Atlas of Central Europe by Joseph Edmund Woerl in 60 sheets. each 45x52 or smaller, dissected into 6 sections, backed with linen, folded and placed in cardboard case 25x20, with title "Karte von Central-Europa" in gold on spine. Sheet 8 includes Title with text, inset map, and tables of population of provinces, towns and islands. Maps showing roads, railroads, cities, towns, landmarks, canals, fortifications, forests, rivers and mountains. Relief shown by hachures. Depth shown by bathymetric lines and soundings. Includes inset maps: Environs de Paris -- Plan de Strasbourg -- Plan de Lyon -- Plan de Bordeaux -- Plan de Rouen -- [Bruxelles-Louvain-Nivelles] -- Plan de Nantes -- Plan d'Orléans -- Contorni di Milano -- Planta di Firenze -- Planta topografica della città di Roma.Includes a separate index sheet "Assemblage zur Karte von Central - Europe. Masstab 1:500,000. Verlag von Herder in Freiburg I. B." Maps are the earliest of two-color lithography. As late as 1870 this atlas rendered important service to the German army, It is also an outstanding example of early lithographic map printing. Woerl seems to have pioneered a method of using color lithography, he used a red lithographic stone for a second overlay printing and may have used a unique combination of lithography and engraving to produce these maps. Imprint of some maps are in French. Library lacks sheets 26 and 59.

The title page is dated 1817 and the text is unchanged from the 1817 edition, but the Melish base map is changed from the 1817 edition Melish map to one that shows all of Florida and Missouri and Arkansas (with Arkansas in an 1828 formation). The map is the second state (White 1817B), although it is really an entirely different map. It is similar to the Map of The United States that appears in Melish's Traveler's Guide of 1822 and in Carey and Lea's American Atlas, but it has been reengraved, and the title is changed to United States of North America. It is colored geologically, but there is no color key. The same map appears in the Jackson Wreath of 1829, but in an earlier state. Bound in at the back is the "Essay..." mentioned above. This copy belonged to Francis P. Farquhar, noted California historian. Bound in brown cloth covers with "Geology" printed in gold on the spine.

An important document about the road network. Red lithographic stone printing. In 23 parts (20 maps 43x46, a title page with decorative illustrations, sample maps and coat of arms, index sheet, and table) placed in cardboard case 54x64, with title "Woerl Atlas der Wuerttemberg." All the maps are at the same scale (1:200,000) and fit together into either one very large composite of all 48 maps or sub-maps of Switzerland (19 sheets plus title, see our 6824.000), Wurtttemberg (12 sheets including title) and Baden. We do not have all 48 maps but rather 24 in this group and 19 in the Switzerland group (although 3 maps appear in both groups, so our net total maps is 39 of 48).
