First edition. This map is entirely a copy of Arrowsmith's Map of the United States (see our 1796 issue) except for certain parts (mentioned by Tardieu in his "Note" above the title) that Tardieu has altered and improved, based on other sources. A Plan of Washington, D.C. is also added. Later editions depart more radically from Arrowsmith and this actually becomes a better map in many respects (certainly more up to date regarding new States and Territories) than the Arrowsmith editions, although Arrowsmith remains better in the areas west of the Mississippi. G. Gibbs name on label- a famous scientist, see DAB. Map folds into a new brown cloth folding case 32x26 with "United States P.F. Tardieu 1802" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

| Note |
A beautiful, early map of Philadelphia in full period color. The scale is given at 75 Perches to 1 inch. The city is shown from the Delaware River to the Schuylkil River with the environs on the north and south. 24 lettered references and 28 numbered references to important places and buildings are below the title and 24 wards are keyed in Roman numbers above the title. Many of the country houses and farms around the city are named, including Penn, Dr. Wistar, and other notable early residents. Three inset views show City Hall, the State House, Court House, Library, and Bank of the United States. The tile is surrounded by a decorative cartouche. The quality of the engraving is superb. Ristow mentions an undated edition that was possibly issued in the year Varle made the surveys, 1796, but more likely in 1802. Wheat and Brun list a c.1794 State I that has one less numbered building reference, no Roman numbered ward references, and "R. Scott Sculp. Philadelphia." This was Varle's first map published in the United States. Until 1807, Varle was known as Peter C. Varle, after 1807 he is known as Charles P. Varle. |

1st edition. Maps by F. Shallus & W. Harrison. The second American road book, after Colles. The maps are better engraved than Colles, in a style closer to the English road books of John Cary (see our 1790 copy). Descriptive text precedes the maps, describing the routes and places of interest. Smither engraved one map, I. Draper, two. The rest by Harrison & Shallus. See "New Jersey Road Maps" by Howard Rice. A second edition appeared in 1804, same maps, text rewritten. Full leather covers with no title on cover or spine. |

The Spanish "Vancouver." Atlas volume only, first edition. Sometimes attributed to Dionisio Alcala Galiano. The title of the text volume is "Relacion del Viage Hecho por las Goletas Sutil y Mexicana en al ano 1792 para reconocer el estrecho de Fuca..." The last and very important voyage up the Pacific coast to be undertaken by Spain is detailed in the nine maps and eight plates of the atlas. Galiano and Cayetano Valdes led the expedition, arriving in the northwest at the same time as Vancouver. Although the maps were published four years after the Vancouver maps, Wagner considers them in many respects to be superior, and Humboldt used them in his Essai Politique sur le Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne. Wagner further states: "The general impression today...is that the English discoveries of Vancouver were published four years before those of the Spaniards. This...is a misapprehension... The principal reason, however, why the nomenclature and geography of Vancouver came to occupy the field was that his maps were extensively copied by the famous English cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith, and later by the English Admiralty." |
