1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. | Note |
According to Phillips, Joseph Churchman authored the text and James Churchman (brother?) authored the map. The map, 42x53, is most extraordinary and rare: it shows an eagle superimposed in engraving and color on a map of the United States, with the talons in Florida, the eye in Vermont, and the wings spreading west to the Missouri Territory. It is beautifully done. Pages 244-48 of the text explain the construction of the Eagle map, it is also stated here that the author intended to publish a larger version of the map by subscription. I have found no record of such a map being published. Book covered with blue cloth with "Rudiments of National Knowledge" on spine. |

| Note |
In addition to a two volume Italian translation of Raynal's History of North America, this book contains the first edition of Zatta's twelve sheet version of Mitchell's Map of North America, plus three other maps: Il Canada, Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton, and La Baja D' Hudson. All of these maps appeared also in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo published from 1779-1785. A second edition of the Zatta/Mitchell maps was published in 1791 (see P651). Zatta's version of Mitchell is not an exact or complete copy: the Zatta maps do not cover the far western portions of Mitchell's map, many geographical changes are introduced, and Bermuda is depicted as well as Jamaica., neither of which are shown by Mitchell. A separate map covers Newfoundland and Cape Breton, on the same scale. Maps are hand painted with outline color. Covers are quarter leather light brown marbled paper covered boards with "Raynal. Storia Dell' America Settentrionale. 1778" stamped in gilt on the new leather spine. |

From the Carey & Lea 1822 and 1823 American Atlas editions. Comparison to Carey and Lea edition of 1822: most of the state maps are similar, except Georgia, Louisiana, New York adds information on Canadian coast of Lake Erie, U.S. map adds Long's information in the west and labels the Great American Desert (in the 1822 edition Carey & Lea used Long's information on Map 35, but only slightly on the U.S. map, as they explain in their note on the U.S. Map), Phillips points out some of the other differences -- N. America shows Russian America and a Map of Russian America reflects the treaty of 1825, Mexico is different, Guatemala is added, Guadeloupe and Martinique are substituted for the Windward and Leeward Islands Maps, maps of Guyana and Paraguay are added in S. America. In general, some of the United States maps are taken from the 1822 and early 1823 editions (for example, Illinois and Indiana are from the 1822/23) and some are from the later 1823/26 edition (the U.S. and Louisiana, for example). Full color. Covers are new half leather mauve marbled paper covered boards with "Buchon. Atlas des Deux Ameriques" stamped on the spine in gold. |

| Note |
This atlas is the second atlas published in the 19th century of one of the individual states in the U.S., preceded only by Mill's Atlas of South Carolina, issued in 1825, and followed closely, also in 1829, by Greenleaf's Atlas of the State of Maine (Ristow, p96). This copy is the 1st edition, second state, actually published in 1832. Howard Welsh rescued this copy which was obviously about to be broken up and disbound. When we acquired it from his estate it was completely disbound, subsequently we had it rebound and restored. The Map of the City and County of New York is dated 2nd. ed., 1832, Haskell 725 lists this as appearing in the 1829 ed. of the Atlas. Therefore, we can presume that there are two 1829 eds., the first state with this map dated 1829 (Haskell 721) and the second state which is this copy with the 1832 map (Haskell 725). The Map of New York State is also dated 1832. All other maps are dated 1829. Full hand painted color. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "New York Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

1st Edition, Fielding Lucas engraved most of the maps. The 1823 edition was unchanged in most copies, a few have minor map updates, and one (see our copy) has all of the 1827 edition maps while still retaining the 1823 title page and most of the text. The 1827 edition includes much new material, with all the maps and text updated, except for the Washington, D.C., and Michigan maps. A French edition by Buchon was published in 1825, an abridged London edition in 1823 (see our copies), and a German edition by C.F. Weiland in 1824-1828 (P1225, Espenhorst 1.6.3). This was the first American Atlas that was modeled on Le Sage's plan of having explanatory text surrounding the maps. The maps are beautifully drawn and colored. Lucas went on to publish his own General Atlas in 1823, using similar maps but without the text. Rebound into half leather tan paper covered boards with "American Atlas. 1822." stamped in gilt along the spine. |

This large one volume 1856 edition is scarcer than the two volume edition. Initially, Colton's atlas was published by subscription (see our subscribers salesman's book) and in parts, then in a two volume edition with the first volume (North and South America) issued in 1855 and the second volume (Europe, Asia, etc.)in 1856. This atlas was the first world atlas produced by Colton, after many years of issuing pocket maps, wall maps, guides, and maps for books. The atlas was one of the finest and most accurate of the period - it had a long publishing run, continuing for over thirty years (with the title changed to Colton's General Atlas after 1856). In this issue, the Texas map is single page, 2nd state. New Mexico and Utah 2nd state. Bound into quarter leather embossed brown cloth covered boards with "Colton's Atlas Of The World" and an illustration stamped in gold. The same title is stamped on the spine. Full color maps. |

