Note
Dissected in north and south sheets, each in 30 sections. This map is a reduction and reissue of Wyld's famous 1824 Map of North America (Stevens and Tree 63 - four editions from 1824 to 1856) - it does not have the top sheet showing the Arctic, it moves the title from the lower left to middle right (and changes title of course), and it updates some of the western geography, showing the Tule Lakes in California, Fremont's or South Pass, Fts Hall and Boise and the Oregon Trail. However, it keeps the outdated topography of the Great Basin and California used in the 1824 edition - the two large rivers running from the interior of the basin to the Pacific, and the mountain ranges running almost east to west instead of north to south in the basin. Nonetheless, it is a very beautiful map in the best of Wyld's cartographic style. Two insets in the lower right and left, of North America and Islands in the Pacific Ocean (both of which appear in the small General Atlas). Map comes from the family of Kit Carson's clerk. Has paste down catalogue. Wheat 658 (1849) is listed in our copy of Radford's Catalogue, 1975. Though smaller, it is likely derived from this map. With outline color. Sheets fold with marbled end sheets into original brown cloth slip case 25x15.5 with label reading "Canada Mexico &c. United States" (ms) and "James Wyld, Geographer To Her Majesty. Charing Cross, East ..."

3rd edition. Martin shows 10 issues 1825-47. 1st edition was 1825 (see W.H. copy). The 1826 edition of this map (see our copy) was the base for the White, Gallaher & White "Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico" of 1828, which was then copied by Disturnell in 1846 (see our copy). Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Lake Tahoe is labeled Flag Lake, a name we have never seen before. The 1826 edition of this map established the more northerly boundary of New Mexico and Mexico that White Gallaher & White copied and was ultimately used by Disturnell in his map, and affected the treaty negotiations (see Martin). See our 1847, fifth edition, #5158. Full color map, folded into dark brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with "Tanner's Travelling Map Of Mexico" stamped in gilt.

Note
The first map of Mexican War issued by Mitchell and one of the earliest separately published map of the conflict. It shows the area between Monterey and the Rio Grande, with two inset maps, one of the battlefield at Monterey and the other showing the general area of Mexico and Texas. There is a printed note: "The Publisher has in preparation and will issue on the 10th of November, 1846, a Map of Mexico (including the States of Yucatan & Upper California) the size & price of which will be the same as the present map." This is referring to the 1846 issue of Mitchell's "Map of Mexico..." (see our #3119). Another copy of this map was printed without the publisher's note. Map is without color. Relief shown by hachures.

A scarce descriptive guide to Mexico issued on the eve of the Mexican War. Not listed in any references. On the brown leather cover is gilt stamped "Mexico and Yucatan." The small full color map is, according to the publisher's statement, based on the SDUK map of Mexico. The map has an interesting note: "The road represented on the map from Matamoras to Mexico, is the one which Gen. Taylor will most probably take, should he be directed to march on the capital." The note goes on to say that Upper California has been omitted from the map because it is "improbable that the region in question will ever again be attached to Mexico." Related pocket maps and guides published by Thomas, Cowperthwait and by Mitchell are our #4482 and #3319, #4594.

The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line; Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Map is full color, folded into red cloth covers 15x10 with "Mexico." stamped in gold. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Prime meridian: Washington.

Note
Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt.
