List No 0909.000
Note Shows the comparative heights of mountains in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, as well as the comparative heights of important places. A list of Authorities is given to the left of the title, and an Explanation shows how the system of numbering mountains and places works. A former owner has added "6225....White Mountains, N.H." to the table. This chart may be one of the earliest of its genre, it is not listed in Wolter's "Heights of Mountains..." (he lists the Thomson 1817 similar chart as the first of this type). The British Museum lists this Smith as the first chart of this kind. Interestingly, Smith's chart does not show the Himalayan Mountains, Thomson adds the Himalayan Mountains to his chart with a note about the recent publication of data on their heights. With black top and bottom sticks, and green silk edging. Full hand painted color.

Note 1st ed., 2nd state. Stokes: "This is one of the most beautiful nineteenth century plans or maps of Manhattan Island, and is full of interesting information, It is perhaps the last example of really artistic map-making, as applied to Manhattan Island." Ristow believes that Burr may have drawn this map based on similarities between it and the Burr New York City map that appeared in Burr's New York State Atlas of 1829. Accompanied by the "Summary History.." Stokes describes his copy of the 1st edition as not listing Madison Square and some other differences between the 1836 and 1841 editions which would lead one to conclude that this copy is slightly later than 1836 (it shows Madison Square which was established in 1837) - apparently an unrecorded 2nd state of the first edition. Without color or top and bottom rollers.

A.A. Humphreys) principally from a map compiled from the following authorities by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Topl Engrs...In the Office of Pacific Rail Road Surveys, War Department." The map referred to must be the 1855 edition (see our copy) of Warren's General Map for the Pacific Railroad Reports. The list of Authorities is almost identical to the list on that map. Also, the map details of the west used in Johnson's map follow the 1855 edition in scope. Karrow lists many issues of this map from 1857 to 1861, with the views varying in each issue, and with Colton taking over as publisher in 1860. See our late Colton edition of 1890 (our #5150). Wall Map
Authors Smith, J. Calvin, Smith, Robert P.
Full Title The New Naval And Military Map Of The United States. By J. Calvin Smith, Author Of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map Of The U.S. Travellers' Guide &c. 1862. J. Baker & Co. Publishers. J.M. Atwood, Map Engraver 517 Minor St. Philadelphia, Pa. Entered ... 1862 by Robert P. Smith ... Pennsylvania. (with 5 inset maps and 3 profiles).
List No 2262.000
Note 1st ed. Stevenson identifies 3 issues. Very beautiful and elaborate map showing the hand of Robert Pearsal Smith (has similarities graphically to his N.Y. State Map of 1860). The map is drawn by J.M. Atwood, but is credited to J.C. Smith, "Author of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map of the U.S., Traveler's Guide, &c." R.P. Smith is obviously competing with J.H. Colton by using J.C. Smith's name. Also, the population statistics for the 1860 census are listed, "in advance of official publication" (see Colton letter dated 1861 on this subject). Many inset views relating to the civil war, portraits of Union Generals, and thematic map insets. The U.S. map bears a striking resemblance to Colton's U.S. map of the same period (We suspect intentional on Smith's part) but it is different. H.H. Lloyd did a similar map in 1866 (High Ridge #18-165), probably by obtaining Smith's map copyright for this map and the New York State Map in 1865 when Smith left the map publishing business (Ristow p 377). With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county. Inset showing crops and animals of the U.S. Table of distances. Table of time differences. Profiles route of Lieut. A.W. Whipple's route for Pacific Railroad.

Nicely detailed showing significant structures, canals, turnpikes, swamps, and water features. In color. Relief shown by hachures.

List No 2274.000
Note Early county map copyright by Smith. Unusual borders. This county was later remapped by J.H. French in 1859 for the French-Smith N.Y. State Map project. Apparently several of the early county maps like this one had to be redone for greater accuracy (Ristow). Inset maps include: Eaton Village, Oneida, Chittenango, Canastota, Cazenovia, Hamilton, and Morrisville. With black top and bottom rollers. Edged in green silk. Full color. Shows key structures, water features, roads by type, canals, railroads, subdivisions, and ownership.

The map is the same base map as Melish's edition, with the addition of new towns, counties, roads, railroads, etc. There are two new tables listed in the lower right corner, on Public Works and the Coal Trade (replacing Melish's list of sources of the map). There was also an 1848 edition by Morris, which was very similar to the 1849. Full color by township with counties outlined. With black top and bottom rollers. Map is edged in silk.