This volume 7 of Neptune Francois forms an extensive atlas of charts of the western coasts of North and South America, with most charts dated or updated to the 1820's. 25 charts are listed in the index, yet 36 charts are present here. This copy is from the library of the Duc d'Orleans. This issue must be later than the NMM 256, since it has 10 extra charts dated from 1823 to 1828, the latest date in NMM256 is 1822. The eight Vancouver charts appear to be original issues or restrikes from the original plates, the La Perouse charts are absolutely restrikes on newer paper, with the Mappe Monde updated in Australia to show the coastal discoveries in the south. The progression of engraving style from the La Perouse to the 1828 charts is most interesting. The charts of Mexico and South America are largely copies of the Spanish Marine charts issued in the early 1800s showing the Malaspina Expedition tracks (see W. Heckrotte's copy of the Spanish charts). Bound in full red leather covers with decorative gold border and the same titles as above stamped on the spine. |

Rand McNally is not listed on the title page. A very unusual presentation of nine index maps showing the route from New York to Albany and Saratoga Springs and return, with photographs showing with printed arrows each turn to make in the road. Eventually, route signs were posted for automobiles, but before that occurred, this book filled a need. The preface shows seven "Divisions" of maps published, including Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, and New York City. The photographs are wonderful and give a real feeling of the environment people traveled through in the first years of the automobile. Buisseret calls the presentation "ingenious" though he notes that not many journeys occurred at night, when these photos would not be very useful. Bound with dark brown leather covers. In gold on the front cover: The Rand McNally Photo=Auto Maps and Guide Book. New York to Albany and Saratoga Springs. Saratoga Springs to Albany and New York. Includes many advertisements for automobiles, hotels and automotive products (not scanned) |

| Note |
This atlas was Finley's attempt to compete with Henry Tanner's American Atlas - the maps are grouped in much the same arrangement as Tanner used and the cartography and engraving are equal to Tanner, although the scale and map size are smaller. There are only two issues that we have seen, both dated 1826 on the title page, but with different dates on the maps. In the first issue, the maps are dated 1824-26, in the second issue (this copy) the maps are dated 1826-27. Finley continued to publish the maps as pocket maps until 1831 when he sold his map and atlas copyrights to Mitchell, who reissued this American Atlas only once, in 1831 (see our #3884) but continued to issue the pocket maps, with updates, until about 1850. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with red leather label stamped with "Finley's American Atlas" in gilt. Full color. |

This is the scarce Senate issue with four maps by "Baron" Egloffstein. Egloffstein used a unique engraving process to achieve a superb rendering of topographical features, he used the same technique in the map is drew for Macomb's Report (see our #2699). Of the maps in Ives's Report Wheat said "The two maps were drawn by F.W. Egloffstein...the first...is one of his best." Rare in this form with the two additional geological maps in color wash. These only appear in the Senate issue. They are the same as the two "normal" maps that appear in the House and Senate issue, but they have colors overlaid to show geological formations. Report bound with blue cloth covered boards with title on spine. |

One of the most important atlases of the American Revolutionary War period. There are 22 maps on 29 sheets. The majority of the important large scale maps of the colonies are here, appearing together for the first time after having been issued as separates by Jefferys in the 1750's and 60's. This copy is the 1st 1776 edition, with the Quebec map, without the Lake Champlain map, as issued. This copy is the same as NMM 361, except the title page says 48 copper plates rather then the 49 on NMM 361, and on the NY/NJ map it is Major Holland rather than Capt. Holland (our NY/NJ map says Major-the 1775 says Capt-our index omits Holland-the reproduction atlas map copy says Major, and Carver is eliminated (why?), probably indicates that this was slightly before the NMM 361, as the 1775 title page is identical to this one (although we have not seen it yet-relying on P1165), except for the date. Summary of editions: 1775 (actually issued in 1776, has Evans Middle Colonies map, P1165), 1776 1st issue (our copy with 48 on TP, Quebec replaces Evans, N.Y- & N.J. is dated 1776, rather than 1775 and adds Pownall corrections and improvements), 1776 2nd issue (NMM 361, 49 on TP), 1777 (1776 on TP, N. Amer changes from Bowen/Gibson to Pownall version with 1777 on map, adds L. Champlain, P1166 -our reproduction copy), 1778 (P3659a, NMM 362, no changes from 1777), 1782 (P1169, no changes except Phillips says this copy has 1783 ed of N. Amer., inserted-later?) Our TP is a transition from 1775 to NMM361, NMM361 anticipates the Lake Champlain map in saying 49 plates. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Jeffery's American Atlas. London MDCCLXXVI" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

