The first edition of one of the most important maps in the history of Argentina, being the earliest obtainable general cadastral map of the Buenos Aires region, depicting all the estancias (ranches), created when the agrarian development of the Pampas and related overseas trade led the rise of modern Argentina; created by Sir Woodbine Parish, the British Consul General in Buenos Aires who was one of the main architects of the country’s economic development and chroniclers of its history; published by the leading London cartographer John Arrowsmith. This exceedingly rare, large-format, separately issued map depicts the Province of Buenos Aires and holds the distinction of being one of the most important cartographic works in the history of Argentina. It is the first edition of Sir Woodbine Parish’s grand cadastral map of the region, published in 1836, when the agrarian development of the Pampas and related overseas trade was transforming Argentina from an obscure backwater into a modern nation occupying a key role in the global economy. Beautifully printed in London by John Arrowsmith, the map was for almost 30 yeas the authoritative record of one of the world’s hottest real estate markets, consulted by mega-investors and senior diplomats and politicians on both dies of the Atlantic. Despite it tremendous influence, the map is today an outstanding rarity. The map embraces all of what was known as the Province of Buenos Aires, the heartland of the Argentinian Confederation, and extends from Montevideo, Uruguay, in the north, down to Bahía Blanca, in the south. Although traditionally a unified entity, the Province had since 1880 been divided into the Federal District of Buenos Aires, while the surrounding area remains the province. Drawn upon an impressively accurate topographic template, the map is the earliest obtainable printed map to precisely outline and label all of the province’s major estancias (ranches or estates) that cover the fertile plans of the Pampas to the south of the city of Buenos Aires, and which were the lifeblood of Argentina’s economic rise. In Arrowsmith’s clean and elegant style, the map outlines hundreds of cadastral lots, marking their owners’ names and their acreages. All towns, villages, and rural parish churches are labelled, while all major roads are delineated. All topographic features, including hills, rivers, lakes, or swamps are expressed, while the coasts are carefully charted, based upon the latest surveys. The map is a foundational work showcasing the settlements of landowners who built the Pampas into an agrarian powerhouse, indeed many of the estancias bear the names of great families that are still around today. While some of the estates remain, others have since been consumed by the urban sprawl of greater Buenos Aires. The map features a wealth of information for anyone who has an interest in Argentinian history. During the 1830s, the Province of Buenos Aires occupied an outsized role in the economy and politics of the Argentinian Confederation, home not only to the national capital, but 200,000 of the country’s 675,00 residents, and the majority of its economic capacity. The province (and Argentina as whole) was experiencing a protracted period of hyper-rapid economic expansion, driven by the development of the Pampas into a high-yield agricultural zone, producing goods for export to Europe to feed the Industrial Revolution. In particular, Argentina formed a special trading relationship with Britain that would become the cornerstone of its economic development and the source of a massive influx of investment. The Province of Buenos Aires’ wealth lay in its rural estates that produced the beef and grains that fuelled overseas trade. To realize the Pampas’ massive economic potential the existing estancias would have to be made more efficient and productive, while new estates would have be carved out of the wilderness, a process which fuelled one of the world’s hottest real estate booms, attracting investors from all across Europe and Latin America. To support the estates and bring produce to market, infrastructure would have to be improved. All this required the province and its cadastral divisions to be mapped to high scientific standard and for this purpose the provincial authorities created the Departamento Topográfico in 1824. The Departamento’s ultimate goal was to produce an authoritative map of all the province’s great estancias, the ‘Registro gràfico’, that would be continually updated, and could serve as the blueprint for civilian administration and the management of the real estate market. The hyper-development of the Pampas and the creation of the Registro gràfico received the ardent support of Brigadier General Juan Manual de Rosas (1793 - 1877), who served as the Governor of Buenos Aires Province from 1829 to 1852. A brilliant military leader and