Highly detailed, important map. 1st edition 1863. This map was the "mother" map for Bancroft's several issues of the pocket map versions of the northern and southern halves of this map, as well as for many later issues of this map. It is wonderfully detailed, full of endless information on the western states, information that is found in few other maps of the same period. It differs from the 1863 edition in not having an inset map of Hawaii and in showing Montana and Idaho. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county, outlined by state.

1st ed 1868. From Pacific States map. This is the only edition of this map published by A.L. Bancroft. H.H. Bancroft published the first edition in 1868. The southern mate to this map was published in many more editions: 1868, 71, 73, 76 and 78. When comparing this edition to the original 1867 "mother" map, there are many changes in the eastern half of the map, especially the area around Yellowstone Lake, western Montana and eastern Idaho. The litho is beginning to look tired in some places. Full color by county. Map is folded into patterned navy blue cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Bancroft's Map of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, And British Columbia." stamped in gilt.

Map Of The Territory Of The United States From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean; Originally prepared to accompany the Reports of the Explorations For A Pacific Railroad Route ... Note
Reissue, with new discoveries, of 1857 Warren "Map of the Territory of the United States..." Although Freyhold's name is not on the title, he clearly redrew this map from his earlier 1858 edition (where his name does appear on the title). This is earlier than the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions (Streeter 3080 and 3081), and should be distinguished from them in having the title still in the lower left corner (not in the lower center as in the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions), and because it does not have the Alaska inset, has 47 authorities vs. 48, and is dated Aug 26, 1867 in Ms. next to the same inscription mentioned by Streeter on his later copy (Wm. E. Merrill, etc., which Streeter mistakes for E. Hamill). Mail routes in red ink (original?)(Streeter says they were dropped from the second 1868 ed.) plus many interesting Ms. additions of names of forts, and extension of pacific railroad. Cf. Wheat 1185. Wheat does not mention this edition and was not aware of it (see his "correction" of Wheeler's mention of the map in the note, p. 244). See a very informative article by Lewis Buttery on a slightly earlier state of this map (early 1867) found at West Point - "Warren Map of 1867." Outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections, edged in blue silk, and folded into a new burgundy cloth folding case 30x22 with "Warren & Freyhold. Map of Exploratations (sic) for Pacific R.R. 1865-67" stamped in gilt.

Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. From the notes on the map, this appears to have been a difficult stretch of road. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post.

This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place.

This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility."

First edition. This is the source of Colton's two General Atlas regional maps of the west, beginning with the 1864 atlas edition. This was the first map to show Montana (Wheat). Colton also issued in 1862 (W. Heckrotte copy) "Colton's Map of the Pacific States, California and Oregon...and British Columbia" which is from the same plate, earlier, and goes further north to include much of the Canadian west, but does not go as far east. All these maps derive from "Johnson's New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our 1859 edition, #4012) which was first issued in 1856 (We assume this date because our copy says entered in 1856). This shows further that the relationship between Johnson and Colton included Colton using Johnson's maps, as well as Johnson using Colton's maps in Johnson's Family Atlas. Folded into dark green cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean. &c., &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by county.

Note
A spectacular map, missed by Wheat. With full and outline color. Shows the route of the proposed Northern Pacific Railroad. Covers the entire U.S. and Canada west of the Mississippi, and south to the 38th parallel. One immediately recognizes the use of the Warren/Freyhold "Map of the Territory of the United States..." of 1868, for the lower portion of this map - it is an exact copy. The upper portion appears to be a copy of some official English and/or Canadian survey map. Isothermal lines, railroad routes, latitudes of major European Cities, Distances to Asia, Coal fields, and notes about usability of the soil and forests are added. A profile shows the "Difference Between The Elevations of the Northern Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroads." Relif shown by hachures.

The map shows the route of the railroad from the Missouri river to Humboldt Wells in Nevada (the Central Pacific beat them to this point) and provides great topographic detail on both sides of the route, for distances varying from 40 to 100 miles. A profile of the route appears below the main map. Separately published by the Union Pacific, this is a scarce map. Without color. Scale 20 miles to 1 inch. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
This map expands the coverage of the large Pacific States Map to include New Mexico, Colorado, most of Dakota and all of Montana. However, because of its relatively small size, there is much less detail shown. This same map appears in two parts in Clarke's New School Geography (see our copy) also published by Bancroft in 1866. In fact, we believe that the map was made primarily for the school geography (hence the simplification) and secondarily as a separate map. Wheat trashes the map: "we are surprised that Knight should have a hand in so inferior a job...No getting away from it, we must point the finger of shame at Knight for this map." The simplification is understandable for a school map, but showing the Green River entering the Colorado in Arizona is inexcusable at this date (especially for a school atlas!). Curiously, the companion Outline Map of the Pacific States in four sheets which accompanied the Clarke School Geography does show the Green and Colorado correctly. Notwithstanding its faults, the map is quite attractive, and, for some reason, scarce. With an excellent catalog of Bancroft's maps on the inside cover. Full color by county, and folded into stamped light brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Bancroft's Map Of The Rocky Mountain States, And The Pacific Coast." in gold. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
The date is estimated from a similar, smaller map, also printed by Traubel, which is part of a report on the Harbor of Duluth issued in 1876 (see our 3394). A huge area encompassing the Western States and Canada is shaded in pale yellow indicating the "Area Tributary To The Harbor Of Duluth Over 2,000,000 Of Square Miles." This larger map is clearly a separate, unfolded issue on thin paper. It promotes Duluth as the trade center of a vast area of the northwestern U.S. and southwestern Canada ("2,000,000 of Square miles"). It is quite a wonderful map, full of interesting information on climate, mining, railroads, canals, railroads, land grants - all with the unlikely slant of emphasizing Duluth. Karrow lists several related Duluth maps by Traubel (Karrow 7-0191, 7-0193, 7-0198, 7-0793). Full color by state.

This was the best general map of the American West published by the Topographical Engineers until the Emory and Warren maps of 1857. Wheat calls it "beautiful... a synthesis of the many and varied cartographic activities of the U.S. Army carried on in the West since the onset of the Mexican War, with numerous individual maps subjected to correction and enhanced by new data." A large and imposing production, the map shows the new political divisions of California, Utah and New Mexico and is engraved in the best style by the well known Sherman and Smith firm of New York. Note
The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line; Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Map is full color, folded into red cloth covers 15x10 with "Mexico." stamped in gold. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Prime meridian: Washington.
