Note (Composite removing linen gaps between sections). From the printed advertisement for the map: "BF STEVENS'S Facsimile of the Unpublished British Headquarters Coloured Manuscript Map of New York and Environs 1782. Reproduced from the Original Drawing in the War Office London. 24 sheets Scale 6 1/2 inches to a mile. 10 feet by 4 feet. The successive British Commanders in Chief in America Generals Sir William Howe, Sir Henry Clinton, and Sir Guy Carleton during their respective occupations of New York and Environs in the Revolution caused this manuscript plan from time to time to be kept up. The plan extends from below Guanas Bay to the Heights of Spikendevi, a distance of about eighteen or nineteen miles. It shows the Fortifications, Defenses, Topography, Streets, Roads, etc. of the whole of the Island of New York with the Harbor Islands, Water Ways, and River Frontages on the Hudson and East Rivers, the Military Works on Long Island including Brooklyn, the Works in Paulus Hook and parts of the Jersey Shore. It has a copious Table of References to various works British and American, some of them with notes as to the time of their construction or destruction. The Original Drawing, ten feet by four feet, is on a scale of about six and a half inches to a mile. It is handsomely reproduced for subscribers only in careful facsimile on 24 sheets which can be joined up and mounted like the original as a Wall Map or mounted on linen if desired. It will be issued either mounted on linen to fold in book form with leather slip case 13 x 10 inches or the 24 sheets 22 x 15 inches, each will be supplied in a portfolio. Separate Map
Authors Anderson, P.
Full Title Map Exhibiting The Experimental and Located Lines for the New-York and New-Haven Rail-Road ... Projected and Drawn by P. Anderson Civil Engr. Scale 1 to 20,000. Feb. 1845.
List No 6902.000
Note This is probably the prepublication manuscript drawing for the final printed version of this map that was issued in the same year - see our 4218.000. It is twice the size and scale of the final printed version, and is beautifully hand drawn and colored. It is amazing that a map this large has survived outside of an institutional library for so long. Apparently it was kept in a family for several generations. It was leant to us by its current owner so that we could scan it and put it online. From our notes to the printed version: Greatly detailed strip map over twenty feet long showing the surveyed routes of the New York and New Haven Railroad. The line was opened in 1849. The map is unique for a railroad map in its huge size, large scale, elegance of drawing, and variety of information shown (houses, trails, rivers, turnpikes, lighthouses, harbors, hills, swamps, etc.).

Note With red cloth covers 14.5x9 stamped with gilt title reading "Thirty Three Miles Around The City Of New-York." and a small circular map of New York (later editions omit the map on the cover). First issued in 1846, when it was reengraved by Atwood from J.H. Eddy's "Map of the Country Thirty Miles round the City of New York" which was originally issued in 1811 (see our #3472). This is one of Colton's most attractive maps, showing New York and vicinity in circular format surrounded by a vine border with views of City Hall, New York and City Hall, Brooklyn. It was published in many editions for almost fifty years - our latest edition is 1891 (Haskell lists eight editions from 1846 to 1873 only). The early editions were engraved on copper plate (our 1853) and at some point before our 1865 edition the copper plate was transferred to lithographic stone and all subsequent editions were lithographed.

Note 6 sheets, first engraved chart issued by the U.S. Coast Survey. Without color. Hassler's "Magnum Opus" was not completed until a year after his death. This huge chart is the first major production of the survey, begun by Hassler in response to critic's charges that he was not producing usable charts for navigators, and finished by Bache. A smaller single sheet version was issued in 1845.

List No 2784.000
Note 1st ed., 2nd state. Stokes: "This is one of the most beautiful nineteenth century plans or maps of Manhattan Island, and is full of interesting information, It is perhaps the last example of really artistic map-making, as applied to Manhattan Island." Ristow believes that Burr may have drawn this map based on similarities between it and the Burr New York City map that appeared in Burr's New York State Atlas of 1829. Accompanied by the "Summary History.." Stokes describes his copy of the 1st edition as not listing Madison Square and some other differences between the 1836 and 1841 editions which would lead one to conclude that this copy is slightly later than 1836 (it shows Madison Square which was established in 1837) - apparently an unrecorded 2nd state of the first edition. Without color or top and bottom rollers.

Case Map
Authors Eddy, John H.
Full Title Map Of The Country Thirty Miles Round the City of New York. Designed & Drawn by I.H. Eddy of N. York, 1812. To Dewitt Clinton Esqr. Mayor of the City of New York This Map is inscribed by his respectful friend The Author. Published by Prior & Dunning, Map & Chart sellers No. 111 Water Street. Copy Right secured according to Law. Engrd. by P. Maverick, Newark, N. Jersey.
List No 3472.000
Note 1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Full Title Sanitary & Topographical Map of the City and Island of New York Prepared for the Council of Hygiene and Public Health of the Citizens Association. Under the direction of Egbert L. Viele, Topographical Engineer. Entered ... 1865 by Egbert L. Viele ... New York. Ferd. Mayer & Co. Lithographers, 96 Fulton St. N.Y. (with 1 inset map and 3 profiles).
List No 3723.000
Note For some reason Haskell and Stokes date this map 1864 although it was copyrighted by Viele in 1865. Removed from the Report of the Council of Hygiene (see our copy). The map shows all the original water courses of Manhattan Island, with the street grid superimposed on top. Also, three different kinds of land are shown: Marsh, Made Land, and Meadow. Sewer lines are indicated. A very beautiful full color map occasioned by a not so beautiful subject. In 1874 Viele reissued the map in larger format as the Topographical Atlas of the City of New York (see our copy). This map was also published as a separate pocket map, in covers.

Ephemera
Authors New York
Full Title (Deed from the state of New York, signed by Governor George Clinton, Granting 600 acres of land to Thomas Garrison in the township of Cincinnatus, Montgomery County).
List No 4401.000
Note An early deed with the large (9cm diameter) seal of the state attached. The State granted lands in what was designated as the Military Tract to Revolutionary War veterans. The tract comprised twenty five townships of 60,000 acres each, each consisting of 100 lots of 600 acres. Grantees received one lot. Thomas Garrison was granted lot 80 of Township 25, Cincinnatus, by this deed. In 1793, Simeon DeWitt produced a map of the Military Tract, one of his first surveys. The Military Tract was one of the first uses of Township surveys built on square lots of uniform size. Eventually, the U.S. Land Office used a 660 acre unit (1 mile square) as the building block for its surveys in Ohio and westward. Printed form filled in with pen-and-ink and including the signature of Geo. Clinton.
