Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W."; the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color.

Highly detailed, large scale map of the state issued "with linen backs for Army Officers" (this copy without linen). At the eastern border with Tennessee is a printed note next to a railroad line: "Military Rail Road propos: by the President in his last message to connect Danville, Ky with Knoxville, Ten." This has the usual idiosyncratic Lloyd ads, testimonials from Military authorities, and disparagements of competitor H.H. Lloyd. Oddly, folded into stamped dark brown cloth Colton covers 16x10 saying "Map of Kentucky - G.W. & C.B. Colton" in gilt, apparently as issued. Second edition, first edition being 1862. Full color by county. Publisher's advertisement inside front cover.

Stephenson shows an edition of 1862, so this is the second edition. This copy backed with linen, as issued ("with linen backs for Army Officers $1.50"). The 1862 edition had battle sites underlined in red. Full color. Map is not dissected. Folds into pattered dark brown cloth covered boards 18.5x12 with ties. Battlefields not shown on this edition. This is the same as our other copy except that the extensive coal fields in Eastern and Western Kentucky have been manuscript colored in gray wash, carefully delineated. David Owen published maps showing the Kentucky coal fields in 1852 and 1853 and they may have been the source of the information. The Kentucky coal fields were considered a strategic asset by the North in the Civil War. Coal mining in these areas began in earnest in the 1870's with the expansion of the railroads. This copy is folded into plain dark brown cloth covers 15x10, without the Colton imprint found in our other copy. Full color by county.
