The essential point in a date, is to know the relative place of an event, or how it stands in time, compared with other important events." |

See notes to other issues of this map. This is earlier than our other 1861 edition (3270) and has an unusual boundary for Utah, extending east in Nebraska in the northeast corner. Other changes from the later 1861 edition include H.G. Bond as publisher, no County formation date in the Explanation list, different map in the Zoological Distribution inset, and some changes to topography. An earlier edition, 1860, is listed by Phillips as done by M.F. Maury (Maury's name was dropped after the Civil War began because of his support for the Confederacy), also, a late edition, 1868, by H.H. Lloyd. This the first edition copyrighted by Smith. See our two 1862 editions. With black top and bottom rollers. The United States is panted in full color by county, Mexico by state. |

This is a composite of all 13 maps. The owner of the 13 maps did not include the 2 western maps in this group for some reason, roughly Dakota and Indian Territory, or they may have been lost over time. Each set of these maps was made to order custom by Rand McNally so it is possible that these 13 maps comprise the entire set. The other 2 maps of the western US to the pacific are in the set but they are at a smaller scale so they are not in this composite image. |

This large four sheet wall map of the United States west to the 100th meridian must have been intended to accompany Burr's 1839 thirteen sheet American Atlas of postal wall maps (see our 0104.000), although there is little record of its publishing other than a listing in Phillips Maps of America, p.896. The American Atlas has a large map of the United States from coast to coast, but it lacks the detail of this wall map, which shows all most all of the postal roads, canals, and railroads that are delineated on the large scale individual state maps of the American Atlas. That detail makes this wall map one of the best large area road maps of the United States as a whole, of the period - more detailed than Tanner's Map of the United States or Mitchell's Reference and Distance Map of the United States. Burr likely published it as an addendum to the American Atlas to give a larger overview of the road system of the entire United States. Ristow (p.106) mentions that Burr published an edition of the American Atlas in 1842, so it is likely that this map was added to the set then. We are presuming that John Arrowsmith was the publisher and printer because of the similarity of style between this wall map and the American Atlas which he published for Burr, but his name does not appear on the map. There is no key or legend, only a scale of miles, and only two classes of roads are shown, primary and secondary, compared to four classes of roads shown on the American Atlas state maps. In the lower right corner is an untitled inset map of North and South America that is a slighly simplified version of part of John Arrowsmith's Map of the World on Mercators Projection, 1844 (see our 4613.002), further evidence of the John Arrowsmith involvement in publishing this wall map. |

2nd edition or state of this map, with printed date of 1804 but with estimated date of 1805 based on the naming of Michigan Territory which was formed in 1805 The 1804 first edition (see LOC copy) does not name Michigan. Other changes from the first edition include new public surveys on the Indiana Territory and Ohio border and the addition of a Rapids between Jallot Lake and Great Falls on the Red River. Also of note is the coloring of the Lousiana Territory green all the way to the Pacific coast on the inset map of North America. Other copies we have seen show the Lousiana Territory extending only to the Rocky Mountains - the 1809 and the 1812 editions have a dotted line marking the boundary roughly at the Rocky Mountains. This 1805 edition and the 1804 edition do not have such a line north of the the 42nd parallel. |

This small hand atlas has six early maps, three of which are particularly important to the mapping of the American Revolution: The Seat of War in the Northern Colonies and The seat of War in the Middle British Colonies (both derived from the Evans/Pownall maps), and the Seat of War in the Southern Colonies (by Bernard Romans). Nicknamed the "Holster Atlas" because it was made for the used of British army officers. All maps in outline color, folded and bound into book with paper covered boards and quarter leather with "American Pocket Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

The first edition. With inset maps of fourteen cities, South Florida, Oregon and the Mandan Districts (with a chart of the Outlet of Oregon River), two Statistical tables, and fourteen profiles of portages, canals and railroads. With Tanner's "Memoir...Intended to Accompany His New Map of the United States." This was one of the most popular general maps of the eastern United States and went through several editions (Phillips, Karrow, Yale, and Howes show editions of 1829, 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1838, 1839, 1841, 1843, and 1850). Distances on all major roads are shown between towns, an effort that Tanner states in the Memoir caused the map to take twice as long to produce. Latitude is measured from Washington, D.C., making this a truly "American" map. Although Tanner states that "The new map of the United States is founded on, and embraces generally, the valuable and original information, contained in our American Atlas," the general form of the map bears a striking resemblance to J.&A. Walker's Map of the United States published in London in 1827, a fact that Tanner does not mention. Howes (T23) shows "An Alphabetical Index to the four sheet map of the United States," also to accompany editions of the map. This is one of best early large maps of the United States and the premier map for its period, without equal until Mitchell produced the first edition of his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in 1834. Kept in a half leather case with ties to keep it closed. Measuring 23x18, it has "Tanner's United States" embossed on the red leather spine. |

First edition. This map is entirely a copy of Arrowsmith's Map of the United States (see our 1796 issue) except for certain parts (mentioned by Tardieu in his "Note" above the title) that Tardieu has altered and improved, based on other sources. A Plan of Washington, D.C. is also added. Later editions depart more radically from Arrowsmith and this actually becomes a better map in many respects (certainly more up to date regarding new States and Territories) than the Arrowsmith editions, although Arrowsmith remains better in the areas west of the Mississippi. G. Gibbs name on label- a famous scientist, see DAB. Map folds into a new brown cloth folding case 32x26 with "United States P.F. Tardieu 1802" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

Watermark, J. Whatman 1811, NE sheet, lower left. Comparing to 79(d), 1804, I cannot find the changes indicated by Stevens, and comparing to 79(f), which only has added "-1815" in ms, I cannot find any changes either. It could be that this copy of 79(e) is later than the one Stevens saw as indicated by the 1811 watermark. There may be a 79(e) without the 1811 watermakr that is earlier. Outline color by state. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 18 sections. Sheets fold, each with a label pasted to the linen backing reading "Sold by W. Faden, Geographer to His Majesty and to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. No. 5 Charing Cross." The four map sheets lie folded between two brown card end sheets, inside their original marbled paper slip case 22x13.5 with the same paste down label. |

Third edition. Shows Colona, Shoshone, Nevada. The maker of this map must have seen copies of Mitchell's 1859 New National Map - this has the same proposed territorial names that Mitchell used that year. This also has a line dividing the northern and southern states in the civil war. According to Phillips Maps, this was also No. 48 in the Atlas Universel for 1862. Map is dissected into 21 sections and mounted on tan linen with the book plate of Andriveau-Goujon. Covers are dark green cloth 23.5x14.5 with "Etats-Unis Et Mexique. Andriveau-Goujon. Rue Du Bac, 2I." stamped in gold on the front with the same embossed gold and green globe as the 1862 issue. The spine is stamped with "Etats-Unis" in gold. Map has full color by state. |

1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color. |

1st edition, 1st wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first "original" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. The case for the map has a leather label saying "Traveler's Map of the United States." Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. The map is hand painted in bright full color by state (insets by county), dissected in 24 sections with green paper end sheets, mounted on linen and edged in pink silk. The covers 24x20 are half red leather marbled paper covered boards with ties and a leather label embossed with "Traveller's Map Of The United States" in gilt. |
