map. This is earlier than our other 1861 edition (3270) and has an unusual boundary for Utah, extending east in Nebraska in the northeast corner. Other changes from the later 1861 edition include H.G. Bond as publisher, no County formation date in the Explanation list, different map in the Zoological Distribution inset, and some changes to topography. An earlier edition, 1860, is listed by Phillips as done by M.F. Maury (Maury's name was dropped after the Civil War began because of his support for the Confederacy); also, a late edition, 1868, by H.H. Lloyd. This the first edition copyrighted by Smith. See our two 1862 editions. With black top and bottom rollers. The United States is panted in full color by county; Mexico by state.

This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold.

Note
The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289); 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities; 1857 published with the reports; 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750); 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping. Without color.

Note
Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484). Full color by state. Folded into brown cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico, Central America, West Indies, &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt.

Note
Important U.S. Railroad map; civil war references. Goldthwait did an early map of the Mississippi Valley in 1833 (see Karrow index), engraved for Johnson (large N.A. 1859) and Colton (County Map of N.A. 1864) and produced several beautiful railroad maps. Colton put out a later edition of this map (see Phillips 909). This map is extraordinary for its graphic clarity and elegance. Two inset maps show railroad routes in New England and the Mid West. The west is largely empty except for California where many towns are listed along with topographical features. Many lists of statistics are provided (showing population growth) as well as a list of the seceding southern states with dates of secession. Railroad routes are shown as single and double track, including the width of the gauge. Full color map, folded into textured brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Goldthwait's Map Of The United States & Canada" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
Separate issue of Johnston's National Atlas Map of the United States. Rare variant issue of this map: it has an inset of Charleston Vicinity and Harbor that does not appear on any other issues of the maps, and most importantly, the southern slave states and northern free states are color coded (solid red for slave and outline red for free). Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W."

Note
Huge wall map similar in style and scale to Smith's New Naval and Military Map of the United States done in 1862. However, the Washington Map is a completely different engraving of the U.S., done by W.H. Holmes, who probably is not the same Holmes who worked with Hayden (that Holmes was born in 1846) but is most likely the Holmes mentioned in Tooley's Dictionary as the engraver for Chamber's Encyclopedia and Mitchell's Mexico (perhaps the father of the later Holmes?) The LOC copy (P-Maps 911) is dated 1862 and has in addition to Taintor, the Holmes, Harrison & Co., London, as publishers. Many inset views, portraits of the Presidents in the border, and thematic inset maps. Shows Colorado (created that year) and has an interesting, clear and stark rendition of the western topography. Another elaborate Smith production. The United States is painted in full color by county; Mexico by state. Shows settlements, transportation routes, and county boundaries. Tables of distances, and state sizes, date of admission, miles of railroads and population. Breakdown of churches by denominations. Time differences table. Ornate margins with vignettes of presidents. 1860 census by county and cities. Inset maps include geology, climate, wildlife, food crops, plants and trees, and world hemispheres. Includes topographic profiles of the United States and the North Atlantic.

A group of five full color maps and a view of the U.S. Capital, plus two female figures. The largest map is the Complete Map of the Rail Roads..., which shows the eastern United States with all the railroads in operations and projected. This is a Civil War map in its focus, and typically Magnus in its packing together several maps and views. Another edition, not listed, adds soldiers to the left and right of the main map, illustrating Hardee's tactics (of fighting). The large map is entered in 1859, and the whole production is entered in 1861.
