Untitled folding detailed transportation map of Russia in Europe, dissected into 32 segments 23.5x13.5, and backed with linen. Including the mileage between town, also features the early stages of Russia’s railway system. With 6 Inset plans of St. Petersburg; Moscow; Riga, today in Latvia; Warsaw, today in Poland; Nizhniy Novgorod and map of Russia in Asia. The inset map depicts all of Asian Russia, from the Urals to Kamchatka, and delineates the main transcontinental road system which extended from Yekaterinburg, on the eastern slope of the Urals, all the way across to Okhotsk, on the Pacific, and then beyond to Kamchatka, showing precise mileage between stations along the transcontinental route throughout. Published by the St. Petersburg bookseller J.A. Jungmeister. While the map’s title is missing, Jungmeister’s name appears below the blank space where the title was intended to have been engraved, an imprint appears, in the upper left margin, noting that the map was printed in St. Petersburg on March 19, 1854.The map is one of the earliest maps to delineate all of the Russian Empire’s major roads in exacting detail, and as the legend explains on the right, the roads are classified into three categories: major post roads (highways); regional roads; and rural (dirt) roads. The map gives the precise mileage between the towns along each road, a detail very seldom seen on Russian road maps of the period. The coverage of roads, with mileage, even extends a ways into neighboring countries, also showing first major railway lines. Map depicts all of European Russia, extends onto Scandinavia, parts of Central Europe, Romania and the Caucuses. Showing oblasts (provinces), cities and towns. Map appears to be an unfinished proof state of an intended final publication. Most notably, a great blank space remains in the far upper left corner where the title was intended to have been placed.

One of the Earliest Telegraph Maps of Europe Extremely rare early map illustrating the progress of providing telegraph lines throughout Europe. This may be the earliest thematic map which focuses solely on telegraph lines across all of Europe. The map illustrates the telegraph lines then in operation, those under construction and the Telegraph Directorates and Bureaus. Among the more noteworthy connections are the cable across the English Channel, the Cable extending to Corsica and the proposed cable from Sardinia to North Africa. History of the Telegraph The first working telegraph was built by the English inventor Francis Ronalds in 1816 and used static electricity. Offering his invention to the Admiralty in July 1816, it was rejected as "wholly unnecessary". The telegraph invented by Baron Schilling von Canstatt in 1832 had a transmitting device which consisted of a keyboard with 16 black-and-white keys. Pavel Schilling subsequently improved its apparatus. The first commercial electrical telegraph was the Cooke and Wheatstone system. A demonstration four-needle system was installed on the Euston to Camden Town section of Robert Stephenson's London and Birmingham Railway in 1837 for signaling rope-hauling of locomotives. It was rejected in favor of pneumatic whistles. Cooke and Wheatstone had their first commercial success with a system installed on the Great Western Railway over the 13 miles from Paddington station to West Drayton in 1838. The Electric Telegraph Company, the world's first public telegraphy company was formed in 1845 by financier John Lewis Ricardo and Cooke. In 1851, a conference in Vienna of countries in the German-Austrian Telegraph Union adopted the Morse telegraph as the system for international communications. The code adopted was considerably modified from the original Morse code, and was based on a code used on Hamburg railways (Gerke, 1848). A common code was a necessary step to allow direct telegraph connection between countries. With different codes, additional operators were required to translate and retransmit the message. As well as the rapid expansion of the use of the telegraphs along the railways, they soon spread into the field of mass communication with the instruments being installed in post offices. Telegraph networks were expensive to build, but financing was readily available, especially from London bankers. By 1852, National systems were in operation in major countries The Bibliotheque National de France holds an 1855 edition, which shows a number of new telegraph lines, most notably one across the Black Sea and one from Moscow to Odessa. Wood block print, pictorial map of the coast defense of Tokyo Bay. Kawaraban Broadside Map depicting arrival of Perry's "Black Ships," describing the arrival of the American Commodore Matthew Perry to Edo Bay (Tokyo Bay) in 1854 (Kaei 6), after his earlier brief visit in 1853. The defensive ships identified by the warlord in charge and his armorial crest are around the bay to intimidate the invaders. Includes notes describing the troops and list of names of Samurais in charge of defense of Tokyo Bay. Includes an illustration in the upper right depicting an American soldier. Perry's ships were the first major western intrusion into Japan. “Perry, on behalf of the U.S. government, forced Japan to enter into trade with the United States and demanded a treaty permitting trade and the opening of Japanese ports to U.S. merchant ships. This was the era when all Western powers were seeking to open new markets for their manufactured goods abroad, as well as new countries to supply raw materials for industry. It was clear that Commodore Perry could impose his demands by force. The Japanese had no navy with which to defend themselves, and thus they had to agree to the demands… Upon seeing Perry's fleet sailing into their harbor, the Japanese called them the "black ships of evil mien (appearance)." Many leaders wanted the foreigners expelled from the country, but in 1854 a treaty was signed between the United States and Japan which allowed trade at two ports. In 1858 another treaty was signed which opened more ports and designated cities in which foreigners could reside. The trade brought much foreign currency into Japan disrupting the Japanese monetary system. Because the ruling shogun seemed unable to do anything about the problems brought by the foreign trade, some samurai leaders began to demand a change in leadership. The weakness of the Tokugawa shogunate before the Western demand for trade, and the disruption this trade brought, eventually led to the downfall of the Shogunate and the creation of a new centralized government with the emperor as its symbolic head.” Source: Asia for Educators, Columbia University.

