This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold. |

First edition. This is the source of Colton's two General Atlas regional maps of the west, beginning with the 1864 atlas edition. This was the first map to show Montana (Wheat). Colton also issued in 1862 (W. Heckrotte copy) "Colton's Map of the Pacific States, California and Oregon...and British Columbia" which is from the same plate, earlier, and goes further north to include much of the Canadian west, but does not go as far east. All these maps derive from "Johnson's New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our 1859 edition, #4012) which was first issued in 1856 (We assume this date because our copy says entered in 1856). This shows further that the relationship between Johnson and Colton included Colton using Johnson's maps, as well as Johnson using Colton's maps in Johnson's Family Atlas. Folded into dark green cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean. &c., &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by county. |

Removed from Palmer's 1869 "Report of Surveys...for a route extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean." Palmer used an exact copy Keeler's 1868 reduced scale edition of his National Map of the United States without credit in this first issue although Palmer's map adds much material along the line of the proposed southern continental route, especially in the Grand Canyon, in fact, this map is best known as the first map to use the name "Grand Canyon" of the Colorado. The Kansas Pacific had dreams of extending their line to California, as shown on this map, but it never happened. The map shows the routes of the Northern Pacific, the Union and Central Pacific, and the Southern Route. Ms color red and blue lines have been drawn on the various routes, adding an additional route from Centreville, Nevada, to Portland, Oregon (probably following Dodge's proposals - see his report). The main Kansas Pacific line has at least sixteen proposed branches! There is a later issue of this map that credits Keeler as a source (see our copy). |

| Full Title |
Map Illustrating The Position Of Duluth In The United States. M.H. Traubel's Lithographic Establishment 409 Chestnut St. Phila. |

4443.000 |
| Note |
The date is estimated from a similar, smaller map, also printed by Traubel, which is part of a report on the Harbor of Duluth issued in 1876 (see our 3394). A huge area encompassing the Western States and Canada is shaded in pale yellow indicating the "Area Tributary To The Harbor Of Duluth Over 2,000,000 Of Square Miles." This larger map is clearly a separate, unfolded issue on thin paper. It promotes Duluth as the trade center of a vast area of the northwestern U.S. and southwestern Canada ("2,000,000 of Square miles"). It is quite a wonderful map, full of interesting information on climate, mining, railroads, canals, railroads, land grants - all with the unlikely slant of emphasizing Duluth. Karrow lists several related Duluth maps by Traubel (Karrow 7-0191, 7-0193, 7-0198, 7-0793). Full color by state. |

This is a somewhat later issue of the Palmer map that adds a Keeler credit in the title, above the title adds the date June 1869 next to three railroad symbol explanations, and adds a table of "Distances by the Kansas Pacific Railway to Denver & Cheyenne thence by the Pacific Railroad to San Francisco," and eliminates the "explanations" in the lower right. |
