A scarce small atlas of ten maps published in Holland, but authored by a school teacher from the Dutch Colony in Holland, Michigan. It was most likely sold to Dutch Americans and those in Holland planning to emigrate or who had relatives in America. The date is estimated by Phillips and Koeman. Koeman lists an earlier edition of 1849, with five maps. There is a double page of text at the end of the maps, with lists of distances by steamboat and railroad. The copy listed in Phillips has a cover title, not present here. Maps are hand painted with outline color.

Uncolored map, with reference to places. The first edition. This is the only edition of the map to have a date on it; we can find no other changes to the maps in the 1836 and 1837 editions. Includes references to Capitals, important towns ... roads canals and railroads. In the 1842 edition many of the upper left inset maps are dropped to allow better coverage of Iowa. There is an extra map of Pennsylvania tipped in that is the Anthony Finley 1834 double page atlas map of Pennsylvania, but with Tanner's name as publisher and printed on thin folding paper. Included are four small maps of Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. With a catalogue of Tanner's works. Linen covered boards with label affixed to the cover with title, "Tanner's American Traveller, or Guide Through the United States."

We believe this is Lucas' largest separate map of Baltimore. Papenfuse illustrates editions of 1822, 1836 and 1841. This 1852 issue may be the last (Ristow). It is interesting to note that the copyright has been renewed to 1852, indicating that Lucas was still active as a map publisher. Full color. Map is dissected into 18 sections, edged in green silk, and mounted on linen. Folds with marbled end sheets into a new mint green cloth folding case 19.5x13 with "Baltimore F. Lucas 1852" stamped in gold on the spine.
