List of data for the rivers called Amazon, Apurimac [Apurímac] (South America), Mississippi, Missouri and Red Rock (North America): source, outlet and length, in kilometers. Cites information resource, parenthetically, following river length. In addition, asterisks refer to caveats, elucidated at the bottom of the pages. Second and third longest rivers featured in the book, which sequences the one thousand longest rivers in the world, from longest to shortest. “Classifying in order of size is the most common method for organizing information,” according to author Sauzeau-Boetti, who also concedes that “The partial information available regarding rivers, the linguistic problems connected to their identity, and the very elusive nature of the waters, mean that the present classification - like all preceding or following ones - will always be provisional and illusory.”

Note
This is the most ambitious Coloney & Fairchild strip or ribbon map: it shows the Mississippi River from its delta to its source at Lake Itaska, a distance of 2600 miles. It is backed on linen and rolls into paper covered spool with a hand crank. This is the revised edition, with much additional material added on river towns by William Bowen, President of the Pilot's Association of St. Louis (this information comes from the promotion for this map printed on the Ribbon Map of New York City). No record of the first issue found, although a copy exists at the Minnesota Historical Society. The river is colored blue against a black and white background. Distances from New Orleans are printed on the river at intervals to the source. Karrow's listing is for a variant: the map printed in five strips on one sheet and folded into the 1866 edition of Edward's Gazetteer of the Mississippi River. Scarce.

Views; shows Plantations by type; very scarce. In full color; lacks original covers. See our reproduction copy issued by Pelican Press, originally in 1931, and printed by Rand McNally - this reproduction greatly alters the original. Ritzlin catalogue: "Persac was a well known surveyor and landscape painter... the map is quite scarce and normally in poor condition because most copies were used by river pilots to locate plantation landings. Few copies are known in contemporary boards. NUC lists only three copies ... however several copies are located in the south, including one which the Louisiana Supreme Court still uses in land ownership cases." Incredible detail, showing the Plantations on both sides of the river. Four engraved views. Engraved by J.H. Colton. Lacking boards, this copy has some tears at the folds with slight loss at some intersections, some light browning in two areas, but is overall a very good copy. Copies at LSU, Historic New Orleans Collection (504-523-4662). See Antiques Magazine, Nov. 1991 for Persac Article. Norman also published "Norman's New Orleans and Environs" with a map of the city, in 1845 (see our copy).

A composite of two maps that De Fer published separately but also appeared joined together to show the entire course of the Mississippi River. From Ruderman: "De Fer's 2 sheet map is one of the most important maps of the region and one of the earliest maps to incorporate the reports of Jesuit missionaries and explorers active in the early 18th Century. De Fer's map is perhaps the most important and influential regional map of the period, providing significantly updated cartographic information in a number of regions. The map is the first printed map to provide the updated treatment of the Mississippi River later made famous by De L'Isle in his Carte de la Louisiane et du cours du Missisipi. . . (pre-dating De L'Isle's map) , the first to include the updated information along the Gulf Coast transmitted to France by Francoise Le Maire and the first to incorporate the revised and improved mapping of the Great Lakes derived from Jesuit missionary sources in the north. While its cartographic details rival the contemporary maps of Guillaume De L'Isle for primacy, De Fer's map was almost certainly the more influential work at the time it was published, having been commissioned by John Law's Compagnie d'Occident (Company of the West), to provide a graphic depiction of the vast and rich commercial potential of French Louisiana, for which commercial rights had just been ceded to Law's Company of the West. De Fer first began work on his map in 1715, when he issued his La Riviere de Missisipi, et ses Environs, dans l'Amerique Septentrionale ..., based upon a 1701 manuscript map by Guillaume De L'Isle . The 1715 map is essentially the proof state for the lower half of the 2-sheet map, lacking the internal embellishments intended to demonstrate the wealth of the region. With the founding of John Law's Company of the West and Law's being granted by the King of France the rights to commercial control of Louisiana in August 1717, Law commenced an advertising and promotional campaign to attract investors for his new company. A visual tool was undoubtedly needed to help potential investors understand the scope and commercial potential of France's holdings in Louisiana. To fill the need, De Fer was commissioned to create such a map.

First edition, first issue. A larger version of the accompanying map was issued in 1842 with scale of 1:600,000 - this version is unknown to us (and anyone else we have met)- Bray states that only 200 copies were printed; the House of Representatives issued this 1843 edition in 1845 with no changes, although Wagner Camp says the map was smaller and Bray states that it was a more faithful representation of the original 1842 map. See Donald Jackson, The Expeditions of John Charles Fremont, for a history of the Nicollet map and all the Fremont maps. Fremont worked extensively with Nicollet on this map and "this was the work which trained Fremont in cartography." (Jackson). This map was the earliest accurate map of the Northern Plains and the Upper Mississippi. G.K. Warren, in his Memoir, stated that this "map was one of the greatest contributions ever made to American geography." Nicollet died in 1843. His map was years ahead of its time, with its regional concept and sound basis in instrument readings and astronomically determined points. Goetzmann: "Had he lived one more decade, Nicollet would undoubtedly have become the official government cartographer of the whole trans-Mississippi West." Rebound in brown fabric covers with "Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi, I.N. Nicollet, 1843" in gold on the spine.

Wheat calls it "beautiful... a synthesis of the many and varied cartographic activities of the U.S. Army carried on in the West since the onset of the Mexican War, with numerous individual maps subjected to correction and enhanced by new data." A large and imposing production, the map shows the new political divisions of California, Utah and New Mexico and is engraved in the best style by the well known Sherman and Smith firm of New York. Map is without color.
