Case Map
Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron, Kinneir, J. Macdonald
Full Title (Covers to) Map of Asia Minor Armenia and Koordistan Illustrative of the Marches of Alexander, Xenophon, Julian and Heraclius. By J. Macdonald Kinneir. Madras, May 1, 1816. London, Published 3rd Decr. 1817, by A. Arrowsmith, No 10 Soho Square, Hydrographer to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales.
List No 6705.001
Note John Macdonald Kinneir was a British explorer who traveled widely in Asia Minor and Persia. Arrowsmith issued this map of Asia Minor which shows the various marches of Alexander, Xenophon, Julian and Heraclius. The map was likely produced to accompany Kinneir's book "Journey Through Asia Minor, Armenia, and Koordistan in the Years 1813 and ..." (1818). The book is available here http://archive.org/stream/journeythrougha00kinngoog Kinneir and Arrowsmith also issued a large map of the Middle East titled "Map of the Countries lying between the Euphrates and Indus on the East and West, and the Oxus and Terek and Indian Ocean on the North and South" (see our 6914.000). The folded cover bears the signature of "Major Wyndham 67th Foot 1822" - likely the same Colonel Charles Wyndham who entered the army as Cornet in the 10th Light Dragoons, 1811. On the 20th December 1821 he was promoted to Major in the 67th Regiment of Foot. He served under Lord Wellington between 1812 and 1813 during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. Apparently Wyndham traveled to India as part of his duties and this map was used in his journeys.
