Note
The existence of this book of penmanship throws interesting light on our other book of penmanship by Frances Henshaw, our 2501.000. This book by Harriet Baker is dated four years earlier, 1819, and from another school in Windsor, Vermont (Henshaw's school was in Middlebury, Vermont). Generally, the two books follow very similar structure, both the text and the maps, which would indicate that the production of these books of penmanship was more frequent than previously thought and also suggests that there was a common template used, even by different schools, in their construction. It can be said that Baker's maps are exquisite, perhaps a bit more so than Henshaw's, but Henshaw's text descriptions of the states are more elaborate than Baker's. For some reason, Baker omits maps of New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, while including descriptions of most of them. Henshaw has no map or description of Michigan or Illinois. For the sources of the maps and text, see our entry for Henshaw's book, 2501.000. The Osher Map Library has a copy of another book of penmanship, also from Mr. Dunham's School in Windsor Vermont, titled “Catharine M. Cook’s Book of Penmanship at Mr. Dunham’s School, Windsor, Vermont, June 15th, 1818”

Note
This small hand atlas has six early maps, three of which are particularly important to the mapping of the American Revolution: The Seat of War in the Northern Colonies and The seat of War in the Middle British Colonies (both derived from the Evans/Pownall maps), and the Seat of War in the Southern Colonies (by Bernard Romans). Nicknamed the "Holster Atlas" because it was made for the used of British army officers. All maps in outline color, folded and bound into book with paper covered boards and quarter leather with "American Pocket Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note
According to Phillips, Joseph Churchman authored the text and James Churchman (brother?) authored the map. The map, 42x53, is most extraordinary and rare: it shows an eagle superimposed in engraving and color on a map of the United States, with the talons in Florida, the eye in Vermont, and the wings spreading west to the Missouri Territory. It is beautifully done. Pages 244-48 of the text explain the construction of the Eagle map; it is also stated here that the author intended to publish a larger version of the map by subscription. I have found no record of such a map being published. Book covered with blue cloth with "Rudiments of National Knowledge" on spine.

Note
In addition to a two volume Italian translation of Raynal's History of North America, this book contains the first edition of Zatta's twelve sheet version of Mitchell's Map of North America, plus three other maps: Il Canada, Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton, and La Baja D' Hudson. All of these maps appeared also in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo published from 1779-1785. A second edition of the Zatta/Mitchell maps was published in 1791 (see P651). Zatta's version of Mitchell is not an exact or complete copy: the Zatta maps do not cover the far western portions of Mitchell's map, many geographical changes are introduced, and Bermuda is depicted as well as Jamaica., neither of which are shown by Mitchell. A separate map covers Newfoundland and Cape Breton, on the same scale. Maps are hand painted with outline color. Covers are quarter leather light brown marbled paper covered boards with "Raynal. Storia Dell' America Settentrionale. 1778" stamped in gilt on the new leather spine.

Note
1st Edition; Fielding Lucas engraved most of the maps. The 1823 edition was unchanged in most copies, a few have minor map updates, and one (see our copy) has all of the 1827 edition maps while still retaining the 1823 title page and most of the text. The 1827 edition includes much new material, with all the maps and text updated, except for the Washington, D.C., and Michigan maps. A French edition by Buchon was published in 1825, an abridged London edition in 1823 (see our copies), and a German edition by C.F. Weiland in 1824-1828 (P1225, Espenhorst 1.6.3). This was the first American Atlas that was modeled on Le Sage's plan of having explanatory text surrounding the maps. The maps are beautifully drawn and colored. Lucas went on to publish his own General Atlas in 1823, using similar maps but without the text. Rebound into half leather tan paper covered boards with "American Atlas. 1822." stamped in gilt along the spine.

Note
This atlas was Finley's attempt to compete with Henry Tanner's American Atlas - the maps are grouped in much the same arrangement as Tanner used and the cartography and engraving are equal to Tanner, although the scale and map size are smaller. There are only two issues that we have seen, both dated 1826 on the title page, but with different dates on the maps. In the first issue, the maps are dated 1824-26; in the second issue (this copy) the maps are dated 1826-27. Finley continued to publish the maps as pocket maps until 1831 when he sold his map and atlas copyrights to Mitchell, who reissued this American Atlas only once, in 1831 (see our #3884) but continued to issue the pocket maps, with updates, until about 1850. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with red leather label stamped with "Finley's American Atlas" in gilt. Full color.

Note
One of the most important atlases of the American Revolutionary War period. There are 22 maps on 29 sheets. The majority of the important large scale maps of the colonies are here, appearing together for the first time after having been issued as separates by Jefferys in the 1750's and 60's. This copy is the 1st 1776 edition, with the Quebec map, without the Lake Champlain map, as issued. This copy is the same as NMM 361, except the title page says 48 copper plates rather then the 49 on NMM 361, and on the NY/NJ map it is Major Holland rather than Capt. Holland (our NY/NJ map says Major-the 1775 says Capt-our index omits Holland-the reproduction atlas map copy says Major, and Carver is eliminated (why?); probably indicates that this was slightly before the NMM 361, as the 1775 title page is identical to this one (although we have not seen it yet-relying on P1165), except for the date. Summary of editions: 1775 (actually issued in 1776, has Evans Middle Colonies map, P1165); 1776 1st issue (our copy with 48 on TP, Quebec replaces Evans, N.Y- & N.J. is dated 1776, rather than 1775 and adds Pownall corrections and improvements); 1776 2nd issue (NMM 361, 49 on TP); 1777 (1776 on TP, N. Amer changes from Bowen/Gibson to Pownall version with 1777 on map, adds L. Champlain, P1166 -our reproduction copy); 1778 (P3659a, NMM 362, no changes from 1777); 1782 (P1169, no changes except Phillips says this copy has 1783 ed of N. Amer., inserted-later?) Our TP is a transition from 1775 to NMM361; NMM361 anticipates the Lake Champlain map in saying 49 plates. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Jeffery's American Atlas. London MDCCLXXVI" stamped in gilt on the spine.

