1st edition. Not in Streeter, Phillips, Wheat. Map shows routes of important reconnaissances, Indian trails, roads, railroads in operation, projected railroads, army routes, Indian lands and reservations. One of the earliest detailed Army surveys of the area. The map was printed in two sheets, a north sheet and a south sheet. The north sheet appears in the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies as Plate CXIX, with the same title as this map, but with the title placed in the upper right corner of the north sheet. We also have the North sheet without title, dated c1875, with much additional information on new routes, railroads, etc. This map is signed by William E. Merrill, Maj. Engrs., and dated August 10, 1867. Merrill also signed our copy of the Warren Map of the U.S., 1867, with a signature date of August 26, 1867 Merrill later made maps of Kansas (See Karrow). Graff misspells Merrill's name, as does Streeter (his signature is hard to read). Dissected into 48 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into two dark green cloth end boards 22.5x13.5 with paper label reading "Kansas, Texas, And Indian Territory, With Parts Of Colorado And New Mexico. Engineer Bureau, W.D. Prepared for Issue in Engineer Office, M.D. Mo. All Person Into Whose Hands The Map Falls Are Particularly Requested To Send All Corrections And Additions To The Chief Engineer, Mil. Div. Of The Mo., St. Louis." With hand painted color.

Note
The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289); 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities; 1857 published with the reports; 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750); 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping. Without color.

Note
Very early issue of Warren's Pacific Railroad general map of the U.S. When the Pacific Railway Survey reports were published in 1855, the large Warren map of the U.S. was not completed and a smaller map was issued with a note by Warren that the larger map would soon be ready for publication. This issue of the map is dated 1855 only, unlike the final issue which was dated 1854-5-6-7 (see our #0693). Also, the list of authorities here is shorter than the later issue and has no dates later than 1855. Most importantly, this issue has major areas blank that are filled in the final issue. Various routes are drawn in ms on the map, in red and blue lines, all proceeding from points in the Midwest to the west coast, as well as some north - south routes. Also, a red line is drawn from east to west next to the 38th parallel. We think these are the trails used by travelers, perhaps a few years later, but we can't be sure. There is another early issue of this map that is between this 1855 issue and the version published with the final reports - it is dated 1857, has fewer "blank" areas that this and has more and later dated authorities (see WH copy).

Reissue, with new discoveries, of 1857 Warren "Map of the Territory of the United States..." Although Freyhold's name is not on the title, he clearly redrew this map from his earlier 1858 edition (where his name does appear on the title). This is earlier than the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions (Streeter 3080 and 3081), and should be distinguished from them in having the title still in the lower left corner (not in the lower center as in the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions), and because it does not have the Alaska inset, has 47 authorities vs. 48, and is dated Aug 26, 1867 in Ms. next to the same inscription mentioned by Streeter on his later copy (Wm. E. Merrill, etc., which Streeter mistakes for E. Hamill). Mail routes in red ink (original?)(Streeter says they were dropped from the second 1868 ed.) plus many interesting Ms. additions of names of forts, and extension of pacific railroad. Cf. Wheat 1185. Wheat does not mention this edition and was not aware of it (see his "correction" of Wheeler's mention of the map in the note, p. 244). See a very informative article by Lewis Buttery on a slightly earlier state of this map (early 1867) found at West Point - "Warren Map of 1867." Outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections, edged in blue silk, and folded into a new burgundy cloth folding case 30x22 with "Warren & Freyhold. Map of Exploratations (sic) for Pacific R.R. 1865-67" stamped in gilt.

2nd 1858 edition, adds Ives Grand Canyon expedition. Also adds information from Warren's third expedition. Schubert says there was an earlier 1858 edition that filled in information in Oregon but did not include the Ives information. Schubert also quotes a letter from Warren stating that this edition was sent to the printer in 1859. Freyhold's name appears on the title for the first time. It is dropped in the next (1867) edition and then reappears in the 1868 edition. Rare - apparently there is only one other copy of this map - in the Millard Fillmore Map Collection in the LOC (see Stephenson article in Map Collector No. 12). This copy came from the Bancroft Library as a duplicate - perhaps they thought it was a duplicate of the 1857 edition. With brown wood side rollers. Map is without color and mounted on linen.

Buffalo are present in "inumerable bands," and it is suggested that the dung be used for fuel. Timber is scarce , except on the islands. It is noted that the Pawnee pose a threat to the traveler as they are likely to rob the emigrants along the route. A note from Fremont's report about the first viewing of the buffalo is included below the map.

Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. From the notes on the map, this appears to have been a difficult stretch of road. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post.

This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place.

The accompanying notes state, "This is the most trying section for the traveller on the whole route. Water, though good and plenty, is difficult to reach, as the river is hemmed in by high and vertical rocks and many of the bystreams are without water in the dry season. Grass is only to be found at the marked camping places, and barely sufficient to keep strong animals from starvation. Game there is none. The road is very rough by volcanic rocks, detrimental to wagons and carts. In sage bushes consists the only Fuel. Lucky, that by all these hardships the traveller is not harassed by the Indians, who are peacable & harmless."

Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility."

Note
A wonderfully detailed Army Engineers map of southwestern New Mexico, listed in Graff with no explanation for the fact that this map was clearly meant to be the lower left corner of a four sheet map of New Mexico. If all the other sheets were printed (and the fact that Graff only lists this sheet is indication that they may not have been) the resulting map would be huge - about 140 cm square. El Paso is shown, as is a small part of Arizona and Mexico. Given its large scale, one suspects that this was the most detailed map of New Mexico published at the time. Fitch 44-201 lists this map and the sheet that would join it above, titled Northwestern New Mexico, and dated 1885. Map is without color. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights.

Map Of The United States. Prepared by authority of The Honorable The Secretary Of War, in the Office of the Chief of Engineers under the direction of Brig. General A.A. Humphreys, Chief of Engineers & Bvt. Maj. Gen'l, U.S. Army. Originally Compiled and drawn by E. Freyhold. (inset) West Indies and Isthmus Of Darien. (inset) Territory Of Alaska.
List No

Note
While this is based on the Freyhold "Military Map of the United States" of 1869, it has been completely redrawn and enlarged, adding much of Mexico and British North America to the original map, as well as an inset map of the West Indies. Topography is no longer shown, but the Military Forts are prominently displayed in red overprinting with flags. In the west there is much new road development. Majority of map is printed in full color in shades of tan; the States are bordered in red and Indian Reservations are identified with shading. Not in Wheat or any standard references. Map is dissected into 16 sections, mounted on linen, and folded into unlabelled brown cloth end sheets 33.5x23.

Engs. under a Resolution of the U.S. Senate. From the best authorities which could be obtained. 1850. Engraved by Sherman and Smith, New-York.

Note
This was the best general map of the American West published by the Topographical Engineers until the Emory and Warren maps of 1857. Wheat calls it "beautiful... a synthesis of the many and varied cartographic activities of the U.S. Army carried on in the West since the onset of the Mexican War, with numerous individual maps subjected to correction and enhanced by new data." A large and imposing production, the map shows the new political divisions of California, Utah and New Mexico and is engraved in the best style by the well known Sherman and Smith firm of New York. Map is without color.
