We assume that this Williams is the son of Wellington Williams and that he took over his father's map and reissued it. It is interesting to see that John M. Atwood published this map - it appears that he not only published maps, but also drew them for others, i.e. Colton and Ensign & Thayer. Inset maps include: Island Of Newfoundland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut, The Atlantic Ocean Showing The Communications By Cable And Steam Between Europe And The United States, Is. Of Porto Rico, Virgin Is. And S. Cruz, Islands Of Japan ..., Map Of The Great Pacific Ocean With It's Shores And Islands, Alaska, and The Sandwich Islands Or Hawaiian Group. Full color by state. Note Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black.

List No 3718.000
Note A separate copy of the map published in Forbes' History of Upper and Lower California. It is a lithograph, taken from the engraved edition of the map that appears in the first edition of Forbes' book. At first we thought this must be from one of the two reprints done in 1919 and 1939, but it is not. Possibly Smith Elder put out a later edition with this lithographed map but left the date the same on the title page. However, we still think it is more modern than that - we will keep looking for the source. Inset maps are titled: Sketch of Port Bodega. Harbour of San Francisco. Sketch of Puerto de S. Diego. Sketch of Monterrey Harbour. Sketch of St. Barbara Harbour. Sketch of Port S. Gabriel, or S. Pedro. Map has outline color by country. Prime meridian is Greenwich.