highly efficient administrator, Rosas was also a right-wing tyrant who established himself as the de facto dictator of all Argentina. He did, however, bring a about a level of stability and an ethic of organization that fostered the growth of the economy and permitted the advanced mapping of the province. Sir Woodbine Parish (1796 - 1882), who served as the British Consul in Buenos Aires from 1823 to 1832, was the architect of the all-important Anglo-Argentine economic relationship. A man of great intellectual curiosity, he was also one of the era’s most important authorities on Argentina’s geography, history and natural wonders. Born into a wealthy aristocratic family from Norfolk, Parish was educated at Eton. He served as the secretary to Lord Castlereagh, the British Foreign Minister, whereupon he played a major role in drafting the Treaty of Paris (1815) that ended the Napoleonic Wars. In Buenos Aires, he was responsible for negotiating the 1825 Anglo-Argentine Trade Treaty that jump-started Argentina’s economy. He subsequently formed a close bond with Rosas, becoming intimately involved in the administration of the country’s economy and the development of the Pampas. He took special interest in the Departamento Topográfico’s operations, making copies of their surveys and identifying new areas for development. Parish, with his friend Joseph Barclay Pentland, mapped parts of the Bolivian Andes and collected geological and animal specimens from all across Argentina. He later famously wrote Buenos Ayres and the Provinces of the Rio de la Plata (London, 1839), which is considered to be one of the seminal works on the history, politics, geography, geology and fauna of Argentina during the era. Parish also served as the Vice President of the Royal Geographical Society and was a correspondent of Charles Darwin. While Parish was impressed by the quality of the manuscript and published versions of the Registro gràfico that were created in Buenos Aires, copies of these maps were simply impossible to come by in Europe. He realized that the leading politicians, noblemen, bankers and industrialists who were pursuing vast fortunes in the Buenos Aires Province desperately needed a professionally produced and attractive version of the Registro gràfico that they could use a strategic tool. Parish painstaking copied the data from the 1830 and 1833 Registro gràfico maps onto a more accurate geographic template; on his map he described his sources as being: “La topografía de esta Carta ha sido tomada de los trabajos del Departamento Topográfico de Buenos Aires, y la configuración de las costas del Mar se ha arreglado a los últimos reconocimientos del capit.n Fitz Roy de la Marina inglesa”. This refers to the fact that he used information from the Departamento Topográfico for the cadastral information, while the coastlines were based on the fresh scientific surveys made by the Royal Navy’s Captain Robert FitzRoy, who charted the area in 1832 while accompanying Charles Darwin aboard the HMS Beagle. Parish gave his finished manuscript to John Arrowsmth (1790 - 1873), one of the world’s leading cartographic publishers, and the successor to business of his legendary uncle Aaron Arrowsmith. The Arrowsmith firm had long experience with the mapping of Latin America, and Arrowsmith ensured that the printed map was elegantly and crisply engraved, providing a level of clarity that was a considerable improvement upon its antecedents. The (present) first edition of the map was issued in January 1836, and was dedicated by Parish to General Rosas. Parish brilliantly succeeded in his design, as his map was soon regarded the authoritative cartographic record of the real estate system in Buenos Aires Province consulted by the international stakeholders in Argentina’s economic rise. It far eclipsed the less refined and practically unobtainable maps created in Buenos Aires. The Parish-Arrowsmith map was updated and reissued twice, in 1840 and 1852, and it remained the definitive map of province’s cadastral system until the 1860s, when an updated version of the Registro gràfico was published in Buenos Aires to a high technical standard, in print runs sufficient to satisfy international demand. Parish’s map is one of the most content-rich historical documents from Argentina’s early independence era. Today it is frequently consulted and cited by academics in all manner of disciplines, from history, geography, economics, agronomy and environmental sciences, although being able to handle one of the original maps remains a rare privilege. This map, then, can be seen as the official Brazilian record of a war that they ultimately won. It was printed by the Lithography Office of the Military Archive. As the title explains, it was based on new information gathered by the Brazilian Army during the war and the most up-to-date foreign maps available