Authors Barker, Lucy M.
Full Title Lucy M. Barker's Map Of Connecticut.
List No 2283.000
Note Manuscript map. Dated by Bridgeport (1821 incorporation of city). Howard Welsh has two sheets of notes attempting to date this map by the appearance of the Southwick "notch" of 1805 (and noting that Thompson did not identify the appearance of the notch in 1805 as a map dating device). However, we think that Thompson's approach of the appearance of towns is best here. Who was Lucy Barker? The map is very well done. Edged in golden tan silk, with black top and bottom rollers. Outline color by county.

Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron, Seymour, J.H.
Full Title Map of America by A. Arrowsmith. Philadelphia, Published by Kimber and Conrad, and Johnson and Warner. J.H. Seymour, sculp.
List No 2315.000
Note Very rare U.S. edition of Arrowsmith's America. The map has been totally reengraved by J.H. Seymour of Philadelphia using the latest Arrowsmith edition, 1811, as the base. Changes include the delineation of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Northwest Territory, Mississippi Territory and the delineation of U.S. claims for the Western and Southern Boundary of the Louisiana Territory. The upper Mississippi River has been redrawn, as has the Michigan Peninsula (fatter), and the Great Lakes. No changes found (yet) in the Western U.S. This map is extremely scarce, with no mention of it in any of the standard map references, including Stevens and Tree. It is only listed in Shaw/Shoemaker. Conrad, the publisher of this map, was related to Arrowsmith through the Arrowsmith and Lewis Atlas. With black top and bottom rollers and brown linen edging. Outline color by country.

Authors Huntington, Eleazer, Willard, A.
Full Title Map of The United States Compiled from the most Authentic Sources. Published By E. Huntington & A. Willard, Hartford, 1826. Entered ... September, 1826. (with 5 inset maps).
List No 2472.000
Note This is the first edition of the "Washington" map, so called because it used a large oval portrait of George Washington in the map's title cartouche. Later editions were published by Phelps (altered), and Thrall (identical). A portion of the main map was used by Huntington in Darby's Gazetteer (see our #2067). Oval portrait of Washington, inset maps of North America, Boston, Washington, New York, view of "The Capital at Washington." Table of distances occupies the Great Basin. Has the famous legend in the Missouri Territory: "Missouri Territory is a vast wilderness consisting chiefly of immense plains, almost destitute of wood, except in the neighborhood of streams. It is traversed by numerous herds of Buffalo & wild Horses, and by a few roving tribes of Indians." This map is also the precursor to the United States maps that appeared in Olney's School Geography, also published in Hartford. With black top and bottom rollers and green silk edging. Full color by state or territory.

To His Excellency Roger Griswold, Esq. And to The Honourable, The Legislature of The State of Connecticut, This Map is Respectfully Inscribed By the Publishers. Hartford, February 1812.
List No 2473.000
Note First detailed 19th century survey. Has Humphrysville "Woolen Manufactory..." notation, thus 1st edition, 2nd state (Thompson). Foundation map of state, first to show turnpikes. Extensive listing of manufactories, mills, churches, etc. Later published in smaller size, editions from 1820 to 1847. Engraved by Abner Reed, East Winsor. Thompson lists this same map as 1812, but it is entered in 1813, and the current Governor is listed as 1813-, leading one to believe an 1813 date would be more accurate. Outline color. With black top and bottom rollers.

Authors Lewis, Samuel
Full Title The travellers guide. A new and correct map of the United States, including great portions of Missouri Territory, Upper & Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, The Floridas, Spanish Provinces &c. Collected and compiled from the most undoubted authorities by Samuel Lewis, Geographer and Draftsman, 1819. Published, printed and coloured by Henry Charles, Philada. Copy Right secured according to law.
List No 2482.000
Note Highly detailed, goes west to 110th meridian. Streeter 3804, 3803. Probably influenced by Melish, nonetheless this is an outstanding map, with much of interest in the Missouri Territory. There is a small vignette of a "Traveler" placed over the title, indicating that this was a map to be used as a travel guide. Shows the new Alabama Territory, an interesting configuration of Illinois around Lake Michigan, and strange east west running mountain ranges leading to the Rockies. Lewis and Clark information is incorporated in the upper Missouri River area. The northern boundary with Canada is strange: it follows the 47.5 parallel and the Upper Missouri River. Outline color. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Philadelphia.

Small inset view of miners panning for gold. Topography by stipling. Very attractive for a practical county map of this period. With light blue linen edging and brown top and bottom rollers. List No 2549.000
Note Highly detailed, important map. 1st edition 1863. This map was the "mother" map for Bancroft's several issues of the pocket map versions of the northern and southern halves of this map, as well as for many later issues of this map. It is wonderfully detailed, full of endless information on the western states, information that is found in few other maps of the same period. It differs from the 1863 edition in not having an inset map of Hawaii and in showing Montana and Idaho. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county, outlined by state.
