Map Illustrating The Position Of Duluth In The United States. M.H. Traubel's Lithographic Establishment 409 Chestnut St. Phila.
List No

Note
The date is estimated from a similar, smaller map, also printed by Traubel, which is part of a report on the Harbor of Duluth issued in 1876 (see our 3394). A huge area encompassing the Western States and Canada is shaded in pale yellow indicating the "Area Tributary To The Harbor Of Duluth Over 2,000,000 Of Square Miles." This larger map is clearly a separate, unfolded issue on thin paper. It promotes Duluth as the trade center of a vast area of the northwestern U.S. and southwestern Canada ("2,000,000 of Square miles"). It is quite a wonderful map, full of interesting information on climate, mining, railroads, canals, railroads, land grants - all with the unlikely slant of emphasizing Duluth. Karrow lists several related Duluth maps by Traubel (Karrow 7-0191, 7-0193, 7-0198, 7-0793). Full color by state.

Note
This is the only War of 1812 map in the Streeter sale. It covers the area of conflict along the U.S. and Canadian border, showing forts on the U.S. side and a great deal of detail on Canadian townships with a separate listing of towns in the various districts. The Karpinski copy adds Doolittle as engraver. The following year Kensett with Shelton put out a more general map of the U.S. showing vignettes of sea battles. Outline color. Not in Phillips. Scarce.

A map of New England, being the first that ever was here cut, and done by the best pattern that could be had, which being in some places defective, it made the other less exact: Yet doth it sufficiently show the situation of the country and conveniently well the distance of Places. The figures that are joyned with the Names of Places are to distinguish such as have been assaulted by the Indians from others. (to accompany) A Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New-England, from ... 1607 to this present year 1677. (with) The Happiness of a People in the Wisdome of their Rulers Directing and in Obedience of their Brethren Attending unto what Israel ought to do: Recommended in a Sermon ... Boston, Printed by John Foster. 1676.
List No
4479.009
Note
This is a facsimile of the folding map of New England originally published in this volume, attributed to John Foster, who is thought to have been the only man in Boston to have made woodcuts during that period. The layout of the map might be slightly disorienting because it depicts the western part of New England along the top of the sheet and the northern regions (including the White Hills of what is now New Hampshire) along the right side. The survey was commissioned by the government of Massachusetts to justify the colonies northern and southern boundaries, which are indicated by two parallel lines on the map. The map shows New England from Nantucket to Pemaquid Point and from New Haven almost to the White Mountains. Map shows name of places, distances, rivers, sailing ships, etc.

Note
A scarce railroad map of the eastern U.S. with an untitled inset map of North America. The style is a greatly simplified cartography showing railroads and canals. At least two other versions of this map appeared in 1856: one without the inset map (Karrow 1-1609), and one with a different inset map of the City of New York (Modelski 30). Dinsmore published the American Railway Guide in the 1850's which included a smaller railway map (see Modelski 10, 16). Richard Fisher wrote for both Colton and Johnson - Statistical Gazetteer, History of the Civil War, text in the Johnson Family Atlas and Colton's General Atlas, and others. In covers of J.G. Wells, who is also listed as publisher of Karrow 1-1610. Schonberg & Co. are listed as "Acrographers" which is a form of printing we have never seen before. Map is full color by state, and folded into embossed brown cloth covers 16x10 with "New Rail Road Map Of The U. States & Canada J.G. Wells" and a decorative leaf design stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachure.

Full Title
Dinsmore's Complete Map Of The Railroads & Canals In The United States & Canada Carefully Compiled from Authentic Sources by Richard S. Fisher, Editor Of The American Rail Road & Steam Navigator Guide. New-York. Published By Dinsmore & Company, No. 9 Spruce St. Engraved In Relief For Power Press Printing by Schonberg & Co. Acrographers, 75 Nassau Street New York 1856. Entered ... 1856 by Dinsmore & Co. ... New York.
List No

The map of New England is the scarcer of the two - it has six vignettes in the decorative border, four of which are views of Montreal, Toronto, New York, and Boston, as well as three inset maps of Boston, New York and the railroad route from Washington to New York. The accompanying map of the mid western states was published with Smith's "Western Tourist or Emigrant's Guide" 1853 and separately (see our #2962 and #190). Both maps in full color by county.