in the Military Archive’s collection. The map shows a detailed rendering of the topography of the region. Rivers, lakes, roads, and settlements, particularly Jesuit missions, are carefully labeled. Dotted lines show the various marches undertaken by armies during the war, but perhaps the most distinct features of the map are the tiny crossed swords that dot the terrain. These swords, and their corresponding numbers, mark the battle sites where Paraguayans clashed with allied forces in the War of the Triple Alliance. These battles are listed chronologically in a legend to the left, just below the title. They date from between April 10, 1866 and March 1, 1870. The War of the Triple Alliance The War of the Triple Alliance, also known as the Paraguayan War or, in Paraguay, the Great War, was the bloodiest inter-state conflict ever to take place in Latin America. While estimates vary and cause considerable contention, it is thought that 60%, and possibly more, of Paraguay’s population was wiped out. The hundreds of thousands of men who lived in Paraguay prior to the war were reduced to only 28,000, as much as a 90% loss. Border disputes in the region were nothing new by the 1860s. Spain and Portugal had fought over the precise location of the frontier between their empires since the fifteenth century. After the Latin American states gained their independence in the early nineteenth century, the new nations inherited the disputes that concentrated in the Rio de la Plata basin, which is where Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina all converge. A catalyst for the War of the Triple Alliance was Brazil’s interference in a Uruguayan civil war in 1864. Emperor Pedro II wanted to ensure that his preferred Colorado Party prevailed; with Brazilian aid they did and the Colorados continued to rule Uruguayan politics uninterrupted until the 1950s. Paraguay’s leader, Francisco Solano López, had supported the other contender, the Blanco Party, and saw Brazil’s interference as a dangerous precedent that undermined Paraguayan sovereignty and the regional balance of power. López’s father, Carlos Antonio López, had begun Paraguay’s accelerated industrialization in the decades prior to the war. Paraguay had one of the first railways in South America and revenue came from a shipyard and a large foundry. At the time, the only way for freight and people to travel south from Brazil was to navigate the Paraguay River, further enhancing the nation’s importance. In response to the Brazilian aggression in Uruguay, López threatened to unleash his army, which, thanks to conscription, included every man of fighting age in Paraguay. When Pedro II did not back down, López attacked Mato Grosso, to the north of the area shown on this map. On May 1, 1865, the president of Argentina, Bartolomé Mitre, signed an alliance consisting of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, which was now controlled by the Colorados. These three combatants formed the eponymous Triple Alliance. Although the alliance outnumbered Paraguay’s population 25 to 1, López had amassed a powerful, if antiquely provisioned, army. In 1865, López’s forces made early gains. They advanced in both Uruguay and Brazil, but soon had to withdraw due to logistical problems and the amassing of the Allied Army. In June of that year, the Brazilian Navy defeated the Paraguayans at Riachuelo, opening the way for a blockade of Paraguay’s rivers. The landlocked country was now cut off from the outside world. López and the Paraguayan army did not surrender, however. Instead, they entrenched themselves and expanded the draft to include all men, leaving few to work the fields and causing many to starve. It is during this period, 1866-70, that the battles listed on this map took place. Farther south, in 1868, the allied troops under the Brazilian marquês de Caxias, took the crucial fortifications at Humaitá; this opened the way to the capital, Asunción. In December of 1868, at the Battle of Lomas Valentinas near Asunción, the balance of the Paraguayan army was defeated. This is battle 34 listed in the legend to the left. López fled north, where he would be killed at the Battle of Cerro Cará on March 1, 1870. This is the final battle included on the map, number 50. Paraguay was utterly devastated by the war—politically, economically, and demographically. The country lost territory to Brazil and Argentina. The allies continued to occupy the country until 1876 and levied a large indemnity on the nation (which was never paid). Even today, Paraguayan politics and economics refer to and are impacted by the outcome of the War of the Triple Alliance. Rarity This map is extremely rare. OCLC locates only the example in the National Library of Spain. We also note a copy referenced in Philips (Checklist of Large Scale Maps Published by Foreign Governments, p. 55 Library of Congress, 1904). Provenance The map was originally acquired by the French Embassy at the Palais Beauvryé in Berlin, as noted by the elaborate contemporary manuscript note on the verso (Department des Affaires Etrangeres de l'Empir Germanique a Berlin). Thereafter, several stamps reflect ownership by German archives. Quite likely, the map was in the French Foreign Office during the time Count Vincent Benedetti (1817-1900) was serving as French Ambassador to Prussia. The map probably remained there until the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. The collection from which the map came was likely resident in East Germany after World War II." (Ruderman)

