List No 2657.001
Note Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W.", the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color.

Note Shows entire Florida Peninsula. See Stephenson page 15 for a general discussion of Bachmann's civil war views. In addition to the six panoramas of the seat of war, Bachmann did a view of Richmond (Stephenson 621, illustrated p271), and of the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers (Stephenson 1.5) - which may be similar to the Kentucky - Tennessee Seat of War view, at least in terms of vantage point. Full color. Bound in black leather covers 38x30 with "Florida & Part Of Georgia & Alabama. G.G.W." stamped in gold.

(inset) Of The Railroads Of New England And Eastern N . York by J.H. Goldthwait.
List No 2762.001
Note Important U.S. Railroad map, civil war references. Goldthwait did an early map of the Mississippi Valley in 1833 (see Karrow index), engraved for Johnson (large N.A. 1859) and Colton (County Map of N.A. 1864) and produced several beautiful railroad maps. Colton put out a later edition of this map (see Phillips 909). This map is extraordinary for its graphic clarity and elegance. Two inset maps show railroad routes in New England and the Mid West. The west is largely empty except for California where many towns are listed along with topographical features. Many lists of statistics are provided (showing population growth) as well as a list of the seceding southern states with dates of secession. Railroad routes are shown as single and double track, including the width of the gauge. Full color map, folded into textured brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Goldthwait's Map Of The United States & Canada" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

List No 2817.000
Note 2nd edition published with additions, by Magnus. Stevenson lists a second issue by Bachmann (showing smoke over the Manassas battlefield) but not this second edition by Magnus. Many towns and battlefields have been added, especially around Richmond, Petersburg, and Fredericksburg. The lithographic printing is not as good as the Bachmann edition and the color yellow which Bachmann used effectively to show topography is not employed to much advantage here. Relief shown by shadings and pictorially. Showing battlefields, military fortifications and battleships.

Full Title Map Of The Seat Of War In Virginia. Positions of the Rebel Forces, Batteries, Intrenchments and Encampments in Virginia. The Fortifications for the Protection of Richmond.
List No 2845.000
Note Folded broadside inserted in Newspaper, printed without color. Probably a few weeks later than the Stephenson 451.3 (June 17, 1861) because some of the troop counts are increased (Richmond). The engraver credit for Waters & Son is not present, and the map appears to be reengraved. The map has the feel of an "hot off the press" look at the battlefields of the war. Shows military fortifications, roads and railroads. Relief shown by hachures.

On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. List No 3236.001
Note Separate issue of Johnston's National Atlas Map of the United States. Rare variant issue of this map: it has an inset of Charleston Vicinity and Harbor that does not appear on any other issues of the maps, and most importantly, the southern slave states and northern free states are color coded (solid red for slave and outline red for free). Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W."

There is an ad for "Colton's...Complete Series of War Maps" on the verso of the cover and a pasted down list of Union and Confederate Political and Military leaders on the verso of the map. The map was sold in London by Sampson Low, Son & Co., by arrangement with Colton. All the prices quoted for Colton's maps on the paste down are in pounds. There was great demand in England for maps of the American Civil War, and Colton exploited it by providing his maps to English map sellers. W.H. has an identical copy of this map sold by Crutchly. Stanford also sold this map under his imprint. Full color. Dissected into 32 sections.
