Note
This is an important historical map of the Second Boer War as well as a snapshot in time from the beginning of the 20th Century. Dating the map can be confirmed by two historical events. First, pictured on the upper right corner is Major General B. Powell. This is Major General Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell. Baden-Powell was promoted to this rank on May 16, 1900 so the map had to be printed after that date. General Baden-Powell would later become famous as the Father of the Boy Scouts. Second, Sir Geo. White (Commander of British Forces) would be appointed Governor of Gibraltar on May 22, 1900. This puts the map having been printed sometime between the middle of May to the first part of June 1900 and the map was out of date (with the departure of White) just as this map was being printed. Just prior to this map being printed, Winston Churchill had been captured in the war and reports came out saying that he had been killed. He had escaped, though, and rode proudly on horseback into Pretoria (Pretoria is shown on the map) on June 5, 1900 about the date the map was printed. Queen Victoria died in January, 1901, making this the last or one of the last maps featuring her portrait. This is the only copy we have been able to find.