Large circular planisphere on 6 sheets, 85x107 or smaller. Title from sheet 5. Reproduced and printed for the first time at the size of the original with all the legends and notations by Viscount of Santarém in 1854. The original 1450 map was fully described and reproduced in manuscript for the first time by William Frazer in 1804, Manuscript on vellum, BL Add. MS 1126. This was deposited at the British Museum in 1807 by William Vincent, dean of Westminster. Vincent wrote a short account of this process in 1807 in his "The Commerce and Navigation of the Ancients in the Indian Ocean," 2 vols. London: Cadell and Davies, 1807, in an appendix = 2:661–79. Matthew Edney states "Santarém took his facsimile from a tracing of Frazer’s manuscript at the BM, as indicated by the placement of Eden in the lower-right corner, rather than in the lower-left where it actually sits: see: Cattaneo, Angelo. “L’Atlas del visconte de Santarém: Una storia culturale europa tra erudizione orientalismo e colonialismo,” in “A história da cartografia na obra do 2.º visconde de Santarém. Exposição cartobibliográfica, 24 de Novembro de 2006 a 10 de Fevereiro de 2007”, edited by João Carlos García, and Maria Joaquina Feijoo, 17–49. Lisbon: Biblioteca Nacional, 2006." Fra Mauro's map was also reproduced by Placido Zurla in II Mappamondo di Fra Mauro Camaldolese, 1818 in Venice ( see our copy), and later again by Santarem in his facsimile Atlas of 1849, "Atlas de Vicomte de Santarem," see lower left sheet 5. Unusual for medieval European maps, it is oriented with South at the top (Indian Ocean, top left; Mediterranean, right center) and so meticulously drawn and full of detail and legends that it has been described as a “medieval cosmography of no small extent, a conspectus of 15th century geographical knowledge cast in medieval form.” The coasts are drawn in a style recalling that of nautical charts. Includes 4 insets at each corner, numerous note boxes on the map and explanatory text at the margins. Shows place names, rivers, mountains, lakes, etc. Landmarks shown pictorially. Text and place names in Italian, publication information in French. Relief shown pictorially.

This atlas was published in many compilations over a thirty year period. It was indeed an atlas of "choice" of the publisher and as such consists of a wide variety of maps that Andriveau-Goujon favored to include at the time. It consists of ancient and modern geographical maps, engraved and hand colored. Date estimated; based on newest map sheet in atlas, 1854.

First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska; also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state; the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state; Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second; Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first; Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover.
