The existence of this book of penmanship throws interesting light on our other book of penmanship by Frances Henshaw, our 2501.000. This book by Harriet Baker is dated four years earlier, 1819, and from another school in Windsor, Vermont (Henshaw's school was in Middlebury, Vermont). Generally, the two books follow very similar structure, both the text and the maps, which would indicate that the production of these books of penmanship was more frequent than previously thought and also suggests that there was a common template used, even by different schools, in their construction. It can be said that Baker's maps are exquisite, perhaps a bit more so than Henshaw's, but Henshaw's text descriptions of the states are more elaborate than Baker's. For some reason, Baker omits maps of New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, while including descriptions of most of them. Henshaw has no map or description of Michigan or Illinois. For the sources of the maps and text, see our entry for Henshaw's book, 2501.000. The Osher Map Library has a copy of another book of penmanship, also from Mr. Dunham's School in Windsor Vermont, titled “Catharine M. The travellers guide. A new and correct map of the United States, including great portions of Missouri Territory, Upper & Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, The Floridas, Spanish Provinces &c. Collected and compiled from the most undoubted authorities by Samuel Lewis, Geographer and Draftsman, 1819. Published, printed and coloured by Henry Charles, Philada. Copy Right secured according to law.
List No
2482.000
Note
Highly detailed, goes west to 110th meridian. Streeter 3804, 3803. Probably influenced by Melish, nonetheless this is an outstanding map, with much of interest in the Missouri Territory. There is a small vignette of a "Traveler" placed over the title, indicating that this was a map to be used as a travel guide. Shows the new Alabama Territory, an interesting configuration of Illinois around Lake Michigan, and strange east west running mountain ranges leading to the Rockies. Lewis and Clark information is incorporated in the upper Missouri River area. The northern boundary with Canada is strange: it follows the 47.5 parallel and the Upper Missouri River. Outline color. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Philadelphia.

List No

Note
Lacking the two eastern sheets which include the title. This issue is earlier slightly than our complete 1819 edition (Stevens 79 (i)) with less development shown in the area around the junction of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers, which were settling up rapidly at that time (see David Thomas "Travels Through The Western Country"). However, it has the northern and (most of) the southern flaps which place it later than Stevens 79 (h). So it is probably an unrecorded state of the map. Map has light blue silk edging, is dissected into 25 sections, and folds into a new blue cloth folding case 26x17 with "United States A. Arrowsmith 1819" stamped in gilt on the spine.
