Unusual index map that shows the rough shape and projection for each of the original 50 maps of the atlas. Stieler was one of the first to use this technique for a visual index instead of listing the maps in text only. Zero or first edition of Stieler Atlas published 1817-1833 in three versions. 1817-23 (version 0.a), 1823-31 (version 0.b), 1831-33 (version 0.c). Publication went through ten editions from 1816 to 1944. This version published in 2 parts then augmented with two further supplementary installments, through 1833. Most maps have the year of first edition. This edition compromises 90 sheets, dated 1816-1835, including composite index map, and extraordinarily detailed maps and supplements. Maps are copper-plate engravings, hand colored in outline, mounted on cloth backing. Bound in marble papered, half leather covers with no title on cover. Inset map on title page: Gotha und Umgebung 1823, gest. v. Edler. Gez. v. Bar. |

There are seven new maps not in earlier editions (mostly of South America), and an equal number of the more obscure European maps have been dropped, the remaining maps have not been updated from the 1804 first edition. The oceans are not delineated with dark lines as in the 1804 and 1805 editions. Starting with the 1805 edition, Morse acquired this atlas (originally published in 1804 to accompany the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Geography) for his Geography. Maps without color bound with paper-covered quarter leather boards. |

3rd edition. 1837 (state 4 Verner) of the British North America map. Most of the maps are dated 1832 and 1834. The maps of Brit. N.A., Upper and Lower Canada, are dated 1837, America is 1835, all others are earlier. This atlas is remarkable for its understated elegance and clarity. It is one of the first truly "modern" atlases of the nineteenth century. All maps have outline color except for the full color geological map of England and Wales. Covers are dark blue half blue leather cloth covered boards with "Arrowsmith's London Atlas. Incorporated Law Society 1832" embossed on the spine in gilt. |

This large one volume 1856 edition is scarcer than the two volume edition. Initially, Colton's atlas was published by subscription (see our subscribers salesman's book) and in parts, then in a two volume edition with the first volume (North and South America) issued in 1855 and the second volume (Europe, Asia, etc.)in 1856. This atlas was the first world atlas produced by Colton, after many years of issuing pocket maps, wall maps, guides, and maps for books. The atlas was one of the finest and most accurate of the period - it had a long publishing run, continuing for over thirty years (with the title changed to Colton's General Atlas after 1856). In this issue, the Texas map is single page, 2nd state. New Mexico and Utah 2nd state. Bound into quarter leather embossed brown cloth covered boards with "Colton's Atlas Of The World" and an illustration stamped in gold. The same title is stamped on the spine. Full color maps. |
