1st ed., 2nd state. Stokes: "This is one of the most beautiful nineteenth century plans or maps of Manhattan Island, and is full of interesting information, It is perhaps the last example of really artistic map-making, as applied to Manhattan Island." Ristow believes that Burr may have drawn this map based on similarities between it and the Burr New York City map that appeared in Burr's New York State Atlas of 1829. Accompanied by the "Summary History.." Stokes describes his copy of the 1st edition as not listing Madison Square and some other differences between the 1836 and 1841 editions which would lead one to conclude that this copy is slightly later than 1836 (it shows Madison Square which was established in 1837) - apparently an unrecorded 2nd state of the first edition. Without color or top and bottom rollers. |

Wilson's New American Thirteen Inch Terrestrial Globe, Exhibiting with the Greatest Possible Accuracy, The Positions of the Principal Known Places of the Earth, with the Tracks of Various Circumnavigators, Together with New Discoveries and Political Alterations Down to the present Period: 1836. By Cyrus Lancaster, Albany St. N.Y. S. Wood & Sons Agents N. York. |
| List No |
4992.000 |
| Note |
The second year of production of Wilson's Thirteen Inch Globe by Cyrus Lancaster. Compared to the last Wilson issue of 1834 (see our #4310) we cannot detect any changes in the geography. In fact, both the 1834 and the 1836 are out of date regarding the United States - Arkansas is shown in enlarged pre 1824 form and Northwestern Territory is shown where Michigan Territory should be. But then most of the early American globes did not keep current with the changes to political geography. With a four leg table stand. Total height from base to top is 18 inches. |

The non American maps may be partly derived from the Dower/Teesdale General Atlas of 1831 - see P3549 & P772. North America map has states in different colors and has the following differences from the 1843 Atlas copy: San Felipe de Austin (as opposed to San Felipe in the 1843), and Sioux and Wisconsin Dists (not in the 1843 edition). Wheat mistakenly uses a post 1836 issue as an illustration in Trans Miss and calls it 1836. The Mexico map has differences from 1843 issue: Houston appears in 1843 and not in 1836, and San Felipe de Austin in 1836 is San Felipe in 1843. The Michigan map changes substantially between the 1836, the 1842, and the 1843 editions, especially the shoreline. See notes to the (1838) edition which also has a title page dated 1836. Bound in half leather, marbled paper covered boards, with "Tanner's Universal Atlas. 1836." stamped in gilt along the spine. Full color. |
