Note
"This is a real estate map of Winnetka, Illinois published originally in 1911 by the surveying and civil engineering firm of Windes & Marsh. It shows individual plots, additions and subdivisions of the city, with settlement concentrated along the shores of Lake Michigan and the route of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. At the time of publication, areas further inland were largely marshes and wetlands. However, ongoing infrastructure improvements in the early 1920’s allowed for effective reclamation of the land, which is captured in the manuscript annotations within the image. One example is a quick green scribble across several acres with the note, “Winnetka Golf Course,” reflecting the expansion to 18 holes in 1918. Other marks reference real estate prices, which appear to have varied between $3,500 and $5,000 an acre around 1924." (Curtis Wright, 2020)

"Legally binding survey of a highly desirable area in Lake Bluff, Illinois. It appears as if this map was purpose made for a 1911 real estate transaction in which four separate participants acquired 9 different plots of land in a subdivision along Chicago’s North Shore. Called “Ferry Field and Ferry Woods,” the area shown comprises less than half a square mile along the shores of Lake Michigan, just north of Lake Forest, Illinois. Though the data within the image is relatively sparse, extensive notarized text in the outer margins provides additional context on the map’s contents. A detailed overview of the survey process is given by the cartographer, Emil Rudolph. Other paragraphs reference the participation of real estate law firms, statements from the landowners, and official documentation of approval by the Chicago Title and Trust Company, as well as the board of trustees of Lake Bluff." "This early 20th century real estate map shows the village of Highland Park, Illinois nestled between the border with Cook County in the south and the Fort Sheridan Military Reservation in the north. Several paste-downs containing updated property information have been added throughout the image, reflecting the map’s practical application and use. In other areas, colored pencil has been applied to highlight particular lots, including the Bob O’Link Golf Course (established 1916) and Northmoor Country Club (established 1918).

"Detailed multi-purpose plan of an area in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin along the shores of Lake Michigan. Incredibly detailed map of northeast Illinois and southeast Wisconsin from Winnetka to Kenosha. Most parcels of land are individually labeled according to the business or property owners, making this sheet useful for real estate, insurance, marketing, and promotional purposes. Prominent industries within Kenosha are identified in separate legend, while text boxes highlight major businesses in Waukegan. Transportation routes, including the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad, are also noted. An inset map at the top of the sheet shows the area served by the railway from Michigan City to Milwaukee.
