This is a late edition of the Colton/Smith map of the United States, first issued in 1843. Smith's name is removed and the title is modified to emphasize railroad development. No mention of the Civil War is made on the map even though the map was published during the fighting. There are many updates to the geography, showing new states and territories as well as railroads.

The New Naval And Military Map Of The United States. By J. Calvin Smith, Author Of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map Of The U.S. Travellers' Guide &c. 1862. J. Baker & Co. Publishers. J.M. Atwood, Map Engraver 517 Minor St. Philadelphia, Pa. Entered ... 1862 by Robert P. Smith ... Pennsylvania. (with 5 inset maps and 3 profiles).

Note
1st ed. Stevenson identifies 3 issues. Very beautiful and elaborate map showing the hand of Robert Pearsal Smith (has similarities graphically to his N.Y. State Map of 1860). The map is drawn by J.M. Atwood, but is credited to J.C. Smith, "Author of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map of the U.S., Traveler's Guide, &c." R.P. Smith is obviously competing with J.H. Colton by using J.C. Smith's name. Also, the population statistics for the 1860 census are listed, "in advance of official publication" (see Colton letter dated 1861 on this subject). Many inset views relating to the civil war, portraits of Union Generals, and thematic map insets. The U.S. map bears a striking resemblance to Colton's U.S. map of the same period (We suspect intentional on Smith's part) but it is different. H.H. Lloyd did a similar map in 1866 (High Ridge #18-165), probably by obtaining Smith's map copyright for this map and the New York State Map in 1865 when Smith left the map publishing business (Ristow p 377). With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county. Inset showing crops and animals of the U.S. Table of distances. Table of time differences. Profiles route of Lieut. A.W. Whipple's route for Pacific Railroad.

Also published by Holmes Harrison & Co., London. Many changes from the 1861 edition in the west indicate that the 1861 edition was hurriedly put out without filling in all the topography. Under the title is a listing of the Slave States with the Note: "The States Marked thus * Claim to have seceded from the United States." Loss in the top four inches of the map, rebacked. Printed by T.P. Wagner, Philadelphia, who may have added the topographical information. This is the third Smith edition, after the 1861 and the early 1862. With black top and bottom rollers. The United States is panted in full color by county; Mexico by state. Shows settlements, transportation routes, and county boundaries. Tables of distances, and state sizes, date of admission, miles of railroads and population. Breakdown of churches by denominations. Time differences table. Ornate margins with vignettes of presidents. 1860 census by county and cities. Inset maps include geology, climate, wildlife, food crops, plants and trees, and world hemispheres. Includes topographic profiles of the United States and the North Atlantic.

Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Outline color by state. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.