This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. This is the first American "road book" and shows great detail in a series of strip maps of various routes around the middle Atlantic states. See the last image in this series for a key map showing the areas depicted by the maps. This set has 66 of 83 published maps. Rare - Ristow estimates only 30-35 copies extant. See Ristow's reproduction edition of this book for a complete discussion of Colles. With the volume are nine unbound maps from the set: 23, 24, 25, 33, 40, 41, 42, 44, and 45. Maps have been rebound in hardbound green leather covers with Colles's Roads in gilt on spine. Original blue paper covers bound at the back with title label "Colles's Survey of the Roads."

Not an Annual Report! Unique edition-all engraved. A set of most of the Coast Survey maps published to July 1854, and all are engraved instead of lithographed as were the maps in the annual reports. Each map has the unique inscription at the top reading "Presented under authority of an act of Congress of the United States of June 3d 1844 by direction of the Treasury Department A.D. Bache Superintendent Coast Survey." U.S. Atlases lists another edition (L3666) of 1856. Bound with half leather and marble paper covered boards with title in gilt on spine. David Rumsey Collection copy: the chart "Sea Coast of Delaware, Maryland and part of Virginia" is lithographed rather than engraved. Laid in is a broadside published by the Survey "Coast Survey charts published, sketches and preliminary charts, the following sketches will be gratuitously distributed:, Agents for sale of maps:, Coast Survey Office, Washington, March 15, 1853" (our pub. list no. 5754).

Exquisite hand drawn maps of the states. Notwithstanding the title, this is a geography book hand drawn by a very promising student. It includes descriptions of Astronomical Geography, the Ptolemaic, Brahean and Copernican Systems, Comets, Great Circles, Equator, Meridian, Horizon, Colures, Tropics, Polar Circles, Zones, Climates, Latitude and Longitude, a section titled America, and 19 maps of the states with a descriptive page for each. The maps are copied from the 1805 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, except for Ohio, which is from Arrowsmith and Lewis' Atlas, 1812, and Indiana, from an unknown source. The text is copied from Morse's Geography Made Easy, probably 1807, 11th edition, but certainly before the 12th edition (which was changed substantially); the text describing the maps is original. The only mystery is why she used such out of date sources if, in fact, she made this book in 1823. The penmanship is remarkable both in the execution of the maps and text. One of a kind. At the bottom of the title page: "presented to her son T.A. Post - Feb 4th 1872." Emma Willard led the Middlebury Female Academy from 1807-9, see DAB. Henshaw lived from 1809-1873 (email from her great-great-great-grandson to us) so she would have been about 14 years old when she made these maps in 1823.

Map has many changes from 1839 edition. Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. The map contains eight inset maps showing the vicinities of Cincinnati, Albany, Falls of Niagara, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston.

First atlas of America printed in America. First edition. These maps were also published in Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography (1795) and most of the maps say "engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's improved." The maps were again used for the 1796 edition of Carey's General Atlas, unchanged except for the Tennessee map, which is titled "Tennassee State" instead of "Tennassee Government" which is the title in both the American Atlas and the Guthrie Atlas - see Wheat and Brun, and has several counties delineated in the eastern part of the state which do not show in the 1795 edition of the map. NMM 480 (American Atlas) has "Tennassee State" indicating that Carey was not consistent. This atlas was the model for John Reid's American Atlas of 1796. This copy's maps have very strong impressions. Rebound quarter leather, marbled paper covered boards.

The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. 1st edition of the first geological map of U.S. A portion of a map of the U.S. by Samuel Lewis is used to make this map. The full sheet of paper was put on a larger plate and pulled, leaving the upper and right side without borders, as issued. Uncut and untrimmed, the map appears here with Maclure's original essay on the geology of the U.S. In 1817 Maclure published an expanded versus of his essay, using the small Melish Map of the U.S. as a base. Maclure was dissatisfied with the Lewis map because of its rendering of the mountains, and an errata slip is attached to the back of p 423 explaining this (and stating that originally it was intended to use a reduction of the Bradley U.S. map). See Marcou 1858 for more discussion of the Lewis map. Maclure did a Paris printing of the article and Map (using a map by Volney as a base) in 1811, in French. The Lewis map is most likely the Map of the U.S. published in the 2nd edition of Carey's American Atlas, 1809 (P-Maps p 876,Walsh). Maclure's map and essay are very rare. There is an inscription on the title page to "Mons. F.A. Michaux-Paris, from his friend..." Map bound into the back of paper covered boards with the title handwritten on the spine. Map in full color by geologic structure.
