Note
Unlike 1849 ed., this shows California gold region named and shown in yellow. It also adds basin and range topography in Nevada including Carson and Walker lakes, and the Humboldt River (although in a manner different from the late 1850 and subsequent additions -- they probably drew the topographical changes in quickly, and then corrected them in later editions). Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type; all areas shown in full color. Shows Indian tribes and includes descriptive notes. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington.

If practicable, from two to three numbers will be issued every month ... Note
Fourth part of the nine original parts of four colored maps each, in illustrated printed wrappers, of Morse's North American Atlas. Each part is dated 1845, so we assume they were all issued in that year, one or two a month. The "Plan of Publication" on the front wrapper of each part calls for ten numbers, but only nine were issued. The wraps are decorated with a palm tree, fir tree, bear, giraffe, and four seals for each of the continents. The cheap price of the product is stressed: "Each number will contain four coloured Maps, the price of which will be twenty five cents, being about one fourth the cost of copper plate Maps of similar size." After publication of the parts, Morse also issued the complete atlas bound (see our #2301). This nine part issue is to be distinguished from the earlier three part issue of 32 uncolored maps as supplements to the New York Observer (see our #4180). This copy with the signature and ms index of Robert Rantoul of Beverly, Massachusetts, noted lawyer and reformer. Printed full color. This copy is folded into green cloth covered boards which slips into a quarter leather green cloth covered folio box titled "Morse's North American Atlas - 9 Original Parts - New York, 1845" in gold along the spine.

A color litho view of the Big Trees, with eight keyed (A-H) descriptions of the trees. The color lithography is very well done. Presumably, this was a hand out to subscribers of the newspaper, and thus ephemeral in its survival. Currey & Kruska call it "A fanciful engraving of the Calaveras Grove..." The date is estimated by them. Not in Peters' "California On Stone."

This is a fine example of Rand McNally's better work at the turn of the century - the main map of California and Nevada is clearly executed in printed color, with three inset maps of the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Congressional Districts are shown in California, railroads, steamship lines, and the map is bordered by two physical maps of Nevada and California, as well as photographic views of the capitals, scenery, ships, etc. The verso has a complete town index with population. First edition, second state. Shows mineral deposits by color. Lineal descendent of the 1869 larger map of California and Nevada by Holt, Gibbes, and others. Also shows 10, 20 and 30 mile railroad grants. This is not the first state of the first edition - that has 11 land districts instead of the 14 found on this copy (see our #5154). The "unexplored" area in the Northeastern corner of California has been removed with much topographical detail changed from the first state. Eureka County is added in Nevada. The change of the Land Districts from eleven to fourteen includes a radical change in boundaries, some names changed, and numbering changed, indicating a major restructuring of the General Land Office administration in 1873. Map is folded into red cloth covers 16x10 with "Holt's Map Of California And Nevada." in gilt.

Note
This is a composite wall map incorporating the famous 1849 Ord Survey (Robinson's first Los Angeles map) and the Hancock and Hansen survey maps of 1853 and 1859. This is the first appearance of the manuscript Ord Survey as a printed map and is therefore of considerable importance. Bancroft and Thayer were real estate brokers active in the 1870's; Robinson dates the map as circa 1875 (the map is undated) based on their activities and the fact that the map "was a popular wall decoration for real estates offices in the 1870's and '80's." The Ord Survey is in the middle of the map with the Hancock and Hansen surveys surrounding it. The Ord Survey shows the original pueblo buildings, the farms around them, a small group of lots, water courses and hills. In contrast, the later Hancock and Hansen Surveys divide the lands outside the original town center into much larger rectangular lots of equal size, imposing a grid pattern on the earlier meandering lots that is both visually striking and a portent of the phenomenal growth of settlement to come. Separately, we acquired the covers for the pocket map version (without the pocket map) in which someone wrote in a contemporary hand "This cover contained the copy of the 1st map of the City of Los Angeles made in 1849 by Lt. Ord and is now framed and hanging in my office. I paid $5.00 for it." Covers are dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Published By Bancroft & Thayer, Real Estate Brokers, 21 Spring Street, And W.H.J. Brooks, Searcher of Records, Los Angeles, Cal." stamped in gilt.

The title of the map on the cover calls it "revised and enlarged" which means larger than the 1869 issue of the map (see our #4106) that showed the San Francisco Bay area and the country west to Sacramento, north to southern Lake County and south to Santa Cruz. This 1871 map extends west to Virginia City in Nevada, north to Fort Bragg and south to Santa Cruz, adding Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Central Pacific Railroad completed over Donner Pass, and a large part of the Central Valley. At a scale of 12 miles to one inch, this map is twice the scale of the Bancroft/Knight Map of the Pacific States and the various spin off maps from it, thus showing more detail. Not listed by Vogdes or Wheat or in any references. Full color by county, map is folded into tan and red card board covers 16.5x11 printed with title "Bancroft's New Map Of Central California Revised And Enlarged. San Francisco: A.L. Note
Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt.