The Malaspina Expedition (1789–1794) was a five-year maritime scientific exploration commanded by Alessandro Malaspina and José de Bustamante y Guerra The expedition was funded by the Spanish government and originally pursued strictly scientific goals, in the same fashion as the voyages of James Cook and Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse. Some of the leading scientists at the time collected an impressive amount of scientific data that even surpassed what was collected during Cook's expedition, but due to Malaspina's involvement in a conspiracy to overthrow the government, he was jailed shortly upon return. Most of the expedition's reports and collections were put away unpublished, and didn't see the light until the late 19th century. The original chart recorded Malapsina's observations along both coasts of the Rio de la Plata in 1789. Malaspina proceeded as far north as the Rio Paraña, fixing precise points based upon 150 astronomical observations. The title of the original chart is: Carta esférica del Río de la Plata desde su desde embocadura hasta Buenos Aires [Material cartográfico] / levantada de Orden del Rey en 1789 y rectificada en 1794 por varios oficiales de su R[ea]l Armada, Presentada a S.M. por mano del Excmo. Sr. D. Juan de Langara Secretario de Estado y del Despacho Universal de Marina ; Fernando Selma la grabó ; Felipe Bauzá la delineó Andres Oyarvide was born in Guipuzcoa in the Basque region of Spain in 1750, and would rise to the title of Piloto-Major in the Royal Spanish Armada, before his death at sea in 1806. Following the Spanish War with Portugal, Oyarvide was part of the first expedition to survey and determine the line of demarcation of the Limits of the Treaty of San Ildefonso, from the Amazon to the Rio de La Plata. Oyarvide was assigned the task of surveying the Rio de la Plata and parts further north, which lasted from 1783 to 1798, when he sailed from Montevideo to Sain in January 1798. The following year, Oyarvide returned to the region and conducted and given instructions by Governor Bustamonte to conduct a detailed survey. From 1800 to 1803, Oyarvide conducted the survey which would radically rework and improve the original Malaspina work." Ruderman.

"Rare map of Rio Plata and the northern regions, produced during the British Invasion of the Rio de la Plata. The invasion was an attempt by the British to open a new theatre against the Spanish and French alliance by attacking Spanish interests in South America. To this end, a force was sent to gain control of the River Plate by conquering the dominant city of Buenos Aires. On June 27, 1806, a British force of some 1,500 men under the command of Colonel William Carr Beresford occupied the city. They held control for about six weeks, before surrendering on the 14th August to a militia consisting of 550 veterans and 400 soldiers, led by Santiago de Liniers y Bremond, a French nobleman and mercenary in the service of Spain. A second, better-resourced, invasion followed in 1807, when a force of 10,000 men under the command of Lieutenant-General John Whitelock, attacked Buenos Aires on the 1st July. The British were, however, ill-prepared for urban combat and the locals eventually overwhelmed them. The Britsh had lost substantial numbers, and General Whitelock signed an armistice with de Liniers on the 12th August and left for home. These two resounding victories, which were achieved with little help from her colonial master Spain, have led many to site them as important mile stones along the road to Argentine Independence." First edition. The "Historical Extracts" are short bits of text printed on the maps giving relevant geographical information. A revised edition was published in London in 1792. In 1759, another edition was published adding separate geographical descriptions and correcting some of the maps (see our copy). The Philadelphia 1798 edition by Mathew Carey incorporates the 1759 edition text word for word (excepting the maps of United States which Carey omits in favor of his pocket atlas of the U.S.). Gibson and Bowen made the four sheet map of North America (Stevens 49), and Gibson made the four sheet map of America (Stevens 3).
