Map depicts New York as well as Canada and bordering states. Shows state boundaries, county lines, township boundaries, and major roads. Place names in German and English. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. In upper margin: No. VII.

The map shows the English colonies from Cape Ann in Massachusetts to Cape Henry at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. The map extends as far north as the tributaries of the Hudson, and in the southwest it shows the Delaware and Susquehannah Rivers and as far west as the tributaries of the Potomac and Rapahannock. Augustyn and Cohen note the importance of the inset:: 'To the ambitious person, the map would have presented an enticing vista: it displays a loose federation of colonies, between and beyond which there appears to be ample unclaimed land. It creates an image of an area comfortingly linked by civilization but still containing much open territory.'The geography of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey derives from the Thornton-Greene Mapp of Virginia Mary-land, New Jarsey, New-York, & New England (ca 1678), whose depiction of the region is in turn based largely on Augustine Herrman’s Virginia and Maryland (1673). The Thornton-Morden-Lea departs from these prototypes, however, in showing the new colony of Pennsylvania and incorporating changes to the course of the Delaware and place names along its banks. New York and southern New England are drawn from the Thornton-Greene map, which in turn draws on John Seller’s Mapp of New England (1676). Here as well, Thornton, Morden and Lea, have departed substantially from the prototypes: Long Island’s barrier beaches are shown for the first time on a printed map and numerous place names are introduced along the Connecticut coast and on Cape Cod; the boundaries between Massachusetts, Plymouth and Connecticut colonies are drawn; and several roads are shown. Note
This is a very rare color pictorial map of Manhattan, New York. Extends from Battery to 59th St. Includes marvelous illustrations of pre-Depression manhattan. Date estimated. With numerous allegorical vignettes including: Vanderbilt Yacht / Dreaming of the 1928 Election; at the top right, there are portrait images of Al Smith (then Governor of New York) and James A. Reed (Senator from Missouri); Prohibition - the bottles in the water and "enforcement" vignette over the river at the top left; The Gilded Age - the delightful cornucopia vignettes locating the rich and not so rich; Zeppelin & Battle Ship, resembles the USS Los Angeles or the USS Shenandoah, battleship USS Texas; then subways, lines of the IRT, BMT, and elevated train system, churches, hotels, businesses, etc. Includes key at the lower right corner. Klitgaard was a Danish American author, painter, illustrator, educator, and master mariner (1888-1953). This appears to be his only pictorial map. There are many hidden themes and caricatures in this map to be discovered. Date is estimated based on the image of the USS Texas. She was modernized in 1925-26 (losing the cage-mast and one funnel) and then was based out of NYC in August 1927 (with thanks to Harry Newman for this information).

This is probably the prepublication manuscript drawing for the final printed version of this map that was issued in the same year - see our 4218.000. It is twice the size and scale of the final printed version, and is beautifully hand drawn and colored. It is amazing that a map this large has survived outside of an institutional library for so long. Apparently it was kept in a family for several generations. It was leant to us by its current owner so that we could scan it and put it online. From our notes to the printed version: Greatly detailed strip map over twenty feet long showing the surveyed routes of the New York and New Haven Railroad. The line was opened in 1849. The map is unique for a railroad map in its huge size, large scale, elegance of drawing, and variety of information shown (houses, trails, rivers, turnpikes, lighthouses, harbors, hills, swamps, etc.).

With red cloth covers 14.5x9 stamped with gilt title reading "Thirty Three Miles Around The City Of New-York." and a small circular map of New York (later editions omit the map on the cover). First issued in 1846, when it was reengraved by Atwood from J.H. Eddy's "Map of the Country Thirty Miles round the City of New York" which was originally issued in 1811 (see our #3472). This is one of Colton's most attractive maps, showing New York and vicinity in circular format surrounded by a vine border with views of City Hall, New York and City Hall, Brooklyn. It was published in many editions for almost fifty years - our latest edition is 1891 (Haskell lists eight editions from 1846 to 1873 only). The early editions were engraved on copper plate (our 1853) and at some point before our 1865 edition the copper plate was transferred to lithographic stone and all subsequent editions were lithographed.

1st ed., 2nd state. Stokes: "This is one of the most beautiful nineteenth century plans or maps of Manhattan Island, and is full of interesting information, It is perhaps the last example of really artistic map-making, as applied to Manhattan Island." Ristow believes that Burr may have drawn this map based on similarities between it and the Burr New York City map that appeared in Burr's New York State Atlas of 1829. Accompanied by the "Summary History.." Stokes describes his copy of the 1st edition as not listing Madison Square and some other differences between the 1836 and 1841 editions which would lead one to conclude that this copy is slightly later than 1836 (it shows Madison Square which was established in 1837) - apparently an unrecorded 2nd state of the first edition. 1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color; dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note
An early deed with the large (9cm diameter) seal of the state attached. The State granted lands in what was designated as the Military Tract to Revolutionary War veterans. The tract comprised twenty five townships of 60,000 acres each, each consisting of 100 lots of 600 acres. Grantees received one lot. Thomas Garrison was granted lot 80 of Township 25, Cincinnatus, by this deed. In 1793, Simeon DeWitt produced a map of the Military Tract, one of his first surveys. The Military Tract was one of the first uses of Township surveys built on square lots of uniform size. Eventually, the U.S. Land Office used a 660 acre unit (1 mile square) as the building block for its surveys in Ohio and westward. Printed form filled in with pen-and-ink and including the signature of Geo. Clinton.

(Covers to) An atlas of the State of New York, containing a map of the State and of the several counties ... under the superintendance & direction of Simeon DeWitt, Surveyor General, pursuant to an Act of the Legislature, and also the physical geography of the State & of the several counties & statistical tables of the same, by David H. Burr. New York, published by David H. Burr. 1829. Engravd. by Rawdon, Clark & Co. Albany & Rawdon, Wright & Co., New York.

Note
This atlas is the second atlas published in the 19th century of one of the individual states in the U.S., preceded only by Mill's Atlas of South Carolina, issued in 1825, and followed closely, also in 1829, by Greenleaf's Atlas of the State of Maine (Ristow, p96). This copy is the 1st edition, second state, actually published in 1832. Howard Welsh rescued this copy which was obviously about to be broken up and disbound. When we acquired it from his estate it was completely disbound; subsequently we had it rebound and restored. The Map of the City and County of New York is dated 2nd. ed., 1832 ; Haskell 725 lists this as appearing in the 1829 ed. of the Atlas. Therefore, we can presume that there are two 1829 eds., the first state with this map dated 1829 (Haskell 721) and the second state which is this copy with the 1832 map (Haskell 725). The Map of New York State is also dated 1832. All other maps are dated 1829. Full hand painted color. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "New York Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine.
