Shows entire Florida Peninsula. See Stephenson page 15 for a general discussion of Bachmann's civil war views. In addition to the six panoramas of the seat of war, Bachmann did a view of Richmond (Stephenson 621, illustrated p271), and of the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers (Stephenson 1.5) - which may be similar to the Kentucky - Tennessee Seat of War view, at least in terms of vantage point. Full color. Bound in black leather covers 38x30 with "Florida & Part Of Georgia & Alabama. G.G.W." stamped in gold.

Note
Important U.S. Railroad map; civil war references. Goldthwait did an early map of the Mississippi Valley in 1833 (see Karrow index), engraved for Johnson (large N.A. 1859) and Colton (County Map of N.A. 1864) and produced several beautiful railroad maps. Colton put out a later edition of this map (see Phillips 909). This map is extraordinary for its graphic clarity and elegance. Two inset maps show railroad routes in New England and the Mid West. The west is largely empty except for California where many towns are listed along with topographical features. Many lists of statistics are provided (showing population growth) as well as a list of the seceding southern states with dates of secession. Railroad routes are shown as single and double track, including the width of the gauge. Full color map, folded into textured brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Goldthwait's Map Of The United States & Canada" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
2nd edition published with additions, by Magnus. Stevenson lists a second issue by Bachmann (showing smoke over the Manassas battlefield) but not this second edition by Magnus. Many towns and battlefields have been added, especially around Richmond, Petersburg, and Fredericksburg. The lithographic printing is not as good as the Bachmann edition and the color yellow which Bachmann used effectively to show topography is not employed to much advantage here. Relief shown by shadings and pictorially. Showing battlefields, military fortifications and battleships.

Full and outline color map. Shows Colorado, Nevada, and Dakota. Streeter: "One of the first to show the three new territories, Colorado...and Dakota and Nevada..." Has lists of ports of entry and military posts in the margins of the map, and shows the free states, seceding states, border states, old territories and new territories by color. A most interesting early civil war map, probably issued as a broadside. See also our pocket map issue. Includes state capitals and principal towns, drainage, geographic coordinates, and names and boundaries of the states and territories.

Map Of The Seat Of War In Virginia. Positions of the Rebel Forces, Batteries, Intrenchments and Encampments in Virginia. The Fortifications for the Protection of Richmond.
List No

Note
Folded broadside inserted in Newspaper, printed without color. Probably a few weeks later than the Stephenson 451.3 (June 17, 1861) because some of the troop counts are increased (Richmond). The engraver credit for Waters & Son is not present, and the map appears to be reengraved. The map has the feel of an "hot off the press" look at the battlefields of the war. Shows military fortifications, roads and railroads. Relief shown by hachures.

1st issued 1861. Last issue 1864. With an inset "Plan of the Sea Coast From Virginia to Florida." This map is a companion map to Colton's Topographical Map of the Seat of War in Virginia, Maryland, &c. (see our copy), but on a larger scale (8 miles to an inch vs. 12 miles). It is both highly detailed (railroads, physical features, towns, counties, etc.) and highly decorative (many ships illustrated off the coasts). Map has outline color by state and water painted in blue; inset has full color by state.

1st ed. "Military Map and Gazetteer of the Southern States" on verso. Large scale full color map showing only the southern states, with counties, railroads and cities shown. This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. See our copy of Lloyd's advertisement for this map issued earlier in the year.

Note
Separate issue of Johnston's National Atlas Map of the United States. Rare variant issue of this map: it has an inset of Charleston Vicinity and Harbor that does not appear on any other issues of the maps, and most importantly, the southern slave states and northern free states are color coded (solid red for slave and outline red for free). Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W."

Note
This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map.
