A late edition of this atlas, published as early as 1836 (see our copy). Several new maps of Australia and South Africa are added and the other maps have been updated to show railroad development. The American maps have been updated, but inadequately so in the West - the River Buenaventura is still flowing out of Salt Lake on the Mexico Map. Note
2nd edition published with additions, by Magnus. Stevenson lists a second issue by Bachmann (showing smoke over the Manassas battlefield) but not this second edition by Magnus. Many towns and battlefields have been added, especially around Richmond, Petersburg, and Fredericksburg. The lithographic printing is not as good as the Bachmann edition and the color yellow which Bachmann used effectively to show topography is not employed to much advantage here. Relief shown by shadings and pictorially. Showing battlefields, military fortifications and battleships.

Note
This 1864 edition is the latest date of publication of this atlas that we have seen (we have seen a copy of a title page of the same atlas dated 1862, published by Charles Desilver). Changes from the 1859 edition include a double page map of Pennsylvania, a new double page map of Kansas by W.H. Holmes, a double page map of Mexico, a double page map of Northern Italy, and various updates to individual maps. The maps still bear the copyright and imprint of Charles Desilver, but his address on most of the maps is changed from 251 Market Street to 714 Chesnut Street. and a few have the 1229 Chesnut Street address. Most copyright dates have been updated to 1859 or 1860 or 1862, from the 1856 copyright date in the 1859 edition. This edition marks the end of the New Universal Atlas run, which started twenty eight years earlier with the Tanner first edition of 1836. This copy is from the collection of Bruce Rosenberg and has been lent to us for digitization.
