(Title Page to) Geographical exercises; calculated to facilitate the study of geography, and, by an expeditious method, to imprint a knowledge of the science on the minds of youth. With a concise introduction, explaining the principles of geography. By William Faden. London: Printed for the proprietor (successor to the late Mr. Jefferys, Geographer to the King) at the Corner of St. Martin's Lane, Charing-Cross. MDCCLXXVII.
List No
2835B
Note
Includes engraved illustration of globe, telescope, anchor, building and ships. Atlas of 9 completed and 9 outline maps. The maps are beautifully executed and quite large. According to Faden in the preface, this was a project begun by Jefferys before his death in 1771 and now completed by Faden. Faden also says that Henry Peacham used outline maps for teaching in the early part of the 17th century, but that they had not been used since then, at least in England (see our copy of Courcillon de Dangeau's teaching atlas of 1693 which used outline maps). There is an introduction which explains basic geographical principals and map drawing. The maps are dated 1773-76. The World Map on Mercator's Projection includes Cook's tracks. Scarce. Not listed in Phillips, NMM, World, Tooley. Faden published an Atlas Minimus for the use of schools in 1798 (Phillips 690), but the format was much smaller and did not use outline maps -- it was an atlas with 55 maps. W.H. has a later edition with several maps dated 1783. B. McC. has a copy that a copy that is similar to ours, but Jeffrey's name has been removed from all but the America map, probably indicating a slightly later date than this one. All three copies are dated 1777 on the title page. Maps have outline color. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Faden's geography for youth" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Pen-and-ink. A large atlas of outline maps by Dangeau, perhaps some of the earliest examples of outline maps used for teaching geography. This copy was put together by Dangeau. The maps were probably issued separately, and this atlas is one of the few bound copies. A note in French opposite the manuscript title page says that Buache had examples of these maps in his library. Some additions to the book were made by an owner subsequent to Dangeau's death in 1723. This copy was in the Phillipps Manuscript collection (no. 24790) and was sold by Sotheby's in 1903 and 1919. Of the 80 maps, 36 are 18 sets of 2 maps each, one a regular map and the other with blanks to be filled in by the student, with the regular maps having flaps on both sides with explanatory text; these maps teach basic notions of geography of the World, Europe, and France. 23 maps present administrative, both civic and ecclesiastical, divisions of France. 21 maps are of the countries which then formed the Holy Roman Empire of Germany, in the same manner as the maps of France. There are also 44 tables illustrating the history and genealogy of the French dynasties; four of these tables are beautiful illustrations of coats of arms. The atlas is bound in full dark green leather covered boards with title and ornate border embossed in gold; the spine is stamped with "Geographie de la France par l'Abbe de Dangeau 74. Cartes, 38 Planches."

First (and only?) ed. One of the earliest school atlases to use a system of letters on blank maps that are coded to a separate key list. This method was based on a teaching system formulated by Johann Hubner (1668-1731) and adapted by Homann. Four celestial maps illustrate the systems of Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe, Copernicus, and Descartes. Fourteen keyed maps show the countries and continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. California is shown as an island on the Americas map, and listed under islands in the key. Homann published an Atlas Scholasticus in 1732 (Phillips 577) which was also a collaboration with Hubner. Scarce. Maps are in full color, and atlas is bound in untitled red marbled paper covered boards with a vellum spine.

Abbot Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet (c. 1730 – 1790) was a French cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Clouet held the post of Royal Geographer of the Academie des Sciences de Rouen, he had offices in Paris and Cadiz. Clouet’s most important work is his Geographie Moderne, which was published in various editions from 1776 – 1793. Clouet also produced a series of stunning and highly decorative wall maps depicting the various continents. He followed in the footsteps of Jean-Baptiste Nolin and other French cartographers, reissuing these grand wall-maps in the latter part of the 18th century to decorate the houses of Paris and more unusually Spain.

Note
37 manuscript maps of the world, done by a young lady, Frances Bowen, as part of a geographical exercise. The result is very fine -- these are some of the most delicate and well executed children's maps we have seen. The paper is watermarked J. Whatman 1808 and E & P 1804, both English watermarks, hence the assumption of English origin (furthermore the meridian is from London on the World and U.S. maps) although it could be American. There is a double page map of the World, another of the Mediterranean, maps of all the continents and countries of Europe and Asia, and maps of the United States, North America, West Indies, and South America. Rebound with marbled paper boards and quarter leather with "General Atlas, Frances Bowen - 1810" on the spine.
