Note
A series of six oil color prints, celestial charts engraved in tones of blue, white, yellow, and green, intended to demonstrate that the earth is at the center of the universe, based on planetary charts drawn by Isaac Frost. They were printed by George Baxter, who employed his innovative oil color printing technique that permitted subtle gradations for a glowing effect and engraved by Chubb & Son, London. Isaac Frost was a scientist and prominent member of the the religious sect known as "Muggletonians" in the mid 19th Century, who was instrumental in the refinement of the Muggletonian's astronomical theory, as represented on these prints. Each sheet individually titled, they were originally published under the title "Two Systems of Astronomy", 1846 and were likely circulated only to members of the sect. George Baxter was a London printer who developed and patented an unusual method of printing using oil pigments. His works are rare, because although the graduations of color produced are quite beautiful, the process was too expensive to sustain commercial manufacture. Some plates includes text.

Note
Dissected in north and south sheets, each in 30 sections. This map is a reduction and reissue of Wyld's famous 1824 Map of North America (Stevens and Tree 63 - four editions from 1824 to 1856) - it does not have the top sheet showing the Arctic, it moves the title from the lower left to middle right (and changes title of course), and it updates some of the western geography, showing the Tule Lakes in California, Fremont's or South Pass, Fts Hall and Boise and the Oregon Trail. However, it keeps the outdated topography of the Great Basin and California used in the 1824 edition - the two large rivers running from the interior of the basin to the Pacific, and the mountain ranges running almost east to west instead of north to south in the basin. Nonetheless, it is a very beautiful map in the best of Wyld's cartographic style. Two insets in the lower right and left, of North America and Islands in the Pacific Ocean (both of which appear in the small General Atlas). Map comes from the family of Kit Carson's clerk. Has paste down catalogue. Wheat 658 (1849) is listed in our copy of Radford's Catalogue, 1975. Though smaller, it is likely derived from this map. With outline color. Sheets fold with marbled end sheets into original brown cloth slip case 25x15.5 with label reading "Canada Mexico &c. United States" (ms) and "James Wyld, Geographer To Her Majesty. Note
With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green; some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy).

Date thought to be 1846. 3rd Edition, second state. Aroostoock County is expanded in the north. York county in New Brunswick has a new Military road and the rivers around it are more detailed than 1844 edition. Rivers are added and lengthened in Canadian counties along the St. Lawrence. Inside Maine we can't find changes other than the change of the Aroostoock county line. The 1846 date is estimated based on the changes in the map. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county. Relief shown by hachures. Tracts (roads or trails) and railroads shown.

First edition. Has Carey and Hart borders. Ristow's second 1846 issue. The first issue by Mitchell alone, without Tanner's name on the title page. Tanner issued this atlas first in 1836 with engraved maps, then it was taken over by Carey and Hart in 1843 and converted by them to lithographic maps in 1845. In 1846 Mitchell took over the publishing of this atlas and continued until 1849, after which it was published until 1860 by Thomas, Cowperthwait and then Charles DeSilver. This atlas is important in American printing history in that it was the first American atlas to be converted from engraved map plates to lithographic map plates - greatly reducing the cost of production and thus making the book made widely affordable by the general public. The maps are in full color; atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Mitchell's Universal Atlas" stamped in gilt on front label.
