Note	This 1833 edition is later than any recorded edition (Karrow shows editions of 1825, 1829, and 1831). There are numerous changes from the 1825 edition: the addition of counties in the developing states, changes to the statistical table to include the census of 1830, new roads, the reduction of Arkansas Territory, and the addition of three canal profiles, two of which replace the steamboat route table and the other placed above the main title. Note	This is the third year of Colton's publication of this map. Other than adding his name to the title, the map remains the same, except for many changes in the topographical and political information: Washington, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico and California (but not Kansas yet) are shown on the inset map of North America. On the main map Iowa's western counties are filled out, Texas adds many counties in the west, and railroad growth is explosive throughout, all compared to the 1850 edition. Note	Pendleton's Lithography published many Massachusetts town plans starting with Lynn and Saugus in 1829 and continuing to 1836. The plans had been drawn at the request of the State Legislature to facilitate the making of an accurate map of the state, which was eventually published by Borden in 1844. The town plans are some of the earliest published using lithography. This map of Amherst is especially attractive, with a large view of the College and Mount Pleasant Institution. Notable property owners are shown, including Prof. Hitchcock and E. Dickinson (the father of Emily Dickinson). Shows also churches, schools, houses, factories, mills, hotels, woodland, alluvial land, ponds, etc. Relief shown by hachures. With black top and bottom rollers. Map is without color.

Note	Murray was a small publisher who undoubtedly got his maps from others - in this case, Tunison. The western states on this wall map are from the same plates (although slightly reduced) as the same maps in Tunison's Peerless Universal Atlas of 1885. The eastern states are from a different source than the Tunison atlas, but still probably from another larger scale Tunison wall map of the eastern U.S. The verso of this wall map has wonderful pictures, maps of the other continents, two large hemispheres, and charts. This is a very colorful production, dense with county, railroad, and topographical information. It is similar and perhaps derived from the Watson map of the same year (see our #4793). Full color by county. Includes chrnological and statistical tables. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C.

Note	Scarce Alaska map (not in Streeter or other references) showing the Gold Fields and the routes to them. The estimated publication date is derived from the appearance of an advertisement for this map in the 1897 Punnett Brothers Map of California (our #5014). The Bancroft Library has a copy which they date as circa 1899 and they note that it was originally issued as a pocket map with title on cover: "Pocket map of Alaska and adjacent British territory, showing the newly discovered gold fields and routes leading to them..." Water printed and state outline in blue color. With brown top and bottom rollers.

Note	This map is among the most detailed and largest scale maps of Yosemite issued during this part of the 19th century, rivaled only by the Wheeler Survey map of Yosemite published in 1883. This is a second issue of this map, here mounted as a wall map. This is the same as the first issue that appeared with the Yosemite Guide Book (see our #4212) except that it adds "Hite's Cove" on the Merced River just slightly west of its junction with Devil's Gulch. In the (1870) third issue (our #4650) Hite's Cove is relocated to a point just south of the Merced on the road titled "Road to Hite's Cove" and the erasure of the prior label is apparent. We have dated this second issue (1869) as a best guess. With black top and bottom rollers, and pink linen edging. Map is without color.

Note	This is the first complete edition of this map, the largest wall map of the United States produced by Americans at that time (although Karrow 1-1418 lists an almost complete 1815 edition). Differences from the 1818 edition include Illinois and Indiana shown as Territories, a large Mississippi with no Alabama, and no Arkansas Territory. Also, there are far fewer roads shown, and fewer settlements laid down, especially in Canada. See our #432 for a proposal for publishing this map. Note	This is earlier than our 1849 Map of the United States (see #264) which uses the same base map. Here, San Francisco is named Yerba Buena (which name appeared only briefly on maps published in 1848-1849), the Gold Region has far fewer towns (no Sacramento City, Sutters City or Fremont), and the Humboldt River is not yet drawn in the Great Basin. The copyright date is still 1847. Wall map surrounded by drawings showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the landing of the pilgrims and numerous battles. A small inset map of Mexico and a chart showing the population of the United States are included. The map is in color by state or region. The gold region of California is shown in gold. Mounted on black rollers and backed with linen.

Note	This is the early 1845 issue with Iowa Territory extending north of the later state borders, Michigan counties undeveloped in the northern peninsula, the copyright date still 1833, and the smaller ornamental borders of the 1841 issue. Later in the year Mitchell changed the map substantially (see our #4223). The John Arrowsmith delineation is used in the Great Basin. Insets include the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston. Note	This is a fine example of Rand McNally's better work at the turn of the century - the main map of California and Nevada is clearly executed in printed color, with three inset maps of the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Congressional Districts are shown in California, railroads, steamship lines, and the map is bordered by two physical maps of Nevada and California, as well as photographic views of the capitals, scenery, ships, etc. The verso has a complete town index with population. Note	Changes from the 1828 edition include: the Michigan Peninsula has been completely redrawn (probably following Tanner's 1832 Map of the United States, our #4406), the Statistical Tables have been filled in for 1830, and Texas is extensively altered adding much of the information from the Steven Austin Map of Texas of 1830, although incorrectly placing Galveston at the mouth of the Trinity River. Lay's showing of Texas in this edition, while not correct in every respect, is the best detailed depiction of Texas on any large map of the United States until Tanner's 1836 edition of his Map of the United States. Note	Osgood Carleton first published a map of the United States in 1791. Another edition appeared in 1797, and then this edition in 1806. This issue is a major redrawing of the 1791 and 1797 maps, and it borrows heavily from Arrowsmith's Map of the United States, 1802 (see our list no. 5699.009, from Thompson's Alcedo Atlas, our 5699.000) especially in the west. But Carleton uses other sources as well, including Bradley's postal map. There was another issue of this map, undated, and updated to some unknown period, perhaps after 1810 or even later (Chris Lane, Philadelphia Print Shop).

Note	Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and state symbols around an eagle, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850. Compared to the 1859 edition (our 4012.000) Colona, Jefferson, and Shoshone are added as proposed states in the west, one of the only maps we have seen to show all three. Also, the imprint of Johnson and Browning, Richmond Virginia is very unusual and probably one of the last north south publishing collaborations on the eve of the Civil War. There is Note and list of Authorities which reads in part "The part of this Map, between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean, was taken (with the consent of Capt. A.A. Humphreys) principally from a map compiled from the following authorities by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Topl Engrs...In the Office of Pacific Rail Road Surveys, War Department." The map referred to must be the 1855 edition (see our copy) of Warren's General Map for the Pacific Railroad Reports. The list of Authorities is almost identical to the list on that map. Also, the map details of the west used in Johnson's map follow the 1855 edition in scope. Karrow lists many issues of this map from 1857 to 1861, with the views varying in each issue, and with Colton taking over as publisher in 1860, as in this copy. See our late Colton edition of 1890 (our #5150). With black top and bottom roller. Full color by county or territory in the U.S. and by state in Central America. Edged in dark blue silk.