First edition. This atlas was one of the best world atlases published in England in the second half of the 19th century. The North America map shows Colorado as a Territory - very up to date on U.S. political changes (most U.S. atlases do not show Colorado until 1862) for an English Atlas. Also shows Nevada, and a horizontal Arizona. However, the western U.S. map shows none of this -- its layout is pre-1860. Maps have a mixture of hand colored outline and printed blue color for water. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Keith Johnston's royal atlas of modern geography" stamped in gilt on the cover, and "The Royal Atlas. Keith Johnston. W. Magnificent, huge atlas showing the area of the 40th Parallel Survey in topographical and geological maps. Wheat notes: "These are pioneer survey maps, and as such are most interesting. Mapping the West in so broad a cross-section had never before been attempted, a portent of things to come." King, at the age of 25, was made Geologist-in-charge of the Survey in 1867. He was formally ordered "to examine and describe the geological structure, geographical condition and natural resources of a belt of country extending from the 120th meridian eastward to the 105th meridian, along the 40th parallel of latitude with sufficient expansion north and south to include the lines of 'Central' and 'Union Pacific' railroads..." (Wheat). The topographical sheets depict features by brush shading rather than hachuring. In original binding -rare. Bound in green half leather with a label on the front, "Geological and Topographical Atlas Accompanying the Report of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel. The second edition was published in 1815 after the conclusion of the war, and has different text, and is more of a history. Henry Tanner engraved the five large maps that Melish drew, and J. Vallance engraved the three small maps. We believe this is the first book Melish published with the idea that it was an "Atlas." |

First edition. Has Carey and Hart borders. Ristow's second 1846 issue. The first issue by Mitchell alone, without Tanner's name on the title page. Tanner issued this atlas first in 1836 with engraved maps, then it was taken over by Carey and Hart in 1843 and converted by them to lithographic maps in 1845. In 1846 Mitchell took over the publishing of this atlas and continued until 1849, after which it was published until 1860 by Thomas, Cowperthwait and then Charles DeSilver. This atlas is important in American printing history in that it was the first American atlas to be converted from engraved map plates to lithographic map plates - greatly reducing the cost of production and thus making the book made widely affordable by the general public. The maps are in full color, atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Mitchell's Universal Atlas" stamped in gilt on front label. |

The SDUK, as the Society was known, produced inexpensive maps to encourage broad use in education. The maps in these two volumes were issued in parts over several years. The city plans are of particular interest, with vignettes and great detail. The gnomonic star maps were issued separately in this edition in their own covers. This is the second edition, the first being by Baldwin and Cradock, with the maps issued in numbers and later bound as a set. Rumsey Collection copy originally issued without the 6 "World on a gnomonic projection" maps, copies of them have been laid in. Atlas is bound in half leather dark brown cloth covered boards with "Maps. Vol. 1," "Maps. Vol. 2" stamped in gold on the spines. Maps with outline color, geological map of England and Wales hand colored in full color. |

This was clearly inspired by the Andreas Atlases of Iowa and Minnesota - it has much the same format, and is equally well executed. Ristow describes the sad fate of this atlas - Walling and Tackabury published their Atlas of the State of Wisconsin in 1876 (P2633) which greatly reduced the market and thus fewer than 5000 copies of this 1878 atlas were sold, resulting in heavy financial loss and the exhaustion and ultimate demise of Mr. Snyder. H.R. Page acquired the plates and published another expanded edition in 1881 called the Illustrated Historical atlas of Wisconsin (P5079). Atlas is bound in half leather black cloth covered boards with "Illustrated historical atlas of Wisconsin" stamped in gold on the front cover and blind stamped on the back, the spine reads "Historical atlas of Wisconsin. Illustrated. 1878." With printed and hand painted color. |

| Note |
The non American maps may be partly derived from the Dower/Teesdale General Atlas of 1831 - see P3549 & P772. North America map has states in different colors and has the following differences from the 1843 Atlas copy: San Felipe de Austin (as opposed to San Felipe in the 1843), and Sioux and Wisconsin Dists (not in the 1843 edition). Wheat mistakenly uses a post 1836 issue as an illustration in Trans Miss and calls it 1836. The Mexico map has differences from 1843 issue: Houston appears in 1843 and not in 1836, and San Felipe de Austin in 1836 is San Felipe in 1843. The Michigan map changes substantially between the 1836, the 1842, and the 1843 editions, especially the shoreline. See notes to the (1838) edition which also has a title page dated 1836. Bound in half leather, marbled paper covered boards, with "Tanner's Universal Atlas. 1836." stamped in gilt along the spine. Full color. |
