Note	Third edition. Shows Colona, Shoshone, Nevada. The maker of this map must have seen copies of Mitchell's 1859 New National Map - this has the same proposed territorial names that Mitchell used that year. This also has a line dividing the northern and southern states in the civil war. According to Phillips Maps, this was also No. 48 in the Atlas Universel for 1862. Map is dissected into 21 sections and mounted on tan linen with the book plate of Andriveau-Goujon. Covers are dark green cloth 23.5x14.5 with "Etats-Unis Et Mexique. Andriveau-Goujon. Rue Du Bac, 2I." stamped in gold on the front with the same embossed gold and green globe as the 1862 issue. The spine is stamped with "Etats-Unis" in gold. Map has full color by state.

Note	Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and the Mormon Temple at Salt Lake City, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850, and a Note and list of Authorities which reads in part "The part of this Map, between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean, was taken (with the consent of Capt. A.A. Humphreys) principally from a map compiled from the following authorities by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Topl Engrs...In the Office of Pacific Rail Road Surveys, War Department." The map referred to must be the 1855 edition (see our copy) of Warren's General Map for the Pacific Railroad Reports. The list of Authorities is almost identical to the list on that map. Also, the map details of the west used in Johnson's map follow the 1855 edition in scope. Karrow lists many issues of this map from 1857 to 1861, with the views varying in each issue, and with Colton taking over as publisher in 1860. See our late Colton edition of 1890 (our #5150). Note	With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map is folded into dark blue cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" printed in black on a tan paper label.

Note	1st ed. Stevenson identifies 3 issues. Very beautiful and elaborate map showing the hand of Robert Pearsal Smith (has similarities graphically to his N.Y. State Map of 1860). The map is drawn by J.M. Atwood, but is credited to J.C. Smith, "Author of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map of the U.S., Traveler's Guide, &c." R.P. Smith is obviously competing with J.H. Colton by using J.C. Smith's name. Also, the population statistics for the 1860 census are listed, "in advance of official publication" (see Colton letter dated 1861 on this subject). Many inset views relating to the civil war, portraits of Union Generals, and thematic map insets. The U.S. map bears a striking resemblance to Colton's U.S. map of the same period (We suspect intentional on Smith's part) but it is different. H.H. Lloyd did a similar map in 1866 (High Ridge #18-165), probably by obtaining Smith's map copyright for this map and the New York State Map in 1865 when Smith left the map publishing business (Ristow p 377). Note	Late edition, 1st edition 1830. Lacks the note in the lower left corner regarding the origin of the term Fredonia, such note appears in the earlier editions. However, the western geography of this edition is most interesting, as it incorporates Fremont's discoveries. It does not have indications of gold discoveries. Graphically, a very beautiful map. See Spafford's Geography 1809 for further discussion of Fredonia. Cruchley published the 1830, 1832, and 1833 editions (as did Laurie, according to Wheat 393).

Note	Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Note	Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484). Full color by state. Folded into brown cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico, Central America, West Indies, &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt.
