| Note |
This atlas was Finley's attempt to compete with Henry Tanner's American Atlas - the maps are grouped in much the same arrangement as Tanner used and the cartography and engraving are equal to Tanner, although the scale and map size are smaller. There are only two issues that we have seen, both dated 1826 on the title page, but with different dates on the maps. In the first issue, the maps are dated 1824-26, in the second issue (this copy) the maps are dated 1826-27. Finley continued to publish the maps as pocket maps until 1831 when he sold his map and atlas copyrights to Mitchell, who reissued this American Atlas only once, in 1831 (see our #3884) but continued to issue the pocket maps, with updates, until about 1850. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with red leather label stamped with "Finley's American Atlas" in gilt. Full color. |

This is the scarce Senate issue with four maps by "Baron" Egloffstein. Egloffstein used a unique engraving process to achieve a superb rendering of topographical features, he used the same technique in the map is drew for Macomb's Report (see our #2699). Of the maps in Ives's Report Wheat said "The two maps were drawn by F.W. Egloffstein...the first...is one of his best." Rare in this form with the two additional geological maps in color wash. These only appear in the Senate issue. They are the same as the two "normal" maps that appear in the House and Senate issue, but they have colors overlaid to show geological formations. Report bound with blue cloth covered boards with title on spine. |

One of the most important atlases of the American Revolutionary War period. There are 22 maps on 29 sheets. The majority of the important large scale maps of the colonies are here, appearing together for the first time after having been issued as separates by Jefferys in the 1750's and 60's. This copy is the 1st 1776 edition, with the Quebec map, without the Lake Champlain map, as issued. This copy is the same as NMM 361, except the title page says 48 copper plates rather then the 49 on NMM 361, and on the NY/NJ map it is Major Holland rather than Capt. Holland (our NY/NJ map says Major-the 1775 says Capt-our index omits Holland-the reproduction atlas map copy says Major, and Carver is eliminated (why?), probably indicates that this was slightly before the NMM 361, as the 1775 title page is identical to this one (although we have not seen it yet-relying on P1165), except for the date. Summary of editions: 1775 (actually issued in 1776, has Evans Middle Colonies map, P1165), 1776 1st issue (our copy with 48 on TP, Quebec replaces Evans, N.Y- & N.J. is dated 1776, rather than 1775 and adds Pownall corrections and improvements), 1776 2nd issue (NMM 361, 49 on TP), 1777 (1776 on TP, N. Amer changes from Bowen/Gibson to Pownall version with 1777 on map, adds L. Champlain, P1166 -our reproduction copy), 1778 (P3659a, NMM 362, no changes from 1777), 1782 (P1169, no changes except Phillips says this copy has 1783 ed of N. Amer., inserted-later?) Our TP is a transition from 1775 to NMM361, NMM361 anticipates the Lake Champlain map in saying 49 plates. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Jeffery's American Atlas. London MDCCLXXVI" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

First edition. This atlas was one of the best world atlases published in England in the second half of the 19th century. The North America map shows Colorado as a Territory - very up to date on U.S. political changes (most U.S. atlases do not show Colorado until 1862) for an English Atlas. Also shows Nevada, and a horizontal Arizona. However, the western U.S. map shows none of this -- its layout is pre-1860. Maps have a mixture of hand colored outline and printed blue color for water. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Keith Johnston's royal atlas of modern geography" stamped in gilt on the cover, and "The Royal Atlas. Keith Johnston. W. Magnificent, huge atlas showing the area of the 40th Parallel Survey in topographical and geological maps. Wheat notes: "These are pioneer survey maps, and as such are most interesting. Mapping the West in so broad a cross-section had never before been attempted, a portent of things to come." King, at the age of 25, was made Geologist-in-charge of the Survey in 1867. He was formally ordered "to examine and describe the geological structure, geographical condition and natural resources of a belt of country extending from the 120th meridian eastward to the 105th meridian, along the 40th parallel of latitude with sufficient expansion north and south to include the lines of 'Central' and 'Union Pacific' railroads..." (Wheat). The topographical sheets depict features by brush shading rather than hachuring. In original binding -rare. Bound in green half leather with a label on the front, "Geological and Topographical Atlas Accompanying the Report of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel. 1st edition. 5 large folding maps, 3 small maps. This, the first edition, was published during the war, and thus has the feeling of events unfolding with an uncertain outcome. The second edition was published in 1815 after the conclusion of the war, and has different text, and is more of a history. Henry Tanner engraved the five large maps that Melish drew, and J. Vallance engraved the three small maps. We believe this is the first book Melish published with the idea that it was an "Atlas." |

First edition. Has Carey and Hart borders. Ristow's second 1846 issue. The first issue by Mitchell alone, without Tanner's name on the title page. Tanner issued this atlas first in 1836 with engraved maps, then it was taken over by Carey and Hart in 1843 and converted by them to lithographic maps in 1845. In 1846 Mitchell took over the publishing of this atlas and continued until 1849, after which it was published until 1860 by Thomas, Cowperthwait and then Charles DeSilver. This atlas is important in American printing history in that it was the first American atlas to be converted from engraved map plates to lithographic map plates - greatly reducing the cost of production and thus making the book made widely affordable by the general public. The maps are in full color, atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Mitchell's Universal Atlas" stamped in gilt on front label. |
